¹Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

¹ آنگاه سموئیل یک ظرف روغن زیتون را گرفته، بر سر شائول ریخت. بعد او را بوسید و گفت: «خداوند تو را انتخاب فرموده است که فرمانروای اسرائیل باشی. تو بر قوم او فرمانروایی خواهی کرد و آنها را از دست تمام دشمنانشان خواهی رهانید و این نشانهٔ آن است که خداوند تو را برگزیده است تا بر قوم او سلطنت کنی.

²When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

² وقتی از من جدا می‌شوی، دو نفر را در کنار قبر راحیل در شهر صلصح که در سرزمین بنیامین واقع است، خواهی دید. آنها به تو خبر می‌دهند که الاغهایی را که جستجو می‌کردی، پیدا شده‌اند. حالا پدرت در فکر الاغها نیست بلکه به‌خاطر تو نگران است و می‌گوید، پسرم را چطور پیدا کنم.

³Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

³ باز وقتی جلوتر بروی به درخت بلوط تابور می‌رسی. در آنجا سه مرد را می‌بینی که برای پرستش خداوند به بیت‌ئیل می‌روند. یکی از آنها سه بُزغاله، دیگری سه قرص نان و سومی یک مشک شراب با خود دارد.

⁴And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.

⁴ آنها با تو احوالپرسی می‌کنند و به تو دو قرص نان می‌دهند که تو باید آن را بپذیری.

⁵After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

⁵ بعد به کوه خدا در جبعه می‌رسی که در آنجا سربازان فلسطینیان نگهبانی می‌دهند. همین که به شهر وارد می‌شوی با چند نفر از انبیا برمی‌خوری که از کوه پایین می‌آیند و در حال نواختن چنگ و دف و نی و بربط، می‌رقصند و می‌خوانند.

⁶And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

⁶ سپس روح خداوند بر تو قرار می‌گیرد و تو هم با آنها می‌خوانی و به شخص دیگری تبدیل می‌شوی.

⁷And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.

⁷ از آن به بعد هر تصمیمی که می‌گیری انجام بده، زیرا خداوند با تو خواهد بود.

⁸And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and show thee what thou shalt do.

⁸ تو قبل از من به جلجال برو، در آنجا من در وقت ادای مراسم قربانی سوختنی و ذبح کردن قربانی‌‌های سلامتی با تو خواهم بود. هفت روز منتظر من باش تا بیایم و به تو بگویم که چه کارهایی باید بکنی.»

⁹And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.

⁹ وقتی شائول با سموئیل خداحافظی کرد و می‌خواست برود، خدا شخصیّت تازه‌ای به او داد و همهٔ چیزهایی را که سموئیل گفته بود، به حقیقت پیوستند.

¹⁰And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

¹⁰ وقتی شائول و نوکرش به کوه خدا رسیدند گروهی از انبیا را دیدند که به طرف آنها می‌آیند. آنگاه روح خدا بر شائول قرار گرفت و با آنها می‌خواند.

¹¹And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

¹¹ کسانی‌که قبلاً او را می‌شناختند، وقتی دیدند که با انبیا می‌خواند، گفتند: «پسر قیس را چه شده است؟ آیا شائول هم نبی شده است؟»

¹²And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

¹² یک ‌نفر از حاضرین اضافه کرد: «پدرشان کیست؟» از همان زمان این مَثَل وِرد زبان مردم شد که می‌گویند: «شائول هم از جملهٔ انبیاست.»

¹³And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.

¹³ وقتی شائول نبوّتش را تمام کرد، به منزل خود رفت.

¹⁴And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.

¹⁴ عموی شائول از آنها پرسید: «کجا رفته بودید؟» شائول جواب داد: «برای یافتن الاغها رفته بودیم. چون آنها را نیافتیم، پیش سموئیل رفتیم.»

¹⁵And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.

¹⁵ عمویش گفت: «به من بگو که او چه گفت.»

¹⁶And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.

¹⁶ شائول جواب داد: «او به ما گفت که الاغها پیدا شده‌اند.» امّا دربارهٔ پادشاهی چیزی به عموی خود نگفت.

¹⁷And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;

¹⁷ سموئیل قوم اسرائیل را برای یک اجتماع در مصفه دعوت کرد

¹⁸And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:

¹⁸ و به آنها گفت: «خداوند خدای اسرائیل چنین می‌فرماید: 'من قوم اسرائیل را از مصر بیرون آوردم و شما را از دست مردم مصر و ممالکی که بر شما ظلم می‌کردند، نجات دادم.'

¹⁹And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.

¹⁹ امّا امروز شما خدای خود را که شما را از بلاها و مصائب رهایی بخشید، رد کردید. حالا از من می‌خواهید که پادشاهی برایتان انتخاب کنم. بسیار خوب، اکنون به ترتیب طایفهٔ و خاندان به حضور خداوند حاضر شوید.»

²⁰And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

²⁰ پس سموئیل همهٔ طایفه‌های اسرائیل را به حضور خداوند جمع کرد و از بین آنها طایفهٔ بنیامین به حکم قرعه انتخاب شد.

²¹When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.

²¹ سپس همهٔ خانواده‌های طایفهٔ بنیامین را به حضور خداوند آورد و قرعه به نام خانوادهٔ مطری درآمد. سپس هریک از افراد خانوادهٔ مطری حاضر شدند و از بین آنها شائول، پسر قیس انتخاب گردید. امّا وقتی رفتند که او را بیاورند او را نیافتند.

²²Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff.

²² پس از خداوند پرسیدند: «او کجاست؟ آیا او اینجا در بین ماست؟» خداوند جواب داد: «بلی، او خود را در بین اسبابها پنهان کرده است.»

²³And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

²³ آنگاه رفتند و او را آوردند. وقتی در بین مردم ایستاد، یک سر و گردن از دیگران بلندتر بود.

²⁴And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.

²⁴ سموئیل به مردم گفت: «این شخص همان کسی است که خداوند او را به عنوان پادشاه شما انتخاب فرموده است. در تمام قوم اسرائیل مثل او پیدا نمی‌شود.» آنگاه همگی با یک صدا گفتند: «زنده باد پادشاه!»

²⁵Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

²⁵ بعد سموئیل حقوق و وظایف پادشاه را برای مردم شرح داد و همه را در کتابی نوشت و به حضور خداوند تقدیم کرد. سپس مردم را به خانه‌های خود فرستاد.

²⁶And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.

²⁶ شائول هم به خانهٔ خود در جبعه برگشت و مردان نیرومند هم که خدا دل آنها را برانگیخته بود شائول را همراهی کردند. امّا بعضی از اشخاص پستی که در آنجا حاضر بودند، گفتند: «این شخص چطور می‌تواند ما را نجات بدهد؟» پس او را مسخره کردند و هدیه‌‌ای برایش نیاوردند، ولی او حرفی نزد.

²⁷But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought no presents. But he held his peace.

²⁷ امّا بعضی از اشخاص پستی که در آنجا حاضر بودند، گفتند: «این شخص چطور می‌تواند ما را نجات بدهد؟» پس او را مسخره کردند و هدیه‌‌ای برایش نیاوردند، ولی او حرفی نزد.
