¹Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

²Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

²わたしたちの父なる神と主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。

³I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

³わたしはあなたがたを思うたびごとに、わたしの神に感謝し、

⁴Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

⁴あなたがた一同のために祈るとき、いつも喜びをもって祈り、

⁵For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;

⁵あなたがたが最初の日から今日に至るまで、福音にあずかっていることを感謝している。

⁶Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

⁶そして、あなたがたのうちに良いわざを始められたかたが、キリスト・イエスの日までにそれを完成して下さるにちがいないと、確信している。

⁷Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.

⁷わたしが、あなたがた一同のために、そう考えるのは当然である。それは、わたしが獄に捕われている時にも、福音を弁明し立証する時にも、あなたがたをみな、共に恵みにあずかる者として、わたしの心に深く留めているからである。

⁸For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

⁸わたしがキリスト・イエスの熱愛をもって、どんなに深くあなたがた一同を思っていることか、それを証明して下さるかたは神である。

⁹And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

⁹わたしはこう祈る。あなたがたの愛が、深い知識において、するどい感覚において、いよいよ増し加わり、

¹⁰That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.

¹⁰それによって、あなたがたが、何が重要であるかを判別することができ、キリストの日に備えて、純真で責められるところのないものとなり、

¹¹Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

¹¹イエス・キリストによる義の実に満たされて、神の栄光とほまれとをあらわすに至るように。

¹²But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;

¹²さて、兄弟たちよ。わたしの身に起った事が、むしろ福音の前進に役立つようになったことを、あなたがたに知ってもらいたい。

¹³So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;

¹³すなわち、わたしが獄に捕われているのはキリストのためであることが、兵営全体にもそのほかのすべての人々にも明らかになり、

¹⁴And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

¹⁴そして兄弟たちのうち多くの者は、わたしの入獄によって主にある確信を得、恐れることなく、ますます勇敢に、神の言を語るようになった。

¹⁵Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

¹⁵一方では、ねたみや闘争心からキリストを宣べ伝える者がおり、他方では善意からそうする者がいる。

¹⁶The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

¹⁶後者は、わたしが福音を弁明するために立てられていることを知り、愛の心でキリストを伝え、

¹⁷But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

¹⁷前者は、わたしの入獄の苦しみに更に患難を加えようと思って、純真な心からではなく、党派心からそうしている。

¹⁸What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

¹⁸すると、どうなのか。見えからであるにしても、真実からであるにしても、要するに、伝えられているのはキリストなのだから、わたしはそれを喜んでいるし、また喜ぶであろう。

¹⁹For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

¹⁹なぜなら、あなたがたの祈と、イエス・キリストの霊の助けとによって、この事がついには、わたしの救となることを知っているからである。

²⁰According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

²⁰そこで、わたしが切実な思いで待ち望むことは、わたしが、どんなことがあっても恥じることなく、かえって、いつものように今も、大胆に語ることによって、生きるにも死ぬにも、わたしの身によってキリストがあがめられることである。

²¹For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

²¹わたしにとっては、生きることはキリストであり、死ぬことは益である。

²²But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.

²²しかし、肉体において生きていることが、わたしにとっては実り多い働きになるのだとすれば、どちらを選んだらよいか、わたしにはわからない。

²³For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

²³わたしは、これら二つのものの間に板ばさみになっている。わたしの願いを言えば、この世を去ってキリストと共にいることであり、実は、その方がはるかに望ましい。

²⁴Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.

²⁴しかし、肉体にとどまっていることは、あなたがたのためには、さらに必要である。

²⁵And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;

²⁵こう確信しているので、わたしは生きながらえて、あなたがた一同のところにとどまり、あなたがたの信仰を進ませ、その喜びを得させようと思う。

²⁶That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.

²⁶そうなれば、わたしが再びあなたがたのところに行くので、あなたがたはわたしによってキリスト・イエスにある誇を増すことになろう。

²⁷Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

²⁷ただ、あなたがたはキリストの福音にふさわしく生活しなさい。そして、わたしが行ってあなたがたに会うにしても、離れているにしても、あなたがたが一つの霊によって堅く立ち、一つ心になって福音の信仰のために力を合わせて戦い、

²⁸And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.

²⁸かつ、何事についても、敵対する者どもにろうばいさせられないでいる様子を、聞かせてほしい。このことは、彼らには滅びのしるし、あなたがたには救のしるしであって、それは神から来るのである。

²⁹For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

²⁹あなたがたはキリストのために、ただ彼を信じることだけではなく、彼のために苦しむことをも賜わっている。あなたがたは、さきにわたしについて見、今またわたしについて聞いているのと同じ苦闘を、続けているのである。

³⁰Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

³⁰あなたがたは、さきにわたしについて見、今またわたしについて聞いているのと同じ苦闘を、続けているのである。
