¹Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.

¹ مرد مقتدر و ثروتمندی در طایفهٔ بنیامین زندگی می‌کرد به نام قیس. او پسر ابیئیل، ابیئیل پسر صرور، صرور پسر بکورت و بکورت پسر افیح بود.

²And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

² قیس پسر جوان و خوش چهره‌ای داشت به نام شائول که در بین تمام اسرائیل جوان خوش‌اندامی مانند او پیدا نمی‌شد. او یک سر و گردن از دیگران بلندتر بود.

³And the asses of Kish Saul's father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.

³ روزی الاغهای قیس، پدر شائول گُم شدند. قیس به پسر خود، شائول گفت: «برخیز و یکی از خادمان را با خود گرفته، برای یافتن الاغها برو.»

⁴And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.

⁴ آنها از کوهستان‌های افرایم گذشته تا سرزمین شلیشه رفتند امّا الاغها را نیافتند. از آنجا به شعلیم رفتند ولی اثری از الاغها نبود. بعد سراسر سرزمین بنیامین را جستجو نمودند، باز هم الاغها را نیافتند.

⁵And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us.

⁵ وقتی به سرزمین صوف رسیدند، شائول به خادم همراه خود گفت: «بیا بازگردیم. ممکن است حالا پدرم الاغها را فراموش کرده و نگران ما شود.»

⁶And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honorable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can show us our way that we should go.

⁶ امّا خادمش در جواب او گفت: «چیزی به یادم آمد. در این شهر، یک مرد خدا زندگی می‌کند و همهٔ مردم به او احترام می‌گذارند. او هر چیزی که بگوید، حقیقت پیدا می‌کند. بیا پیش او برویم، شاید بتواند ما را راهنمایی کند.»

⁷Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?

⁷ شائول جواب داد: «ولی ما چیزی نداریم که به عنوان هدیه برایش ببریم. نانی را هم که داشتیم تمام شده است و هدیهٔ دیگری هم نداریم که به آن مرد خدا بدهیم. پس چه ببریم؟»

⁸And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.

⁸ خادم گفت: «من یک تکهٔ کوچک نقره دارم، آن را به مرد خدا می‌دهیم تا ما را راهنمایی کند.»

⁹(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)

⁹ شائول قبول کرد و گفت: «بسیار خوب، برویم.» پس آنها به شهر پیش آن مرد خدا رفتند. آنها در راهِ تپّه‌ای که به طرف شهر می‌رفت با چند دختر جوان برخوردند که برای کشیدن آب می‌رفتند. از آن دخترها پرسیدند: «آیا در این شهر، شخص رائی هست؟» در آن زمان وقتی کسی حاجتی ‌داشت، می‌گفت: «بیا نزد یک رائی برویم.» چون به کسانی‌که امروز نبی می‌گویند در آن زمان رائی می‌گفتند.

¹⁰Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.

¹⁰ دخترها جواب دادند: «بلی، او اکنون درست سر راه شماست. اگر عجله کنید، پیش از آن که به شهر برسد، او را خواهید دید. او امروز به شهر آمده است، زیرا مردم برای گذراندن قربانی به قربانگاهی که روی تپّه می‌باشد، آمده‌اند. مردمی که به آنجا دعوت شده‌اند، تا رائی نیاید و دعای برکت نخواند، دست به غذا نمی‌زنند. اگر شما همین حالا بروید، قبل از آنکه او روی تپّه برود، او را ملاقات خواهید نمود.»

¹¹And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?

¹¹ پس آنها به شهر رفتند و دیدند که سموئیل در راه خود به سوی تپّه، به طرف آنها می‌آید.

¹²And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:

¹² یک روز پیش از آمدن شائول، خداوند به سموئیل فرمود:

¹³As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.

¹³ «فردا در همین ساعت مردی را از سرزمین بنیامین پیش تو می‌فرستم. تو او را مسح کرده به عنوان فرمانروای قوم من، اسرائیل انتخاب کن! تا قوم مرا از دست فلسطینیان نجات بدهد. من بر آنها رحم کرده‌ام، زیرا نالهٔ آنها به گوش من رسیده است.»

¹⁴And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.

¹⁴ وقتی سموئیل شائول را دید، خداوند به سموئیل فرمود: «این شخص همان کسی است که من درباره‌اش به تو گفتم! او کسی است که بر قوم من حکومت خواهد کرد.»

¹⁵Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,

¹⁵ لحظه‌ای بعد شائول در پیش دروازهٔ شهر به سموئیل برخورد و گفت: «لطفاً خانهٔ رائی را به ما نشان بده.»

¹⁶To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.

¹⁶ سموئیل جواب داد: «من خودم همان رائی هستم. حالا پیش از من به بالای تپّه برو، زیرا امروز با من غذا می‌خوری. فردا صبح هرچه که می‌خواهی بدانی برایت می‌گویم و بعد می‌توانی به هر جایی می‌خواهی، بروی.

¹⁷And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.

¹⁷ امّا در بارهٔ الاغها که سه روز پیش گُم شده بودند، نگران نباش، چون آنها پیدا شده‌اند. ولی امید مردم اسرائیل بر تو و خانوادهٔ پدرت می‌باشد.»

¹⁸Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is.

¹⁸ شائول جواب داد: «من از طایفهٔ بنیامین هستم که کوچکترین طایفه‌هاست و خانوادهٔ من هم کوچکترین خانواده‌های طایفهٔ بنیامین می‌باشد. چرا این سخنان را به من می‌گویی؟»

¹⁹And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.

¹⁹ آنگاه سموئیل، شائول و خادمش را در سالن بزرگی که در آن در حدود سی نفر مهمان حضور داشتند برد و در صدر مجلس نشاند.

²⁰And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's house?

²⁰ بعد سموئیل به آشپز گفت: «آن تکهٔ گوشت را که به تو دادم و گفتم که آن را پیش خود نگه‌دار، بیاور.»

²¹And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?

²¹ آشپز گوشت را آورد و پیش شائول گذاشت. سموئیل گفت: «این را مخصوصاً برای تو نگه ‌داشته بودم تا در وقت معیّنش آن را بخوری. حالا بفرما، نوش جان کن!» به این ترتیب شائول در آن روز با سموئیل غذا خورد.

²²And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlor, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons.

²² وقتی آنها از تپّه پایین آمدند و به شهر رفتند، بستری برای شائول بر پشت‌بام خانه آماده بود. او دراز کشید و به خواب رفت.

²³And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.

²³ صبح روز بعد سموئیل، شائول را که در پشت بام بود صدا زد و گفت: «برخیز، وقت آن است که بروی.» پس شائول برخاست و با سموئیل بیرون رفت. وقتی آنها به خارج شهر رسیدند، سموئیل به شائول گفت: «به خادمت بگو که جلوتر از ما برود و تو کمی صبر کن، زیرا می‌خواهم پیغامی را که از جانب خداوند دارم، به تو بگویم.»

²⁴And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.

²⁴ وقتی آنها به خارج شهر رسیدند، سموئیل به شائول گفت: «به خادمت بگو که جلوتر از ما برود و تو کمی صبر کن، زیرا می‌خواهم پیغامی را که از جانب خداوند دارم، به تو بگویم.»

²⁵And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.

²⁶And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

²⁷And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on), but stand thou still a while, that I may show thee the word of God.
