¹When therefore the LORD knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

¹イエスが、ヨハネよりも多く弟子をつくり、またバプテスマを授けておられるということを、パリサイ人たちが聞き、それを主が知られたとき、

²(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

²（しかし、イエスみずからが、バプテスマをお授けになったのではなく、その弟子たちであった）

³He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

³ユダヤを去って、またガリラヤへ行かれた。

⁴And he must needs go through Samaria.

⁴しかし、イエスはサマリヤを通過しなければならなかった。

⁵Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

⁵そこで、イエスはサマリヤのスカルという町においでになった。この町は、ヤコブがその子ヨセフに与えた土地の近くにあったが、

⁶Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

⁶そこにヤコブの井戸があった。イエスは旅の疲れを覚えて、そのまま、この井戸のそばにすわっておられた。時は昼の十二時ごろであった。

⁷There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

⁷ひとりのサマリヤの女が水をくみにきたので、イエスはこの女に、「水を飲ませて下さい」と言われた。

⁸(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

⁸弟子たちは食物を買いに町に行っていたのである。

⁹Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

⁹すると、サマリヤの女はイエスに言った、「あなたはユダヤ人でありながら、どうしてサマリヤの女のわたしに、飲ませてくれとおっしゃるのですか」。これは、ユダヤ人はサマリヤ人と交際していなかったからである。

¹⁰Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

¹⁰イエスは答えて言われた、「もしあなたが神の賜物のことを知り、また、『水を飲ませてくれ』と言った者が、だれであるか知っていたならば、あなたの方から願い出て、その人から生ける水をもらったことであろう」。

¹¹The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

¹¹女はイエスに言った、「主よ、あなたは、くむ物をお持ちにならず、その上、井戸は深いのです。その生ける水を、どこから手に入れるのですか。

¹²Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

¹²あなたは、この井戸を下さったわたしたちの父ヤコブよりも、偉いかたなのですか。ヤコブ自身も飲み、その子らも、その家畜も、この井戸から飲んだのですが」。

¹³Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

¹³イエスは女に答えて言われた、「この水を飲む者はだれでも、またかわくであろう。

¹⁴But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

¹⁴しかし、わたしが与える水を飲む者は、いつまでも、かわくことがないばかりか、わたしが与える水は、その人のうちで泉となり、永遠の命に至る水が、わきあがるであろう」。

¹⁵The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

¹⁵女はイエスに言った、「主よ、わたしがかわくことがなく、また、ここにくみにこなくてもよいように、その水をわたしに下さい」。

¹⁶Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

¹⁶イエスは女に言われた、「あなたの夫を呼びに行って、ここに連れてきなさい」。

¹⁷The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

¹⁷女は答えて言った、「わたしには夫はありません」。イエスは女に言われた、「夫がないと言ったのは、もっともだ。

¹⁸For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

¹⁸あなたには五人の夫があったが、今のはあなたの夫ではない。あなたの言葉のとおりである」。

¹⁹The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

¹⁹女はイエスに言った、「主よ、わたしはあなたを預言者と見ます。

²⁰Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

²⁰わたしたちの先祖は、この山で礼拝をしたのですが、あなたがたは礼拝すべき場所は、エルサレムにあると言っています」。

²¹Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

²¹イエスは女に言われた、「女よ、わたしの言うことを信じなさい。あなたがたが、この山でも、またエルサレムでもない所で、父を礼拝する時が来る。

²²Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

²²あなたがたは自分の知らないものを拝んでいるが、わたしたちは知っているかたを礼拝している。救はユダヤ人から来るからである。

²³But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

²³しかし、まことの礼拝をする者たちが、霊とまこととをもって父を礼拝する時が来る。そうだ、今きている。父は、このような礼拝をする者たちを求めておられるからである。

²⁴God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

²⁴神は霊であるから、礼拝をする者も、霊とまこととをもって礼拝すべきである」。

²⁵The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

²⁵女はイエスに言った、「わたしは、キリストと呼ばれるメシヤがこられることを知っています。そのかたがこられたならば、わたしたちに、いっさいのことを知らせて下さるでしょう」。

²⁶Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

²⁶イエスは女に言われた、「あなたと話をしているこのわたしが、それである」。

²⁷And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

²⁷そのとき、弟子たちが帰って来て、イエスがひとりの女と話しておられるのを見て不思議に思ったが、しかし、「何を求めておられますか」とも、「何を彼女と話しておられるのですか」とも、尋ねる者はひとりもなかった。

²⁸The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

²⁸この女は水がめをそのままそこに置いて町に行き、人々に言った、

²⁹Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

²⁹「わたしのしたことを何もかも、言いあてた人がいます。さあ、見にきてごらんなさい。もしかしたら、この人がキリストかも知れません」。

³⁰Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

³⁰人々は町を出て、ぞくぞくとイエスのところへ行った。

³¹In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.

³¹その間に弟子たちはイエスに、「先生、召しあがってください」とすすめた。

³²But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

³²ところが、イエスは言われた、「わたしには、あなたがたの知らない食物がある」。

³³Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?

³³そこで、弟子たちが互に言った、「だれかが、何か食べるものを持ってきてさしあげたのであろうか」。

³⁴Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

³⁴イエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしの食物というのは、わたしをつかわされたかたのみこころを行い、そのみわざをなし遂げることである。

³⁵Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

³⁵あなたがたは、刈入れ時が来るまでには、まだ四か月あると、言っているではないか。しかし、わたしはあなたがたに言う。目をあげて畑を見なさい。はや色づいて刈入れを待っている。

³⁶And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

³⁶刈る者は報酬を受けて、永遠の命に至る実を集めている。まく者も刈る者も、共々に喜ぶためである。

³⁷And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.

³⁷そこで、『ひとりがまき、ひとりが刈る』ということわざが、ほんとうのこととなる。

³⁸I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

³⁸わたしは、あなたがたをつかわして、あなたがたがそのために労苦しなかったものを刈りとらせた。ほかの人々が労苦し、あなたがたは、彼らの労苦の実にあずかっているのである」。

³⁹And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

³⁹さて、この町からきた多くのサマリヤ人は、「この人は、わたしのしたことを何もかも言いあてた」とあかしした女の言葉によって、イエスを信じた。

⁴⁰So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.

⁴⁰そこで、サマリヤ人たちはイエスのもとにきて、自分たちのところに滞在していただきたいと願ったので、イエスはそこにふつか滞在された。

⁴¹And many more believed because of his own word;

⁴¹そしてなお多くの人々が、イエスの言葉を聞いて信じた。

⁴²And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

⁴²彼らは女に言った、「わたしたちが信じるのは、もうあなたが話してくれたからではない。自分自身で親しく聞いて、この人こそまことに世の救主であることが、わかったからである」。

⁴³Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.

⁴³ふつかの後に、イエスはここを去ってガリラヤへ行かれた。

⁴⁴For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.

⁴⁴イエスはみずからはっきり、「預言者は自分の故郷では敬われないものだ」と言われたのである。

⁴⁵Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.

⁴⁵ガリラヤに着かれると、ガリラヤの人たちはイエスを歓迎した。それは、彼らも祭に行っていたので、その祭の時、イエスがエルサレムでなされたことをことごとく見ていたからである。

⁴⁶So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.

⁴⁶イエスは、またガリラヤのカナに行かれた。そこは、かつて水をぶどう酒にかえられた所である。ところが、病気をしているむすこを持つある役人がカペナウムにいた。

⁴⁷When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.

⁴⁷この人が、ユダヤからガリラヤにイエスのきておられることを聞き、みもとにきて、カペナウムに下って、彼の子をなおしていただきたいと、願った。その子が死にかかっていたからである。

⁴⁸Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

⁴⁸そこで、イエスは彼に言われた、「あなたがたは、しるしと奇跡とを見ない限り、決して信じないだろう」。

⁴⁹The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.

⁴⁹この役人はイエスに言った、「主よ、どうぞ、子供が死なないうちにきて下さい」。

⁵⁰Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.

⁵⁰イエスは彼に言われた、「お帰りなさい。あなたのむすこは助かるのだ」。彼は自分に言われたイエスの言葉を信じて帰って行った。

⁵¹And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.

⁵¹その下って行く途中、僕たちが彼に出会い、その子が助かったことを告げた。

⁵²Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.

⁵²そこで、彼は僕たちに、そのなおりはじめた時刻を尋ねてみたら、「きのうの午後一時に熱が引きました」と答えた。

⁵³So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.

⁵³それは、イエスが「あなたのむすこは助かるのだ」と言われたのと同じ時刻であったことを、この父は知って、彼自身もその家族一同も信じた。これは、イエスがユダヤからガリラヤにきてなされた第二のしるしである。

⁵⁴This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.
