¹Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?

¹ داوود به نوب پیش اخیملک کاهن رفت. وقتی اخیملک او را دید ترسید و پرسید: «چرا تنها آمدی و کسی همراهت نیست؟»

²And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.

² داوود به اخیملک کاهن جواب داد: «پادشاه مرا برای یک کار خصوصی فرستاده است و به من امر کرده است که دربارهٔ آن‌ چیزی به کسی نگویم. و کسی نداند که چرا به اینجا آمده‌ام. و به خادمان خود گفته‌ام که در کجا منتظر من باشند.

³Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.

³ اکنون خوردنی چه داری؟ پنج تا نان و یا هر چیز دیگری که داری به من بده.»

⁴And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.

⁴ کاهن به داوود گفت: «من نان معمولی ندارم، امّا نان مقدّس موجود است و اگر افراد تو به تازگی با زنی همبستر نشده باشند، می‌توانید از آن بخورید.»

⁵And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.

⁵ داوود جواب داد: «مطمئن باش. افراد من حتّی وقتی به مأموریت‌های معمولی می‌رویم خود را پاک نگاه می‌دارند، پس چقدر بیشتر اکنون که ما به مأموریت مقدّسی می‌رویم.»

⁶So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

⁶ چون نان عادی موجود نبود، کاهن از نان مقدّس، یعنی از نانی که به حضور خداوند تقدیم شده بود به او داد. در همان روز نان تازه و گرم به عوض آن نانها در آنجا گذاشته شده بود.

⁷Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.

⁷ در همان روز تصادفاً یکی از گماشتگان شائول به نام دوآغ اَدومی که سرپرست چوپانهای شائول بود برای مراسم طهارت به آنجا آمده بود.

⁸And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.

⁸ داوود از اخیملک پرسید: «آیا در اینجا نیزه یا شمشیری داری؟ چون این مأموریت خیلی فوری و ضروری بود وقت آن را نداشتم که شمشیر یا اسلحه‌ای با خود بیاورم.»

⁹And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.

⁹ کاهن گفت: «شمشیر جلیات فلسطینی که تو او را در درّهٔ ایلاه کشتی در پارچه‌ای پیچیده و در پشت جامهٔ مخصوص کاهنان گذاشته‌ام. اگر می‌خواهی آن را بردار، زیرا من اسلحهٔ دیگری ندارم.» داوود گفت: «از این چه بهتر! آن را به من بده.»

¹⁰And David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

¹⁰ داوود همان روز از ترس شائول از آنجا هم فرار کرد و پیش اخیش، پادشاه جت رفت.

¹¹And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

¹¹ خادمان اخیش به او گفتند: «آیا این شخص داوود، پادشاه کشورش نیست که زنان رقص‌کنان به استقبالش رفتند و می‌خواندند که: 'شائول هزاران نفر را کشته است و داوود ده‌ها هزاران نفر را؟'»

¹²And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

¹² وقتی داوود سخنان آنها را شنید، از اخیش، پادشاه جت بسیار ترسید.

¹³And he changed his behavior before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.

¹³ پس ناگهان وضع خود را تغییر داده خود را به دیوانگی زد. روی درها خط می‌کشید و آب دهنش از ریشش می‌چکید.

¹⁴Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me?

¹⁴ آنگاه اخیش به خادمان خود گفت: «این شخص دیوانه است. چرا او را پیش من آوردید؟ مگر ما دیوانه کم داریم که این شخص را هم پیش من آوردید؟»

¹⁵Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?

¹⁵ مگر ما دیوانه کم داریم که این شخص را هم پیش من آوردید؟»
