¹At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,

¹そのころ、領主ヘロデはイエスのうわさを聞いて、

²And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

²家来に言った、「あれはバプテスマのヨハネだ。死人の中からよみがえったのだ。それで、あのような力が彼のうちに働いているのだ」。

³For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.

³というのは、ヘロデは先に、自分の兄弟ピリポの妻ヘロデヤのことで、ヨハネを捕えて縛り、獄に入れていた。

⁴For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

⁴すなわち、ヨハネはヘロデに、「その女をめとるのは、よろしくない」と言ったからである。

⁵And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

⁵そこでヘロデはヨハネを殺そうと思ったが、群衆を恐れた。彼らがヨハネを預言者と認めていたからである。

⁶But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

⁶さてヘロデの誕生日の祝に、ヘロデヤの娘がその席上で舞をまい、ヘロデを喜ばせたので、

⁷Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

⁷彼女の願うものは、なんでも与えようと、彼は誓って約束までした。

⁸And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

⁸すると彼女は母にそそのかされて、「バプテスマのヨハネの首を盆に載せて、ここに持ってきていただきとうございます」と言った。

⁹And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

⁹王は困ったが、いったん誓ったのと、また列座の人たちの手前、それを与えるように命じ、

¹⁰And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

¹⁰人をつかわして、獄中でヨハネの首を切らせた。

¹¹And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

¹¹その首は盆に載せて運ばれ、少女にわたされ、少女はそれを母のところに持って行った。

¹²And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

¹²それから、ヨハネの弟子たちがきて、死体を引き取って葬った。そして、イエスのところに行って報告した。

¹³When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.

¹³イエスはこのことを聞くと、舟に乗ってそこを去り、自分ひとりで寂しい所へ行かれた。しかし、群衆はそれと聞いて、町々から徒歩であとを追ってきた。

¹⁴And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

¹⁴イエスは舟から上がって、大ぜいの群衆をごらんになり、彼らを深くあわれんで、そのうちの病人たちをおいやしになった。

¹⁵And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.

¹⁵夕方になったので、弟子たちがイエスのもとにきて言った、「ここは寂しい所でもあり、もう時もおそくなりました。群衆を解散させ、めいめいで食物を買いに、村々へ行かせてください」。

¹⁶But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.

¹⁶するとイエスは言われた、「彼らが出かけて行くには及ばない。あなたがたの手で食物をやりなさい」。

¹⁷And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

¹⁷弟子たちは言った、「わたしたちはここに、パン五つと魚二ひきしか持っていません」。

¹⁸He said, Bring them hither to me.

¹⁸イエスは言われた、「それをここに持ってきなさい」。

¹⁹And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

¹⁹そして群衆に命じて、草の上にすわらせ、五つのパンと二ひきの魚とを手に取り、天を仰いでそれを祝福し、パンをさいて弟子たちに渡された。弟子たちはそれを群衆に与えた。

²⁰And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

²⁰みんなの者は食べて満腹した。パンくずの残りを集めると、十二のかごにいっぱいになった。

²¹And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.

²¹食べた者は、女と子供とを除いて、おおよそ五千人であった。

²²And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

²²それからすぐ、イエスは群衆を解散させておられる間に、しいて弟子たちを舟に乗り込ませ、向こう岸へ先におやりになった。

²³And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.

²³そして群衆を解散させてから、祈るためひそかに山へ登られた。夕方になっても、ただひとりそこにおられた。

²⁴But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

²⁴ところが舟は、もうすでに陸から数丁も離れており、逆風が吹いていたために、波に悩まされていた。

²⁵And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

²⁵イエスは夜明けの四時ごろ、海の上を歩いて彼らの方へ行かれた。

²⁶And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

²⁶弟子たちは、イエスが海の上を歩いておられるのを見て、幽霊だと言っておじ惑い、恐怖のあまり叫び声をあげた。

²⁷But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

²⁷しかし、イエスはすぐに彼らに声をかけて、「しっかりするのだ、わたしである。恐れることはない」と言われた。

²⁸And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

²⁸するとペテロが答えて言った、「主よ、あなたでしたか。では、わたしに命じて、水の上を渡ってみもとに行かせてください」。

²⁹And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

²⁹イエスは、「おいでなさい」と言われたので、ペテロは舟からおり、水の上を歩いてイエスのところへ行った。

³⁰But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

³⁰しかし、風を見て恐ろしくなり、そしておぼれかけたので、彼は叫んで、「主よ、お助けください」と言った。

³¹And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

³¹イエスはすぐに手を伸ばし、彼をつかまえて言われた、「信仰の薄い者よ、なぜ疑ったのか」。

³²And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

³²ふたりが舟に乗り込むと、風はやんでしまった。

³³Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

³³舟の中にいた者たちはイエスを拝して、「ほんとうに、あなたは神の子です」と言った。

³⁴And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.

³⁴それから、彼らは海を渡ってゲネサレの地に着いた。

³⁵And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;

³⁵するとその土地の人々はイエスと知って、その附近全体に人をつかわし、イエスのところに病人をみな連れてこさせた。そして彼らにイエスの上着のふさにでも、さわらせてやっていただきたいとお願いした。そしてさわった者は皆いやされた。

³⁶And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
