¹And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

²And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

²og de begynte å føre klagemål imot ham og sa: Denne mann har vi funnet vill-leder vårt folk og forbyder å gi keiseren skatt, og sier om sig selv at han er Messias, en konge.

³And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

³Da spurte Pilatus ham: Er du jødenes konge? Han svarte ham: Du sier det.

⁴Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

⁴Da sa Pilatus til yppersteprestene og folket: Jeg finner ingen skyld hos denne mann.

⁵And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

⁵Men de tok sterkere i og sa: Han opvigler folket, han lærer over hele Jødeland, fra Galilea av, hvor han begynte, og like hit.

⁶When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.

⁶Da Pilatus hørte det, spurte han om mannen var fra Galilea,

⁷And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

⁷og da han fikk vite at han hørte under Herodes, sendte han ham til Herodes, som også var i Jerusalem i de dager.

⁸And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

⁸Og da Herodes så Jesus, blev han meget glad; for han hadde i lang tid ønsket å få se ham, fordi han hadde hørt om ham, og han håpet å få se et tegn av ham.

⁹Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

⁹Han spurte ham da med mange ord; men Jesus svarte ham intet.

¹⁰And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.

¹⁰Og yppersteprestene og de skriftlærde stod og klaget hårdt på ham.

¹¹And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

¹¹Men Herodes med sine krigsfolk hånte og spottet ham; derefter kastet han et skinnende klædebon om ham og sendte ham således tilbake til Pilatus.

¹²And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

¹²Den dag blev Pilatus og Herodes venner; før hadde de ligget i fiendskap med hverandre.

¹³And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

¹³Da kalte Pilatus yppersteprestene og rådsherrene og folket sammen

¹⁴Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:

¹⁴og sa til dem: I har ført denne mann frem for mig som en som forfører folket til frafall; og se, jeg har tatt ham i forhør for eders øine, men jeg har ikke funnet denne mann skyldig i noget av det I klager på ham for;

¹⁵No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.

¹⁵Herodes heller ikke; for jeg sendte eder til ham; og se, han har ikke gjort noget som fortjener døden.

¹⁶I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

¹⁶Derfor vil jeg refse ham og så gi ham fri.

¹⁷(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)

¹⁷Men på høitiden måtte han gi dem én fri.

¹⁸And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:

¹⁸De ropte da alle som én: Bort med denne, men gi oss Barabbas fri!

¹⁹(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

¹⁹Dette var en som var kastet i fengsel for et oprør som hadde vært i byen, og for et mord.

²⁰Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.

²⁰Pilatus talte da atter til dem, fordi han gjerne vilde gi Jesus fri.

²¹But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

²¹Men de ropte til ham og sa: Korsfest, korsfest ham!

²²And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.

²²Da sa han for tredje gang til dem: Hvad ondt har da denne mann gjort? Jeg har ikke funnet nogen dødsskyld hos ham; derfor vil jeg refse ham og så gi ham fri.

²³And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.

²³Men de trengte på med stort skrik og krevde at han skulde korsfestes; og deres skrik fikk overhånd.

²⁴And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

²⁴Så felte da Pilatus den dom at det skulde skje som de krevde;

²⁵And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

²⁵og han gav den fri som var kastet i fengsel for oprør og mord, ham som de bad om; men Jesus overgav han til deres vilje.

²⁶And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

²⁶Og da de førte ham bort, tok de fatt på en mann ved navn Simon, fra Kyrene, som kom fra landet, og de la korset på ham, forat han skulde bære det efter Jesus.

²⁷And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.

²⁷Og en stor mengde av folket fulgte ham og mange kvinner, som jamret sig og gråt over ham.

²⁸But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

²⁸Men Jesus vendte sig om til dem og sa: I Jerusalems døtre! gråt ikke over mig, men gråt over eder selv og over eders barn!

²⁹For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

²⁹For se, de dager skal komme da de skal si: Salige er de ufruktbare og det liv som ikke fødte, og det bryst som ikke gav die.

³⁰Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

³⁰Da skal de begynne å si til fjellene: Fall over oss! og til haugene: Skjul oss!

³¹For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

³¹For gjør de så med det grønne tre, hvorledes skal det da gå det tørre?

³²And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

³²Også to andre, to ugjerningsmenn, blev ført bort med ham for å avlives.

³³And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

³³Og da de var kommet til det sted som kalles Hodeskallen, korsfestet de der både ham og ugjerningsmennene, den ene på hans høire og den andre på hans venstre side.

³⁴Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

³⁴Men Jesus sa: Fader, forlat dem! for de vet ikke hvad de gjør. Og de delte hans klær mellem sig og kastet lodd om dem.

³⁵And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.

³⁵Og folket stod og så på; men rådsherrene spottet ham og sa: Andre har han frelst, la ham nu frelse sig selv dersom han er Guds Messias, den utvalgte!

³⁶And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,

³⁶Også stridsmennene hånte ham, de gikk bort til ham og rakte ham eddik og sa:

³⁷And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

³⁷Er du jødenes konge, da frels dig selv!

³⁸And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

³⁸Men det var også satt en innskrift over ham: Dette er jødenes konge.

³⁹And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

³⁹En av ugjerningsmennene som hang der, spottet ham og sa: Er ikke du Messias? Frels dig selv og oss!

⁴⁰But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

⁴⁰Men den andre svarte og irettesatte ham og sa: Frykter du ikke engang for Gud, du som dog er under samme dom?

⁴¹And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

⁴¹Og vi med rette; for vi får igjen hvad våre gjerninger har forskyldt; men denne har ikke gjort noget galt.

⁴²And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

⁴²Og han sa: Jesus! kom mig i hu når du kommer i ditt rike!

⁴³And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

⁴³Og han sa til ham: Sannelig sier jeg dig: Idag skal du være med mig i Paradis.

⁴⁴And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

⁴⁴Og det var omkring den sjette time, da blev det mørke over hele landet like til den niende time,

⁴⁵And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

⁴⁵og solen blev formørket, og forhenget i templet revnet midtefter.

⁴⁶And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

⁴⁶Og Jesus ropte med høi røst og sa: Fader! i dine hender overgir jeg min ånd! Og da han hadde sagt dette, utåndet han.

⁴⁷Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

⁴⁷Men da høvedsmannen så det som skjedde, gav han Gud æren og sa: Sannelig, denne mann var rettferdig!

⁴⁸And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.

⁴⁸Og alt folket som var kommet sammen for å se dette syn, slo sig for sitt bryst og vendte tilbake da de så hvad som skjedde.

⁴⁹And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

⁴⁹Men alle hans kjenninger og de kvinner som hadde fulgt ham fra Galilea, stod langt borte og så dette.

⁵⁰And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:

⁵⁰Og se, det var en mann ved navn Josef, som var rådsherre, og en god og rettferdig mann -

⁵¹(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

⁵¹han hadde ikke samtykket i deres råd og gjerning - fra den jødiske by Arimatea, og han ventet på Guds rike;

⁵²This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

⁵²han gikk til Pilatus og bad om Jesu legeme,

⁵³And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

⁵³og han tok det ned og svøpte det i fint linklæde, og la det i en grav som var hugget i klippen, og som aldri nogen hadde ligget i.

⁵⁴And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

⁵⁴Det var beredelses-dagen, og sabbaten stundet til.

⁵⁵And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

⁵⁵Men nogen kvinner som var kommet med ham fra Galilea, fulgte med, og de så graven, og hvorledes hans legeme blev lagt.

⁵⁶And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

⁵⁶Så vendte de tilbake og tilberedte velluktende urter og salver, og sabbaten over holdt de sig stille efter lovens bud.
