¹What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

¹それでは、肉によるわたしたちの先祖アブラハムの場合については、なんと言ったらよいか。

²For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

²もしアブラハムが、その行いによって義とされたのであれば、彼は誇ることができよう。しかし、神のみまえでは、できない。

³For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

³なぜなら、聖書はなんと言っているか、「アブラハムは神を信じた。それによって、彼は義と認められた」とある。

⁴Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

⁴いったい、働く人に対する報酬は、恩恵としてではなく、当然の支払いとして認められる。

⁵But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

⁵しかし、働きはなくても、不信心な者を義とするかたを信じる人は、その信仰が義と認められるのである。

⁶Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

⁶ダビデもまた、行いがなくても神に義と認められた人の幸福について、次のように言っている、

⁷Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

⁷「不法をゆるされ、罪をおおわれた人たちは、さいわいである。

⁸Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

⁸罪を主に認められない人は、さいわいである」。

⁹Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.

⁹さて、この幸福は、割礼の者だけが受けるのか。それとも、無割礼の者にも及ぶのか。わたしたちは言う、「アブラハムには、その信仰が義と認められた」のである。

¹⁰How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.

¹⁰それでは、どういう場合にそう認められたのか。割礼を受けてからか、それとも受ける前か。割礼を受けてからではなく、無割礼の時であった。

¹¹And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

¹¹そして、アブラハムは割礼というしるしを受けたが、それは、無割礼のままで信仰によって受けた義の証印であって、彼が、無割礼のままで信じて義とされるに至るすべての人の父となり、

¹²And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

¹²かつ、割礼の者の父となるためなのである。割礼の者というのは、割礼を受けた者ばかりではなく、われらの父アブラハムが無割礼の時に持っていた信仰の足跡を踏む人々をもさすのである。

¹³For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

¹³なぜなら、世界を相続させるとの約束が、アブラハムとその子孫とに対してなされたのは、律法によるのではなく、信仰の義によるからである。

¹⁴For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

¹⁴もし、律法に立つ人々が相続人であるとすれば、信仰はむなしくなり、約束もまた無効になってしまう。

¹⁵Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.

¹⁵いったい、律法は怒りを招くものであって、律法のないところには違反なるものはない。

¹⁶Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

¹⁶このようなわけで、すべては信仰によるのである。それは恵みによるのであって、すべての子孫に、すなわち、律法に立つ者だけにではなく、アブラハムの信仰に従う者にも、この約束が保証されるのである。アブラハムは、神の前で、わたしたちすべての者の父であって、

¹⁷(As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

¹⁷「わたしは、あなたを立てて多くの国民の父とした」と書いてあるとおりである。彼はこの神、すなわち、死人を生かし、無から有を呼び出される神を信じたのである。

¹⁸Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

¹⁸彼は望み得ないのに、なおも望みつつ信じた。そのために、「あなたの子孫はこうなるであろう」と言われているとおり、多くの国民の父となったのである。

¹⁹And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:

¹⁹すなわち、およそ百歳となって、彼自身のからだが死んだ状態であり、また、サラの胎が不妊であるのを認めながらも、なお彼の信仰は弱らなかった。

²⁰He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

²⁰彼は、神の約束を不信仰のゆえに疑うようなことはせず、かえって信仰によって強められ、栄光を神に帰し、

²¹And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

²¹神はその約束されたことを、また成就することができると確信した。

²²And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.

²²だから、彼は義と認められたのである。

²³Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;

²³しかし「義と認められた」と書いてあるのは、アブラハムのためだけではなく、

²⁴But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

²⁴わたしたちのためでもあって、わたしたちの主イエスを死人の中からよみがえらせたかたを信じるわたしたちも、義と認められるのである。主は、わたしたちの罪過のために死に渡され、わたしたちが義とされるために、よみがえらされたのである。

²⁵Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
