¹After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias.

¹そののち、イエスはガリラヤの海、すなわち、テベリヤ湖の向こう岸へ渡られた。

²And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.

²すると、大ぜいの群衆がイエスについてきた。病人たちになさっていたしるしを見たからである。

³And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples.

³イエスは山に登って、弟子たちと一緒にそこで座につかれた。

⁴And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

⁴時に、ユダヤ人の祭である過越が間近になっていた。

⁵When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

⁵イエスは目をあげ、大ぜいの群衆が自分の方に集まって来るのを見て、ピリポに言われた、「どこからパンを買ってきて、この人々に食べさせようか」。

⁶And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

⁶これはピリポをためそうとして言われたのであって、ご自分ではしようとすることを、よくご承知であった。

⁷Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

⁷すると、ピリポはイエスに答えた、「二百デナリのパンがあっても、めいめいが少しずついただくにも足りますまい」。

⁸One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him,

⁸弟子のひとり、シモン・ペテロの兄弟アンデレがイエスに言った、

⁹There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?

⁹「ここに、大麦のパン五つと、さかな二ひきとを持っている子供がいます。しかし、こんなに大ぜいの人では、それが何になりましょう」。

¹⁰And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

¹⁰イエスは「人々をすわらせなさい」と言われた。その場所には草が多かった。そこにすわった男の数は五千人ほどであった。

¹¹And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

¹¹そこで、イエスはパンを取り、感謝してから、すわっている人々に分け与え、また、さかなをも同様にして、彼らの望むだけ分け与えられた。

¹²When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.

¹²人々がじゅうぶんに食べたのち、イエスは弟子たちに言われた、「少しでもむだにならないように、パンくずのあまりを集めなさい」。

¹³Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

¹³そこで彼らが集めると、五つの大麦のパンを食べて残ったパンくずは、十二のかごにいっぱいになった。

¹⁴Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.

¹⁴人々はイエスのなさったこのしるしを見て、「ほんとうに、この人こそ世にきたるべき預言者である」と言った。

¹⁵When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

¹⁵イエスは人々がきて、自分をとらえて王にしようとしていると知って、ただひとり、また山に退かれた。

¹⁶And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,

¹⁶夕方になったとき、弟子たちは海べに下り、

¹⁷And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

¹⁷舟に乗って海を渡り、向こう岸のカペナウムに行きかけた。すでに暗くなっていたのに、イエスはまだ彼らのところにおいでにならなかった。

¹⁸And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.

¹⁸その上、強い風が吹いてきて、海は荒れ出した。

¹⁹So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.

¹⁹四、五十丁こぎ出したとき、イエスが海の上を歩いて舟に近づいてこられるのを見て、彼らは恐れた。

²⁰But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.

²⁰すると、イエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしだ、恐れることはない」。

²¹Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

²¹そこで、彼らは喜んでイエスを舟に迎えようとした。すると舟は、すぐ、彼らが行こうとしていた地に着いた。

²²The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;

²²その翌日、海の向こう岸に立っていた群衆は、そこに小舟が一そうしかなく、またイエスは弟子たちと一緒に小舟にお乗りにならず、ただ弟子たちだけが船出したのを見た。

²³(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)

²³しかし、数そうの小舟がテベリヤからきて、主が感謝されたのちパンを人々に食べさせた場所に近づいた。

²⁴When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.

²⁴群衆は、イエスも弟子たちもそこにいないと知って、それらの小舟に乗り、イエスをたずねてカペナウムに行った。

²⁵And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

²⁵そして、海の向こう岸でイエスに出会ったので言った、「先生、いつ、ここにおいでになったのですか」。

²⁶Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

²⁶イエスは答えて言われた、「よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。あなたがたがわたしを尋ねてきているのは、しるしを見たためではなく、パンを食べて満腹したからである。

²⁷Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

²⁷朽ちる食物のためではなく、永遠の命に至る朽ちない食物のために働くがよい。これは人の子があなたがたに与えるものである。父なる神は、人の子にそれをゆだねられたのである」。

²⁸Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

²⁸そこで、彼らはイエスに言った、「神のわざを行うために、わたしたちは何をしたらよいでしょうか」。

²⁹Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

²⁹イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「神がつかわされた者を信じることが、神のわざである」。

³⁰They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

³⁰彼らはイエスに言った、「わたしたちが見てあなたを信じるために、どんなしるしを行って下さいますか。どんなことをして下さいますか。

³¹Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

³¹わたしたちの先祖は荒野でマナを食べました。それは『天よりのパンを彼らに与えて食べさせた』と書いてあるとおりです」。

³²Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

³²そこでイエスは彼らに言われた、「よくよく言っておく。天からのパンをあなたがたに与えたのは、モーセではない。天からのまことのパンをあなたがたに与えるのは、わたしの父なのである。

³³For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

³³神のパンは、天から下ってきて、この世に命を与えるものである」。

³⁴Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

³⁴彼らはイエスに言った、「主よ、そのパンをいつもわたしたちに下さい」。

³⁵And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

³⁵イエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしが命のパンである。わたしに来る者は決して飢えることがなく、わたしを信じる者は決してかわくことがない。

³⁶But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

³⁶しかし、あなたがたに言ったが、あなたがたはわたしを見たのに信じようとはしない。

³⁷All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

³⁷父がわたしに与えて下さる者は皆、わたしに来るであろう。そして、わたしに来る者を決して拒みはしない。

³⁸For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

³⁸わたしが天から下ってきたのは、自分のこころのままを行うためではなく、わたしをつかわされたかたのみこころを行うためである。

³⁹And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

³⁹わたしをつかわされたかたのみこころは、わたしに与えて下さった者を、わたしがひとりも失わずに、終りの日によみがえらせることである。

⁴⁰And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

⁴⁰わたしの父のみこころは、子を見て信じる者が、ことごとく永遠の命を得ることなのである。そして、わたしはその人々を終りの日によみがえらせるであろう」。

⁴¹The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

⁴¹ユダヤ人らは、イエスが「わたしは天から下ってきたパンである」と言われたので、イエスについてつぶやき始めた。

⁴²And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?

⁴²そして言った、「これはヨセフの子イエスではないか。わたしたちはその父母を知っているではないか。わたしは天から下ってきたと、どうして今いうのか」。

⁴³Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves.

⁴³イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「互につぶやいてはいけない。

⁴⁴No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

⁴⁴わたしをつかわされた父が引きよせて下さらなければ、だれもわたしに来ることはできない。わたしは、その人々を終りの日によみがえらせるであろう。

⁴⁵It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

⁴⁵預言者の書に、『彼らはみな神に教えられるであろう』と書いてある。父から聞いて学んだ者は、みなわたしに来るのである。

⁴⁶Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

⁴⁶神から出た者のほかに、だれかが父を見たのではない。その者だけが父を見たのである。

⁴⁷Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

⁴⁷よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。信じる者には永遠の命がある。

⁴⁸I am that bread of life.

⁴⁸わたしは命のパンである。

⁴⁹Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.

⁴⁹あなたがたの先祖は荒野でマナを食べたが、死んでしまった。

⁵⁰This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

⁵⁰しかし、天から下ってきたパンを食べる人は、決して死ぬことはない。

⁵¹I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

⁵¹わたしは天から下ってきた生きたパンである。それを食べる者は、いつまでも生きるであろう。わたしが与えるパンは、世の命のために与えるわたしの肉である」。

⁵²The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

⁵²そこで、ユダヤ人らが互に論じて言った、「この人はどうして、自分の肉をわたしたちに与えて食べさせることができようか」。

⁵³Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

⁵³イエスは彼らに言われた、「よくよく言っておく。人の子の肉を食べず、また、その血を飲まなければ、あなたがたの内に命はない。

⁵⁴Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

⁵⁴わたしの肉を食べ、わたしの血を飲む者には、永遠の命があり、わたしはその人を終りの日によみがえらせるであろう。

⁵⁵For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

⁵⁵わたしの肉はまことの食物、わたしの血はまことの飲み物である。

⁵⁶He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

⁵⁶わたしの肉を食べ、わたしの血を飲む者はわたしにおり、わたしもまたその人におる。

⁵⁷As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

⁵⁷生ける父がわたしをつかわされ、また、わたしが父によって生きているように、わたしを食べる者もわたしによって生きるであろう。

⁵⁸This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

⁵⁸天から下ってきたパンは、先祖たちが食べたが死んでしまったようなものではない。このパンを食べる者は、いつまでも生きるであろう」。

⁵⁹These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

⁵⁹これらのことは、イエスがカペナウムの会堂で教えておられたときに言われたものである。

⁶⁰Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

⁶⁰弟子たちのうちの多くの者は、これを聞いて言った、「これは、ひどい言葉だ。だれがそんなことを聞いておられようか」。

⁶¹When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?

⁶¹しかしイエスは、弟子たちがそのことでつぶやいているのを見破って、彼らに言われた、「このことがあなたがたのつまずきになるのか。

⁶²What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?

⁶²それでは、もし人の子が前にいた所に上るのを見たら、どうなるのか。

⁶³It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

⁶³人を生かすものは霊であって、肉はなんの役にも立たない。わたしがあなたがたに話した言葉は霊であり、また命である。

⁶⁴But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

⁶⁴しかし、あなたがたの中には信じない者がいる」。イエスは、初めから、だれが信じないか、また、だれが彼を裏切るかを知っておられたのである。

⁶⁵And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

⁶⁵そしてイエスは言われた、「それだから、父が与えて下さった者でなければ、わたしに来ることはできないと、言ったのである」。

⁶⁶From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

⁶⁶それ以来、多くの弟子たちは去っていって、もはやイエスと行動を共にしなかった。

⁶⁷Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?

⁶⁷そこでイエスは十二弟子に言われた、「あなたがたも去ろうとするのか」。

⁶⁸Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

⁶⁸シモン・ペテロが答えた、「主よ、わたしたちは、だれのところに行きましょう。永遠の命の言をもっているのはあなたです。

⁶⁹And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

⁶⁹わたしたちは、あなたが神の聖者であることを信じ、また知っています」。

⁷⁰Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?

⁷⁰イエスは彼らに答えられた、「あなたがた十二人を選んだのは、わたしではなかったか。それだのに、あなたがたのうちのひとりは悪魔である」。これは、イスカリオテのシモンの子ユダをさして言われたのである。このユダは、十二弟子のひとりでありながら、イエスを裏切ろうとしていた。

⁷¹He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.
