¹Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?

¹Da Jakob fikk vite at det var korn i Egypten, sa han til sine sønner: Hvorfor sitter I og ser på hverandre?

²And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.

²Og han sa: Jeg har hørt at det er korn i Egypten; dra dit ned og kjøp korn til oss der, så vi kan leve og ikke dø!

³And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.

³Da drog Josefs ti brødre ned for å kjøpe korn i Egypten.

⁴But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest peradventure mischief befall him.

⁴Men Benjamin, Josefs bror, sendte Jakob ikke avsted med hans brødre; for han sa: Det kunde møte ham en ulykke.

⁵And the sons of Israel came to buy corn among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

⁵Så kom Israels sønner for å kjøpe korn blandt alle de andre som kom; for det var hungersnød i Kana'ans land.

⁶And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.

⁶Og Josef var den som rådet i landet; det var han som solgte korn til alt folket i landet; og Josefs brødre kom og bøide sig med sitt ansikt til jorden for ham.

⁷And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

⁷Da Josef så sine brødre, kjente han dem igjen; men han lot som om de var fremmede for ham, og talte hårdt til dem og sa til dem: Hvor kommer I fra? De sa: Fra Kana'ans land for å kjøpe korn.

⁸And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.

⁸Josef kjente sine brødre, men de kjente ikke ham.

⁹And Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and said unto them, Ye are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

⁹Og Josef kom i hu det han hadde drømt om dem, og sa til dem: I er speidere, I er kommet for å se hvor landet ligger åpent.

¹⁰And they said unto him, Nay, my lord, but to buy food are thy servants come.

¹⁰De svarte ham: Nei, herre, dine tjenere er kommet for å kjøpe korn.

¹¹We are all one man's sons; we are true men, thy servants are no spies.

¹¹Vi er alle sønner av én mann; vi er ærlige folk, dine tjenere er ikke speidere.

¹²And he said unto them, Nay, but to see the nakedness of the land ye are come.

¹²Men han sa til dem: Jo, I er kommet for å se hvor landet ligger åpent.

¹³And they said, Thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

¹³Men de sa: Vi, dine tjenere, er tolv brødre, sønner av én mann i Kana'ans land, den yngste er nu hjemme hos vår far, og én er ikke mere til.

¹⁴And Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you, saying, Ye are spies:

¹⁴Josef sa til dem: Det er som jeg har sagt til eder: I er speidere.

¹⁵Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come hither.

¹⁵Men nu skal I prøves: Så sant Farao lever, skal I ikke komme herfra før eders yngste bror kommer hit.

¹⁶Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies.

¹⁶Send en av eder avsted for å hente eders bror, men I andre skal holdes fanget, og eders ord skal prøves, om det er sant det I sier; hvis ikke, så er I, så sant Farao lever, speidere.

¹⁷And he put them all together into ward three days.

¹⁷Og han holdt dem alle sammen i fengsel i tre dager.

¹⁸And Joseph said unto them the third day, This do, and live; for I fear God:

¹⁸Men den tredje dag sa Josef til dem: Gjør som jeg nu sier, så skal I leve! Jeg frykter Gud.

¹⁹If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:

¹⁹Dersom I er ærlige folk, så skal en av eder brødre bli tilbake i fengslet, men I andre kan dra avsted og ha med eder korn til hjelp mot hungersnøden i eders hjem,

²⁰But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.

²⁰og før eders yngste bror til mig, så eders ord kan sannes, og I ikke skal dø. Og de så gjorde.

²¹And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

²¹Og de sa sig imellem: Sannelig, vi har skyld på oss for vår bror. Vi så hans sjeleangst da han bønnfalt oss, og vi vilde ikke høre; derfor er denne nød kommet over oss.

²²And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.

²²Da tok Ruben til orde og sa til dem: Sa jeg ikke til eder: Gjør ikke synd mot gutten? Men I vilde ikke høre; se, derfor kreves nu hans blod.

²³And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.

²³Men de visste ikke at Josef forstod det; for han brukte tolk når han talte med dem.

²⁴And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.

²⁴Og han vendte sig fra dem og gråt. Så vendte han sig til dem igjen og talte til dem, og han tok Simeon fra dem og lot ham binde så de så på.

²⁵Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them.

²⁵Og Josef bød sine folk at de skulde fylle deres sekker med korn og legge enhvers penger igjen i hans sekk og gi dem niste med på veien. Og de gjorde således med dem.

²⁶And they laded their asses with the corn, and departed thence.

²⁶Så la de kornet på sine asener og drog derfra.

²⁷And as one of them opened his sack to give his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth.

²⁷Men da en av dem åpnet sin sekk for å gi sitt asen fôr i herberget, da fikk han se sine penger, de lå øverst i hans sekk.

²⁸And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?

²⁸Og han sa til sine brødre: Mine penger er kommet igjen, og se, de ligger her i min sekk. Da blev de motfalne og vendte sig forferdet til hverandre og sa: Hvad er det Gud har gjort mot oss?

²⁹And they came unto Jacob their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befell unto them; saying,

²⁹Så kom de hjem til Jakob, sin far, i Kana'ans land, og de fortalte ham alt det som hadde hendt dem, og sa:

³⁰The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country.

³⁰Mannen som råder der i landet, talte hårdt til oss og tok oss for folk som vilde speide ut landet.

³¹And we said unto him, We are true men; we are no spies:

³¹Og vi sa til ham: Vi er ærlige folk, vi er ikke speidere;

³²We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

³²vi er tolv brødre, alle sønner av samme far, én er ikke mere til, og den yngste er nu hjemme hos vår far i Kana'ans land.

³³And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:

³³Da sa mannen som råder der i landet, til oss: Av dette vil jeg forstå om I er ærlige folk: La en av eder brødre bli her hos mig og ta hvad I trenger mot hungersnøden i eders hjem, og far eders vei;

³⁴And bring your youngest brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, and ye shall traffic in the land.

³⁴og kom så hit til mig med eders yngste bror, så jeg kan forstå at I ikke er speidere, men ærlige folk! Da vil jeg gi eder eders bror igjen, og I kan fritt dra omkring i landet.

³⁵And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they were afraid.

³⁵Da de så tømte sine sekker, se, da lå enhvers pengepung i hans sekk; og da de og deres far så pengepungene, blev de redde.

³⁶And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.

³⁶Og Jakob, deres far, sa til dem: I gjør mig barnløs; Josef er ikke mere til, og Simeon er ikke mere til, og Benjamin vil I ta fra mig; det kommer over mig alt sammen.

³⁷And Reuben spake unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.

³⁷Da sa Ruben til sin far: Begge mine sønner kan du drepe hvis jeg ikke kommer tilbake til dig med ham; gi ham i min hånd, så vil jeg føre ham tilbake til dig.

³⁸And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.

³⁸Men han sa: Min sønn skal ikke dra ned med eder; for hans bror er død, og han er alene tilbake, og dersom det møter ham nogen ulykke på den vei som I drar, så kommer I til å sende mine grå hår med sorg ned i dødsriket.

³⁹Men hungersnøden var hård i landet.
