1There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
1パリサイ人のひとりで、その名をニコデモというユダヤ人の指導者があった。
2The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
2この人が夜イエスのもとにきて言った、「先生、わたしたちはあなたが神からこられた教師であることを知っています。神がご一緒でないなら、あなたがなさっておられるようなしるしは、だれにもできはしません」。
3Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
3イエスは答えて言われた、「よくよくあなたに言っておく。だれでも新しく生れなければ、神の国を見ることはできない」。
4Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
4ニコデモは言った、「人は年をとってから生れることが、どうしてできますか。もう一度、母の胎にはいって生れることができましょうか」。
5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
5イエスは答えられた、「よくよくあなたに言っておく。だれでも、水と霊とから生れなければ、神の国にはいることはできない。
6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
6肉から生れる者は肉であり、霊から生れる者は霊である。
7Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
7あなたがたは新しく生れなければならないと、わたしが言ったからとて、不思議に思うには及ばない。
8The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
8風は思いのままに吹く。あなたはその音を聞くが、それがどこからきて、どこへ行くかは知らない。霊から生れる者もみな、それと同じである」。
9Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
9ニコデモはイエスに答えて言った、「どうして、そんなことがあり得ましょうか」。
10Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
10イエスは彼に答えて言われた、「あなたはイスラエルの教師でありながら、これぐらいのことがわからないのか。
11Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
11よくよく言っておく。わたしたちは自分の知っていることを語り、また自分の見たことをあかししているのに、あなたがたはわたしたちのあかしを受けいれない。
12If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
12わたしが地上のことを語っているのに、あなたがたが信じないならば、天上のことを語った場合、どうしてそれを信じるだろうか。
13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
13天から下ってきた者、すなわち人の子のほかには、だれも天に上った者はない。
14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
14そして、ちょうどモーセが荒野でへびを上げたように、人の子もまた上げられなければならない。
15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
15それは彼を信じる者が、すべて永遠の命を得るためである」。
16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
16神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。
17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
17神が御子を世につかわされたのは、世をさばくためではなく、御子によって、この世が救われるためである。
18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
18彼を信じる者は、さばかれない。信じない者は、すでにさばかれている。神のひとり子の名を信じることをしないからである。
19And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
19そのさばきというのは、光がこの世にきたのに、人々はそのおこないが悪いために、光よりもやみの方を愛したことである。
20For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
20悪を行っている者はみな光を憎む。そして、そのおこないが明るみに出されるのを恐れて、光にこようとはしない。
21But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
21しかし、真理を行っている者は光に来る。その人のおこないの、神にあってなされたということが、明らかにされるためである。
22After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
22こののち、イエスは弟子たちとユダヤの地に行き、彼らと一緒にそこに滞在して、バプテスマを授けておられた。
23And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
23ヨハネもサリムに近いアイノンで、バプテスマを授けていた。そこには水がたくさんあったからである。人々がぞくぞくとやってきてバプテスマを受けていた。
24For John was not yet cast into prison.
24そのとき、ヨハネはまだ獄に入れられてはいなかった。
25Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.
25ところが、ヨハネの弟子たちとひとりのユダヤ人との間に、きよめのことで争論が起った。
26And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
26そこで彼らはヨハネのところにきて言った、「先生、ごらん下さい。ヨルダンの向こうであなたと一緒にいたことがあり、そして、あなたがあかしをしておられたあのかたが、バプテスマを授けており、皆の者が、そのかたのところへ出かけています」。
27John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
27ヨハネは答えて言った、「人は天から与えられなければ、何ものも受けることはできない。
28Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
28『わたしはキリストではなく、そのかたよりも先につかわされた者である』と言ったことをあかししてくれるのは、あなたがた自身である。
29He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
29花嫁をもつ者は花婿である。花婿の友人は立って彼の声を聞き、その声を聞いて大いに喜ぶ。こうして、この喜びはわたしに満ち足りている。
30He must increase, but I must decrease.
30彼は必ず栄え、わたしは衰える。
31He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
31上から来る者は、すべてのものの上にある。地から出る者は、地に属する者であって、地のことを語る。天から来る者は、すべてのものの上にある。
32And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
32彼はその見たところ、聞いたところをあかししているが、だれもそのあかしを受けいれない。
33He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
33しかし、そのあかしを受けいれる者は、神がまことであることを、たしかに認めたのである。
34For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
34神がおつかわしになったかたは、神の言葉を語る。神は聖霊を限りなく賜うからである。
35The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
35父は御子を愛して、万物をその手にお与えになった。御子を信じる者は永遠の命をもつ。御子に従わない者は、命にあずかることがないばかりか、神の怒りがその上にとどまるのである」。
36He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
36御子を信じる者は永遠の命をもつ。御子に従わない者は、命にあずかることがないばかりか、神の怒りがその上にとどまるのである」。
