¹And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?

¹ بعد داوود از نایوت رامه فرار کرد و پیش یوناتان آمد و گفت: «من چه گناهی کرده‌ام؟ و چه خلافی نسبت به پدرت کرده‌ام که قصد کشتن مرا دارد‌؟»

²And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will show it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.

² یوناتان گفت: «‌خدا نکند! کسی تو را نخواهد کشت. پدرم هر کاری که بخواهد انجام دهد چه کوچک و چه بزرگ اول با من در میان می‌گذارد. چرا پدرم این موضوع را از من پنهان کند؟ این امر حقیقت ندارد.»

³And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.

³ داوود جواب داد: «پدرت خوب می‌داند که من و تو دوست هستیم، پس نخواسته در این مورد چیزی به تو بگوید که مبادا غمگین شوی. به نام خداوند و به جان تو قسم که من با مرگ فقط یک قدم فاصله دارم.»

⁴Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.

⁴ یوناتان به داوود گفت: «هرچه بخواهی برایت انجام خواهم داد.»

⁵And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day at even.

⁵ داوود جواب داد: «فردا اول ماه است و من باید با پدرت سر سفره بنشینم، امّا به من اجازه بده تا غروب روز سوم در صحرا پنهان شوم.

⁶If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

⁶ اگر پدرت دلیل نبودن مرا بر سر سفره بپرسد، بگو که من از تو خواهش کردم تا به من اجازه بدهی که به شهر خود به بیت‌لحم بروم و در مراسم قربانی سالانه با خانوادهٔ خود باشم.

⁷If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.

⁷ اگر بگوید: 'خوب.' می‌دانم که خطری برایم نیست. امّا اگر خشمگین شد، آنگاه مرگ من به دست او حتمی است.

⁸Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?

⁸ پس از تو خواهش می‌کنم که از روی لطف به من کمک کنی، زیرا ما قول دوستی به هم داده‌‌‌ایم. اگر خطایی از من سر زده باشد، خودت مرا بکش، امّا مرا پیش پدرت نبر.»

⁹And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?

⁹ یوناتان گفت: «هرگز چنین فکری نکن! اگر می‌دانستم که پدرم قصد بدی نسبت به تو دارد، آیا به تو نمی‌گفتم؟»

¹⁰Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly?

¹⁰ داوود گفت: «اگر پدرت با خشم به تو جواب دهد چه کسی مرا آگاه خواهد ساخت؟»

¹¹And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

¹¹ یوناتان به داوود گفت: «بیا با هم به مزرعه برویم.» و هر دو به راه افتادند.

¹²And Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and show it thee;

¹² یوناتان به داوود گفت: «در حضور خداوند خدای اسرائیل به تو قول می‌دهم که فردا یا پس فردا، با پدرم دربارهٔ تو حرف می‌زنم و فوراً به تو اطّلاع می‌دهم که او دربارهٔ تو چه فکر می‌کند.

¹³The LORD do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to do thee evil, then I will show it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

¹³ اگر دیدم که خشمگین است و قصد کشتن تو را دارد، به جان خودم قسم می‌خورم که به تو خبر می‌دهم تا بتوانی به سلامتی فرار کنی و خداوند یار و نگهبان تو باشد همان‌طور که با پدرم بوده است!

¹⁴And thou shalt not only while yet I live show me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not:

¹⁴ اگر من زنده ماندم، لطفاً سوگند خود را با من به یاد داشته باش.

¹⁵But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.

¹⁵ اگر مُردم، همان لطف و محبّت را نسبت به خانوادهٔ من داشته باش تا روزی که خداوند همهٔ دشمنانت را از روی زمین نابود کند.

¹⁶So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the LORD even require it at the hand of David's enemies.

¹⁶ پس یوناتان با خاندان داوود پیمان بست و گفت: 'خداوند انتقام تو را از دشمنانت بگیرد.'»

¹⁷And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

¹⁷ و یوناتان دوباره داوود را قسم داد، این بار به‌خاطر محبّتی بود که با او داشت، زیرا داوود را مانند جان خود دوست می‌داشت.

¹⁸Then Jonathan said to David, To morrow is the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.

¹⁸ یوناتان گفت: «فردا جشن اول ماه است، چون تو بر سر سفره نباشی جایت خالی است.

¹⁹And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.

¹⁹ پس فردا همگی از غیبت تو آگاه می‌شوند. پس مانند دفعهٔ پیش در مخفیگاه خود، در کنار ستون سنگی بمان.

²⁰And I will shoot three arrows on the side thereof, as though I shot at a mark.

²⁰ من می‌آیم و سه تیر به آن طرف، طوری پرتاب می‌کنم که گویا هدفی را نشانه گرفته‌‌ام.

²¹And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; as the LORD liveth.

²¹ آنگاه یک نفر را می‌فرستم که تیرها را پیدا کند. اگر به او بگویم: 'تیرها در این طرف تو هستند، برو آنها را بیاور.' پس بدان که خیر و خیریّت است و مطمئن باش که هیچ خطری متوجّه تو نیست.

²²But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the LORD hath sent thee away.

²² و اگر به او بگویم: 'جلوتر برو و تیرها در آن طرف توست.' به این معنی است که تو باید فوراً از اینجا بروی، زیرا خدا تو را نجات داده است.

²³And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD be between thee and me for ever.

²³ از خدا می‌خواهم که به ما کمک کند تا به عهد و پیمان خود وفادار باشیم، چون او شاهد پیمان ما بوده است.»

²⁴So David hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.

²⁴ پس داوود خود را در مزرعه پنهان کرد. وقتی‌که جشن اول ماه شروع شد، پادشاه بر سفرهٔ غذا حاضر شد.

²⁵And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.

²⁵ او طبق عادت در جای مخصوص خود کنار دیوار نشست. یوناتان مقابل او قرار گرفت و ابنیر پهلوی شائول نشست. امّا جای داوود خالی بود.

²⁶Nevertheless Saul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.

²⁶ شائول در آن روز چیزی نگفت و گمان کرد که حادثه‌‌ای برای داوود رخ داده است. و ممکن است برای شرکت در این مراسم از نظر شرعی پاک نبوده است. بلی، حتماً همین طور است.

²⁷And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said unto Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?

²⁷ امّا فردای آن، یعنی در روز دوم ماه، باز هم جای داوود خالی بود. شائول از پسر خود یوناتان پرسید: «چرا پسر یَسی، سر سفره نیامده است؟ او نه دیروز اینجا بود و نه امروز.»

²⁸And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem:

²⁸ یوناتان جواب داد: «داوود از من خواهش بسیار کرد که به او اجازه بدهم به بیت‌لحم برود.

²⁹And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favor in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king's table.

²⁹ او از من خواهش کرد و گفت: 'اجازه بده که بروم، زیرا خانوادهٔ من می‌خواهد مراسم قربانی را برگزار کند و برادرم به من امر کرده است که در آنجا حاضر باشم. بنابراین اگر به من لطف داری بگذار که بروم و برادرانم را ببینم.' به همین دلیل او نتوانست سر سفره به حضور پادشاه حاضر شود.»

³⁰Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?

³⁰ آنگاه شائول بر یوناتان بسیار خشمگین شد و به او گفت: «ای حرامزاده، من می‌دانم که تو از داوود پشتیبانی می‌کنی، تو با این کار هم آبروی خودت را می‌بری و هم آبروی مادرت را.

³¹For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.

³¹ تا زمانی که پسر یَسی بروی زمین زنده باشد تو به پادشاهی نمی‌رسی. پس برو و او را به حضور من بیاور، او باید کشته شود.»

³²And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?

³² یوناتان از پدر خود پرسید: «چرا او باید کشته شود؟ گناه او چیست؟»

³³And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay David.

³³ آنگاه شائول نیزه‌ای را که در دست داشت به‌ قصد کشتن او به طرف او انداخت. پس یوناتان دانست که پدرش دست از کشتن داوود بر نمی‌دارد.

³⁴So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

³⁴ پس یوناتان با خشم از سر سفره برخاست و در روز دوم ماه هم چیزی نخورد؛ زیرا به‌خاطر رفتار زشت پدرش نسبت به داوود بسیار ناراحت شده بود.

³⁵And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.

³⁵ صبح روز بعد یوناتان با یک پسر جوان به وعده‌گاه خود، در مزرعه پیش داوود رفت.

³⁶And he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

³⁶ به جوان گفت: «برو تیری را که می‌زنم پیدا کن.» آن جوان درحالی‌که می‌دوید، یوناتان تیر را طوری می‌انداخت که از او دورتر می‌افتاد.

³⁷And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?

³⁷ وقتی آن جوان به جایی رسید که تیر یوناتان خورده بود،

³⁸And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

³⁸ یوناتان از پشت سر او صدا کرد: «تیرها به آن طرف افتاد شتاب کن. صبر نکن.» جوان تیرها را جمع کرد و پیش آقای خود آمد.

³⁹But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

³⁹ البتّه آن جوان منظور یوناتان را نفهمید. فقط یوناتان و داوود می‌دانستند که منظور چیست.

⁴⁰And Jonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.

⁴⁰ بعد یوناتان کمان خود را به آن جوان داد و به او گفت که آن را به شهر ببرد.

⁴¹And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.

⁴¹ همین که آن جوان از آنجا رفت، داوود از کنار ستون سنگ برخاست روی به خاک افتاد و سه مرتبه سجده کرد. آن دو یکدیگر را بوسیدند و با هم گریه می‌کردند. غم و غصهٔ داوود بیشتر از یوناتان بود. یوناتان به داوود گفت: «برو به سلامت. ما به نام خداوند، قسم خورده‌‌‌ایم و خداوند، من و تو و فرزندانمان را برای همیشه نسبت به پیمان ما وفادار خواهد ساخت.» بعد هر دو از هم جدا شدند و یوناتان به شهر بازگشت.

⁴²And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.

⁴² یوناتان به داوود گفت: «برو به سلامت. ما به نام خداوند، قسم خورده‌‌‌ایم و خداوند، من و تو و فرزندانمان را برای همیشه نسبت به پیمان ما وفادار خواهد ساخت.» بعد هر دو از هم جدا شدند و یوناتان به شهر بازگشت.
