¹And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

²(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

³And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

³人々はみな登録をするために、それぞれ自分の町へ帰って行った。

⁴And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

⁴ヨセフもダビデの家系であり、またその血統であったので、ガリラヤの町ナザレを出て、ユダヤのベツレヘムというダビデの町へ上って行った。

⁵To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

⁵それは、すでに身重になっていたいいなづけの妻マリヤと共に、登録をするためであった。

⁶And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

⁶ところが、彼らがベツレヘムに滞在している間に、マリヤは月が満ちて、

⁷And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

⁷初子を産み、布にくるんで、飼葉おけの中に寝かせた。客間には彼らのいる余地がなかったからである。

⁸And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

⁸さて、この地方で羊飼たちが夜、野宿しながら羊の群れの番をしていた。

⁹And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

⁹すると主の御使が現れ、主の栄光が彼らをめぐり照したので、彼らは非常に恐れた。

¹⁰And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

¹⁰御使は言った、「恐れるな。見よ、すべての民に与えられる大きな喜びを、あなたがたに伝える。

¹¹For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

¹¹きょうダビデの町に、あなたがたのために救主がお生れになった。このかたこそ主なるキリストである。

¹²And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

¹²あなたがたは、幼な子が布にくるまって飼葉おけの中に寝かしてあるのを見るであろう。それが、あなたがたに与えられるしるしである」。

¹³And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

¹³するとたちまち、おびただしい天の軍勢が現れ、御使と一緒になって神をさんびして言った、

¹⁴Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

¹⁴「いと高きところでは、神に栄光があるように、地の上では、み心にかなう人々に平和があるように」。

¹⁵And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

¹⁵御使たちが彼らを離れて天に帰ったとき、羊飼たちは「さあ、ベツレヘムへ行って、主がお知らせ下さったその出来事を見てこようではないか」と、互に語り合った。

¹⁶And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

¹⁶そして急いで行って、マリヤとヨセフ、また飼葉おけに寝かしてある幼な子を捜しあてた。

¹⁷And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

¹⁷彼らに会った上で、この子について自分たちに告げ知らされた事を、人々に伝えた。

¹⁸And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

¹⁸人々はみな、羊飼たちが話してくれたことを聞いて、不思議に思った。

¹⁹But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

¹⁹しかし、マリヤはこれらの事をことごとく心に留めて、思いめぐらしていた。

²⁰And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

²⁰羊飼たちは、見聞きしたことが何もかも自分たちに語られたとおりであったので、神をあがめ、またさんびしながら帰って行った。

²¹And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

²¹八日が過ぎ、割礼をほどこす時となったので、受胎のまえに御使が告げたとおり、幼な子をイエスと名づけた。

²²And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;

²²それから、モーセの律法による彼らのきよめの期間が過ぎたとき、両親は幼な子を連れてエルサレムへ上った。

²³(As it is written in the law of the LORD, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)

²³それは主の律法に「母の胎を初めて開く男の子はみな、主に聖別された者と、となえられねばならない」と書いてあるとおり、幼な子を主にささげるためであり、

²⁴And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

²⁴また同じ主の律法に、「山ばと一つがい、または、家ばとのひな二羽」と定めてあるのに従って、犠牲をささげるためであった。

²⁵And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

²⁵その時、エルサレムにシメオンという名の人がいた。この人は正しい信仰深い人で、イスラエルの慰められるのを待ち望んでいた。また聖霊が彼に宿っていた。

²⁶And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

²⁶そして主のつかわす救主に会うまでは死ぬことはないと、聖霊の示しを受けていた。

²⁷And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

²⁷この人が御霊に感じて宮にはいった。すると律法に定めてあることを行うため、両親もその子イエスを連れてはいってきたので、

²⁸Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

²⁸シメオンは幼な子を腕に抱き、神をほめたたえて言った、

²⁹Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

²⁹「主よ、今こそ、あなたはみ言葉のとおりにこの僕を安らかに去らせてくださいます、

³⁰For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

³⁰わたしの目が今あなたの救を見たのですから。

³¹Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

³¹この救はあなたが万民のまえにお備えになったもので、

³²A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

³²異邦人を照す啓示の光、み民イスラエルの栄光であります」。

³³And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him.

³³父と母とは幼な子についてこのように語られたことを、不思議に思った。

³⁴And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

³⁴するとシメオンは彼らを祝し、そして母マリヤに言った、「ごらんなさい、この幼な子は、イスラエルの多くの人を倒れさせたり立ちあがらせたりするために、また反対を受けるしるしとして、定められています。――

³⁵(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.

³⁵そして、あなた自身もつるぎで胸を刺し貫かれるでしょう。――それは多くの人の心にある思いが、現れるようになるためです」。

³⁶And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity;

³⁶また、アセル族のパヌエルの娘で、アンナという女預言者がいた。彼女は非常に年をとっていた。むすめ時代にとついで、七年間だけ夫と共に住み、

³⁷And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

³⁷その後やもめぐらしをし、八十四歳になっていた。そして宮を離れずに夜も昼も断食と祈とをもって神に仕えていた。

³⁸And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

³⁸この老女も、ちょうどそのとき近寄ってきて、神に感謝をささげ、そしてこの幼な子のことを、エルサレムの救を待ち望んでいるすべての人々に語りきかせた。

³⁹And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.

³⁹両親は主の律法どおりすべての事をすませたので、ガリラヤへむかい、自分の町ナザレに帰った。

⁴⁰And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

⁴⁰幼な子は、ますます成長して強くなり、知恵に満ち、そして神の恵みがその上にあった。

⁴¹Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

⁴¹さて、イエスの両親は、過越の祭には毎年エルサレムへ上っていた。

⁴²And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

⁴²イエスが十二歳になった時も、慣例に従って祭のために上京した。

⁴³And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

⁴³ところが、祭が終って帰るとき、少年イエスはエルサレムに居残っておられたが、両親はそれに気づかなかった。

⁴⁴But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

⁴⁴そして道連れの中にいることと思いこんで、一日路を行ってしまい、それから、親族や知人の中を捜しはじめたが、

⁴⁵And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

⁴⁵見つからないので、捜しまわりながらエルサレムへ引返した。

⁴⁶And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

⁴⁶そして三日の後に、イエスが宮の中で教師たちのまん中にすわって、彼らの話を聞いたり質問したりしておられるのを見つけた。

⁴⁷And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

⁴⁷聞く人々はみな、イエスの賢さやその答に驚嘆していた。

⁴⁸And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

⁴⁸両親はこれを見て驚き、そして母が彼に言った、「どうしてこんな事をしてくれたのです。ごらんなさい、おとう様もわたしも心配して、あなたを捜していたのです」。

⁴⁹And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

⁴⁹するとイエスは言われた、「どうしてお捜しになったのですか。わたしが自分の父の家にいるはずのことを、ご存じなかったのですか」。

⁵⁰And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

⁵⁰しかし、両親はその語られた言葉を悟ることができなかった。

⁵¹And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

⁵¹それからイエスは両親と一緒にナザレに下って行き、彼らにお仕えになった。母はこれらの事をみな心に留めていた。イエスはますます知恵が加わり、背たけも伸び、そして神と人から愛された。

⁵²And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
