¹Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

²Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

²アンナスとカヤパとが大祭司であったとき、神の言が荒野でザカリヤの子ヨハネに臨んだ。

³And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

³彼はヨルダンのほとりの全地方に行って、罪のゆるしを得させる悔改めのバプテスマを宣べ伝えた。

⁴As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

⁴それは、預言者イザヤの言葉の書に書いてあるとおりである。すなわち「荒野で呼ばわる者の声がする、『主の道を備えよ、その道筋をまっすぐにせよ』。

⁵Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

⁵すべての谷は埋められ、すべての山と丘とは、平らにされ、曲ったところはまっすぐに、わるい道はならされ、

⁶And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

⁶人はみな神の救を見るであろう」。

⁷Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁷さて、ヨハネは、彼からバプテスマを受けようとして出てきた群衆にむかって言った、「まむしの子らよ、迫ってきている神の怒りから、のがれられると、おまえたちにだれが教えたのか。

⁸Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

⁸だから、悔改めにふさわしい実を結べ。自分たちの父にはアブラハムがあるなどと、心の中で思ってもみるな。おまえたちに言っておく。神はこれらの石ころからでも、アブラハムの子を起すことができるのだ。

⁹And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

⁹斧がすでに木の根もとに置かれている。だから、良い実を結ばない木はことごとく切られて、火の中に投げ込まれるのだ」。

¹⁰And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

¹⁰そこで群衆が彼に、「それでは、わたしたちは何をすればよいのですか」と尋ねた。

¹¹He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

¹¹彼は答えて言った、「下着を二枚もっている者は、持たない者に分けてやりなさい。食物を持っている者も同様にしなさい」。

¹²Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

¹²取税人もバプテスマを受けにきて、彼に言った、「先生、わたしたちは何をすればよいのですか」。

¹³And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

¹³彼らに言った、「きまっているもの以上に取り立ててはいけない」。

¹⁴And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

¹⁴兵卒たちもたずねて言った、「では、わたしたちは何をすればよいのですか」。彼は言った、「人をおどかしたり、だまし取ったりしてはいけない。自分の給与で満足していなさい」。

¹⁵And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

¹⁵民衆は救主を待ち望んでいたので、みな心の中でヨハネのことを、もしかしたらこの人がそれではなかろうかと考えていた。

¹⁶John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

¹⁶そこでヨハネはみんなの者にむかって言った、「わたしは水でおまえたちにバプテスマを授けるが、わたしよりも力のあるかたが、おいでになる。わたしには、そのくつのひもを解く値うちもない。このかたは、聖霊と火とによっておまえたちにバプテスマをお授けになるであろう。

¹⁷Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

¹⁷また、箕を手に持って、打ち場の麦をふるい分け、麦は倉に納め、からは消えない火で焼き捨てるであろう」。

¹⁸And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.

¹⁸こうしてヨハネはほかにもなお、さまざまの勧めをして、民衆に教を説いた。

¹⁹But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,

¹⁹ところが領主ヘロデは、兄弟の妻ヘロデヤのことで、また自分がしたあらゆる悪事について、ヨハネから非難されていたので、

²⁰Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

²⁰彼を獄に閉じ込めて、いろいろな悪事の上に、もう一つこの悪事を重ねた。

²¹Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

²¹さて、民衆がみなバプテスマを受けたとき、イエスもバプテスマを受けて祈っておられると、天が開けて、

²²And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

²²聖霊がはとのような姿をとってイエスの上に下り、そして天から声がした、「あなたはわたしの愛する子、わたしの心にかなう者である」。

²³And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

²³イエスが宣教をはじめられたのは、年およそ三十歳の時であって、人々の考えによれば、ヨセフの子であった。ヨセフはヘリの子、

²⁴Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,

²⁴それから、さかのぼって、マタテ、レビ、メルキ、ヤンナイ、ヨセフ、

²⁵Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,
