¹Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

²Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

²したがって、権威に逆らう者は、神の定めにそむく者である。そむく者は、自分の身にさばきを招くことになる。

³For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:

³いったい、支配者たちは、善事をする者には恐怖でなく、悪事をする者にこそ恐怖である。あなたは権威を恐れないことを願うのか。それでは、善事をするがよい。そうすれば、彼からほめられるであろう。

⁴For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

⁴彼は、あなたに益を与えるための神の僕なのである。しかし、もしあなたが悪事をすれば、恐れなければならない。彼はいたずらに剣を帯びているのではない。彼は神の僕であって、悪事を行う者に対しては、怒りをもって報いるからである。

⁵Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

⁵だから、ただ怒りをのがれるためだけではなく、良心のためにも従うべきである。

⁶For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.

⁶あなたがたが貢を納めるのも、また同じ理由からである。彼らは神に仕える者として、もっぱらこの務に携わっているのである。

⁷Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

⁷あなたがたは、彼らすべてに対して、義務を果しなさい。すなわち、貢を納むべき者には貢を納め、税を納むべき者には税を納め、恐るべき者は恐れ、敬うべき者は敬いなさい。

⁸Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

⁸互に愛し合うことの外は、何人にも借りがあってはならない。人を愛する者は、律法を全うするのである。

⁹For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

⁹「姦淫するな、殺すな、盗むな、むさぼるな」など、そのほかに、どんな戒めがあっても、結局「自分を愛するようにあなたの隣り人を愛せよ」というこの言葉に帰する。

¹⁰Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

¹⁰愛は隣り人に害を加えることはない。だから、愛は律法を完成するものである。

¹¹And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

¹¹なお、あなたがたは時を知っているのだから、特に、この事を励まねばならない。すなわち、あなたがたの眠りからさめるべき時が、すでにきている。なぜなら今は、わたしたちの救が、初め信じた時よりも、もっと近づいているからである。

¹²The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

¹²夜はふけ、日が近づいている。それだから、わたしたちは、やみのわざを捨てて、光の武具を着けようではないか。

¹³Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

¹³そして、宴楽と泥酔、淫乱と好色、争いとねたみを捨てて、昼歩くように、つつましく歩こうではないか。あなたがたは、主イエス・キリストを着なさい。肉の欲を満たすことに心を向けてはならない。

¹⁴But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
