¹After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

¹こののち、ユダヤ人の祭があったので、イエスはエルサレムに上られた。

²Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.

²エルサレムにある羊の門のそばに、ヘブル語でベテスダと呼ばれる池があった。そこには五つの廊があった。

³In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

³その廊の中には、病人、盲人、足なえ、やせ衰えた者などが、大ぜいからだを横たえていた。〔彼らは水の動くのを待っていたのである。

⁴For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

⁴それは、時々、主の御使がこの池に降りてきて水を動かすことがあるが、水が動いた時まっ先にはいる者は、どんな病気にかかっていても、いやされたからである。〕

⁵And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

⁵さて、そこに三十八年のあいだ、病気に悩んでいる人があった。

⁶When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?

⁶イエスはその人が横になっているのを見、また長い間わずらっていたのを知って、その人に「なおりたいのか」と言われた。

⁷The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

⁷この病人はイエスに答えた、「主よ、水が動く時に、わたしを池の中に入れてくれる人がいません。わたしがはいりかけると、ほかの人が先に降りて行くのです」。

⁸Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

⁸イエスは彼に言われた、「起きて、あなたの床を取りあげ、そして歩きなさい」。

⁹And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

⁹すると、この人はすぐにいやされ、床をとりあげて歩いて行った。その日は安息日であった。

¹⁰The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.

¹⁰そこでユダヤ人たちは、そのいやされた人に言った、「きょうは安息日だ。床を取りあげるのは、よろしくない」。

¹¹He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

¹¹彼は答えた、「わたしをなおして下さったかたが、床を取りあげて歩けと、わたしに言われました」。

¹²Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

¹²彼らは尋ねた、「取りあげて歩けと言った人は、だれか」。

¹³And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

¹³しかし、このいやされた人は、それがだれであるか知らなかった。群衆がその場にいたので、イエスはそっと出て行かれたからである。

¹⁴Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

¹⁴そののち、イエスは宮でその人に出会ったので、彼に言われた、「ごらん、あなたはよくなった。もう罪を犯してはいけない。何かもっと悪いことが、あなたの身に起るかも知れないから」。

¹⁵The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

¹⁵彼は出て行って、自分をいやしたのはイエスであったと、ユダヤ人たちに告げた。

¹⁶And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

¹⁶そのためユダヤ人たちは、安息日にこのようなことをしたと言って、イエスを責めた。

¹⁷But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

¹⁷そこで、イエスは彼らに答えられた、「わたしの父は今に至るまで働いておられる。わたしも働くのである」。

¹⁸Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

¹⁸このためにユダヤ人たちは、ますますイエスを殺そうと計るようになった。それは、イエスが安息日を破られたばかりではなく、神を自分の父と呼んで、自分を神と等しいものとされたからである。

¹⁹Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

¹⁹さて、イエスは彼らに答えて言われた、「よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。子は父のなさることを見てする以外に、自分からは何事もすることができない。父のなさることであればすべて、子もそのとおりにするのである。

²⁰For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

²⁰なぜなら、父は子を愛して、みずからなさることは、すべて子にお示しになるからである。そして、それよりもなお大きなわざを、お示しになるであろう。あなたがたが、それによって不思議に思うためである。

²¹For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

²¹すなわち、父が死人を起して命をお与えになるように、子もまた、そのこころにかなう人々に命を与えるであろう。

²²For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

²²父はだれをもさばかない。さばきのことはすべて、子にゆだねられたからである。

²³That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

²³それは、すべての人が父を敬うと同様に、子を敬うためである。子を敬わない者は、子をつかわされた父をも敬わない。

²⁴Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

²⁴よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。わたしの言葉を聞いて、わたしをつかわされたかたを信じる者は、永遠の命を受け、またさばかれることがなく、死から命に移っているのである。

²⁵Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

²⁵よくよくあなたがたに言っておく。死んだ人たちが、神の子の声を聞く時が来る。今すでにきている。そして聞く人は生きるであろう。

²⁶For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

²⁶それは、父がご自分のうちに生命をお持ちになっていると同様に、子にもまた、自分のうちに生命を持つことをお許しになったからである。

²⁷And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

²⁷そして子は人の子であるから、子にさばきを行う権威をお与えになった。

²⁸Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

²⁸このことを驚くには及ばない。墓の中にいる者たちがみな神の子の声を聞き、

²⁹And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

²⁹善をおこなった人々は、生命を受けるためによみがえり、悪をおこなった人々は、さばきを受けるためによみがえって、それぞれ出てくる時が来るであろう。

³⁰I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

³⁰わたしは、自分からは何事もすることができない。ただ聞くままにさばくのである。そして、わたしのこのさばきは正しい。それは、わたし自身の考えでするのではなく、わたしをつかわされたかたの、み旨を求めているからである。

³¹If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

³¹もし、わたしが自分自身についてあかしをするならば、わたしのあかしはほんとうではない。

³²There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

³²わたしについてあかしをするかたはほかにあり、そして、その人がするあかしがほんとうであることを、わたしは知っている。

³³Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

³³あなたがたはヨハネのもとへ人をつかわしたが、そのとき彼は真理についてあかしをした。

³⁴But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

³⁴わたしは人からあかしを受けないが、このことを言うのは、あなたがたが救われるためである。

³⁵He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

³⁵ヨハネは燃えて輝くあかりであった。あなたがたは、しばらくの間その光を喜び楽しもうとした。

³⁶But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

³⁶しかし、わたしには、ヨハネのあかしよりも、もっと力あるあかしがある。父がわたしに成就させようとしてお与えになったわざ、すなわち、今わたしがしているこのわざが、父のわたしをつかわされたことをあかししている。

³⁷And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

³⁷また、わたしをつかわされた父も、ご自分でわたしについてあかしをされた。あなたがたは、まだそのみ声を聞いたこともなく、そのみ姿を見たこともない。

³⁸And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

³⁸また、神がつかわされた者を信じないから、神の御言はあなたがたのうちにとどまっていない。

³⁹Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

³⁹あなたがたは、聖書の中に永遠の命があると思って調べているが、この聖書は、わたしについてあかしをするものである。

⁴⁰And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

⁴⁰しかも、あなたがたは、命を得るためにわたしのもとにこようともしない。

⁴¹I receive not honour from men.

⁴¹わたしは人からの誉を受けることはしない。

⁴²But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

⁴²しかし、あなたがたのうちには神を愛する愛がないことを知っている。

⁴³I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

⁴³わたしは父の名によってきたのに、あなたがたはわたしを受けいれない。もし、ほかの人が彼自身の名によって来るならば、その人を受けいれるのであろう。

⁴⁴How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

⁴⁴互に誉を受けながら、ただひとりの神からの誉を求めようとしないあなたがたは、どうして信じることができようか。

⁴⁵Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

⁴⁵わたしがあなたがたのことを父に訴えると、考えてはいけない。あなたがたを訴える者は、あなたがたが頼みとしているモーセその人である。

⁴⁶For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me.

⁴⁶もし、あなたがたがモーセを信じたならば、わたしをも信じたであろう。モーセは、わたしについて書いたのである。しかし、モーセの書いたものを信じないならば、どうしてわたしの言葉を信じるだろうか」。

⁴⁷But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

⁴⁷しかし、モーセの書いたものを信じないならば、どうしてわたしの言葉を信じるだろうか」。
