¹Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

²Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

²御言に仕えた人々が伝えたとおり物語に書き連ねようと、多くの人が手を着けましたが、

³It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

³テオピロ閣下よ、わたしもすべての事を初めから詳しく調べていますので、ここに、それを順序正しく書きつづって、閣下に献じることにしました。

⁴That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

⁴すでにお聞きになっている事が確実であることを、これによって十分に知っていただきたいためであります。

⁵THERE was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

⁵ユダヤの王ヘロデの世に、アビヤの組の祭司で名をザカリヤという者がいた。その妻はアロン家の娘のひとりで、名をエリサベツといった。

⁶And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

⁶ふたりとも神のみまえに正しい人であって、主の戒めと定めとを、みな落度なく行っていた。

⁷And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

⁷ところが、エリサベツは不妊の女であったため、彼らには子がなく、そしてふたりともすでに年老いていた。

⁸And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

⁸さてザカリヤは、その組が当番になり神のみまえに祭司の務をしていたとき、

⁹According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

⁹祭司職の慣例に従ってくじを引いたところ、主の聖所にはいって香をたくことになった。

¹⁰And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

¹⁰香をたいている間、多くの民衆はみな外で祈っていた。

¹¹And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

¹¹すると主の御使が現れて、香壇の右に立った。

¹²And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

¹²ザカリヤはこれを見て、おじ惑い、恐怖の念に襲われた。

¹³But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

¹³そこで御使が彼に言った、「恐れるな、ザカリヤよ、あなたの祈が聞きいれられたのだ。あなたの妻エリサベツは男の子を産むであろう。その子をヨハネと名づけなさい。

¹⁴And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

¹⁴彼はあなたに喜びと楽しみとをもたらし、多くの人々もその誕生を喜ぶであろう。

¹⁵For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

¹⁵彼は主のみまえに大いなる者となり、ぶどう酒や強い酒をいっさい飲まず、母の胎内にいる時からすでに聖霊に満たされており、

¹⁶And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

¹⁶そして、イスラエルの多くの子らを、主なる彼らの神に立ち帰らせるであろう。

¹⁷And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

¹⁷彼はエリヤの霊と力とをもって、みまえに先立って行き、父の心を子に向けさせ、逆らう者に義人の思いを持たせて、整えられた民を主に備えるであろう」。

¹⁸And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

¹⁸するとザカリヤは御使に言った、「どうしてそんな事が、わたしにわかるでしょうか。わたしは老人ですし、妻も年をとっています」。

¹⁹And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

¹⁹御使が答えて言った、「わたしは神のみまえに立つガブリエルであって、この喜ばしい知らせをあなたに語り伝えるために、つかわされたものである。

²⁰And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

²⁰時が来れば成就するわたしの言葉を信じなかったから、あなたはおしになり、この事の起る日まで、ものが言えなくなる」。

²¹And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

²¹民衆はザカリヤを待っていたので、彼が聖所内で暇どっているのを不思議に思っていた。

²²And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

²²ついに彼は出てきたが、物が言えなかったので、人々は彼が聖所内でまぼろしを見たのだと悟った。彼は彼らに合図をするだけで、引きつづき、おしのままでいた。

²³And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

²³それから務の期日が終ったので、家に帰った。

²⁴And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

²⁴そののち、妻エリサベツはみごもり、五か月のあいだ引きこもっていたが、

²⁵Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

²⁵「主は、今わたしを心にかけてくださって、人々の間からわたしの恥を取り除くために、こうしてくださいました」と言った。

²⁶And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

²⁶六か月目に、御使ガブリエルが、神からつかわされて、ナザレというガリラヤの町の一処女のもとにきた。

²⁷To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

²⁷この処女はダビデ家の出であるヨセフという人のいいなづけになっていて、名をマリヤといった。

²⁸And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

²⁸御使がマリヤのところにきて言った、「恵まれた女よ、おめでとう、主があなたと共におられます」。

²⁹And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

²⁹この言葉にマリヤはひどく胸騒ぎがして、このあいさつはなんの事であろうかと、思いめぐらしていた。

³⁰And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

³⁰すると御使が言った、「恐れるな、マリヤよ、あなたは神から恵みをいただいているのです。

³¹And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

³¹見よ、あなたはみごもって男の子を産むでしょう。その子をイエスと名づけなさい。

³²He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

³²彼は大いなる者となり、いと高き者の子と、となえられるでしょう。そして、主なる神は彼に父ダビデの王座をお与えになり、

³³And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

³³彼はとこしえにヤコブの家を支配し、その支配は限りなく続くでしょう」。

³⁴Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

³⁴そこでマリヤは御使に言った、「どうして、そんな事があり得ましょうか。わたしにはまだ夫がありませんのに」。

³⁵And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

³⁵御使が答えて言った、「聖霊があなたに臨み、いと高き者の力があなたをおおうでしょう。それゆえに、生れ出る子は聖なるものであり、神の子と、となえられるでしょう。

³⁶And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

³⁶あなたの親族エリサベツも老年ながら子を宿しています。不妊の女といわれていたのに、はや六か月になっています。

³⁷For with God nothing shall be impossible.

³⁷神には、なんでもできないことはありません」。

³⁸And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

³⁸そこでマリヤが言った、「わたしは主のはしためです。お言葉どおりこの身に成りますように」。そして御使は彼女から離れて行った。

³⁹And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

³⁹そのころ、マリヤは立って、大急ぎで山里へむかいユダの町に行き、

⁴⁰And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

⁴⁰ザカリヤの家にはいってエリサベツにあいさつした。

⁴¹And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

⁴¹エリサベツがマリヤのあいさつを聞いたとき、その子が胎内でおどった。エリサベツは聖霊に満たされ、

⁴²And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

⁴²声高く叫んで言った、「あなたは女の中で祝福されたかた、あなたの胎の実も祝福されています。

⁴³And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

⁴³主の母上がわたしのところにきてくださるとは、なんという光栄でしょう。

⁴⁴For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

⁴⁴ごらんなさい。あなたのあいさつの声がわたしの耳にはいったとき、子供が胎内で喜びおどりました。

⁴⁵And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

⁴⁵主のお語りになったことが必ず成就すると信じた女は、なんとさいわいなことでしょう」。

⁴⁶And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

⁴⁶するとマリヤは言った、「わたしの魂は主をあがめ、

⁴⁷And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

⁴⁷わたしの霊は救主なる神をたたえます。

⁴⁸For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

⁴⁸この卑しい女をさえ、心にかけてくださいました。今からのち代々の人々は、わたしをさいわいな女と言うでしょう、

⁴⁹For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

⁴⁹力あるかたが、わたしに大きな事をしてくださったからです。そのみ名はきよく、

⁵⁰And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

⁵⁰そのあわれみは、代々限りなく主をかしこみ恐れる者に及びます。

⁵¹He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

⁵¹主はみ腕をもって力をふるい、心の思いのおごり高ぶる者を追い散らし、

⁵²He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

⁵²権力ある者を王座から引きおろし、卑しい者を引き上げ、

⁵³He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

⁵³飢えている者を良いもので飽かせ、富んでいる者を空腹のまま帰らせなさいます。

⁵⁴He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

⁵⁴主は、あわれみをお忘れにならず、その僕イスラエルを助けてくださいました、

⁵⁵As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

⁵⁵わたしたちの父祖アブラハムとその子孫とをとこしえにあわれむと約束なさったとおりに」。

⁵⁶And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

⁵⁶マリヤは、エリサベツのところに三か月ほど滞在してから、家に帰った。

⁵⁷Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

⁵⁷さてエリサベツは月が満ちて、男の子を産んだ。

⁵⁸And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

⁵⁸近所の人々や親族は、主が大きなあわれみを彼女におかけになったことを聞いて、共どもに喜んだ。

⁵⁹And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

⁵⁹八日目になったので、幼な子に割礼をするために人々がきて、父の名にちなんでザカリヤという名にしようとした。

⁶⁰And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

⁶⁰ところが、母親は、「いいえ、ヨハネという名にしなくてはいけません」と言った。

⁶¹And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

⁶¹人々は、「あなたの親族の中には、そういう名のついた者は、ひとりもいません」と彼女に言った。

⁶²And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

⁶²そして父親に、どんな名にしたいのですかと、合図で尋ねた。

⁶³And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

⁶³ザカリヤは書板を持ってこさせて、それに「その名はヨハネ」と書いたので、みんなの者は不思議に思った。

⁶⁴And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

⁶⁴すると、立ちどころにザカリヤの口が開けて舌がゆるみ、語り出して神をほめたたえた。

⁶⁵And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

⁶⁵近所の人々はみな恐れをいだき、またユダヤの山里の至るところに、これらの事がことごとく語り伝えられたので、

⁶⁶And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

⁶⁶聞く者たちは皆それを心に留めて、「この子は、いったい、どんな者になるだろう」と語り合った。主のみ手が彼と共にあった。

⁶⁷And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

⁶⁷父ザカリヤは聖霊に満たされ、預言して言った、

⁶⁸Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

⁶⁸「主なるイスラエルの神は、ほむべきかな。神はその民を顧みてこれをあがない、

⁶⁹And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

⁶⁹わたしたちのために救の角を僕ダビデの家にお立てになった。

⁷⁰As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

⁷⁰古くから、聖なる預言者たちの口によってお語りになったように、

⁷¹That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

⁷¹わたしたちを敵から、またすべてわたしたちを憎む者の手から、救い出すためである。

⁷²To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

⁷²こうして、神はわたしたちの父祖たちにあわれみをかけ、その聖なる契約、

⁷³The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

⁷³すなわち、父祖アブラハムにお立てになった誓いをおぼえて、

⁷⁴That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

⁷⁴わたしたちを敵の手から救い出し、

⁷⁵In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

⁷⁵生きている限り、きよく正しく、みまえに恐れなく仕えさせてくださるのである。

⁷⁶And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

⁷⁶幼な子よ、あなたは、いと高き者の預言者と呼ばれるであろう。主のみまえに先立って行き、その道を備え、

⁷⁷To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

⁷⁷罪のゆるしによる救をその民に知らせるのであるから。

⁷⁸Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

⁷⁸これはわたしたちの神のあわれみ深いみこころによる。また、そのあわれみによって、日の光が上からわたしたちに臨み、

⁷⁹To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

⁷⁹暗黒と死の陰とに住む者を照し、わたしたちの足を平和の道へ導くであろう」。幼な子は成長し、その霊も強くなり、そしてイスラエルに現れる日まで、荒野にいた。

⁸⁰And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
