¹And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

¹ بعد از مدّتی پادشاه عمونیان درگذشت و حانون، پسرش جانشین او شد.

²Then said David, I will show kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

² داوود گفت: «چون پدر او ناحاش همیشه با من مهربان و وفادار بود، من هم به پاس خوبی‌های او به پسرش احسان و خوبی می‌کنم.» پس داوود تسلیّت نامه‌ای به دست خادمان خود برای او فرستاد. وقتی خادمان داوود به سرزمین عمونیان آمدند،

³And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

³ مأموران حانون به او گفتند: «این اشخاص را داوود برای تسلیّت و به‌خاطر احترام به پدرت نفرستاده است. اینها برای جاسوسی آمده‌اند تا پیش از آنکه به ما حمله کنند، وضع و حال اینجا را بررسی نمایند.»

⁴Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

⁴ پس حانون امر کرد که نیمی از ریش قاصدان داوود را بتراشند و لباس ایشان را تا قسمت بالای ران پاره کنند و آنها را نیمه برهنه روانه کرد.

⁵When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

⁵ وقتی داوود از ماجرا باخبر شد، برای قاصدان پیام فرستاده گفت که در اریحا بمانند تا ریششان بلند شود، زیرا آنها از وضعی که داشتند خجالت می‌کشیدند.

⁶And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.

⁶ هنگامی‌که عمونیان پی بردند که با کاری که کرده‌اند، خشم و غضب داوود را برانگیخته‌اند، بیست هزار سرباز پیاده را از سوریان بیت رحوب و صوبه، یک‌هزار نفر را از پادشاه معکه و دوازده هزار نفر را از مردم طوب اجیر کردند.

⁷And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

⁷ از طرف دیگر چون به داوود خبر رسید، یوآب را با همه سپاه نیرومند بنی‌اسرائیل برای حمله فرستاد.

⁸And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

⁸ عمونیان برای دفاع از دروازهٔ شهر سنگر گرفتند و سربازان سوریانی‌ بیت رحوب و صوبه و معکه در دشت مستقر شدند.

⁹When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:

⁹ هنگامی یوآب دید که باید در دو جبهه مبارزه کند، گروهی از بهترین رزمندگان سپاه را انتخاب کرده، آنها را برای مقابله با سوریان آماده کرد.

¹⁰And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.

¹⁰ بقیّهٔ قوا را به سرکردگی برادر خود، ابیشای به جنگ عمونیان فرستاد.

¹¹And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.

¹¹ یوآب به برادر خود گفت: «اگر سوریان بر ما چیره شدند به کمک ما بیا و اگر عمونیان بر شما پیروز گردند، ما به کمک شما می‌آییم.

¹²Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.

¹² دلیر و شجاع باشید و برای مردم و شهرهای خدای خود مردانه بجنگید. هرچه خواست خداوند باشد انجام خواهد شد.»

¹³And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.

¹³ پس یوآب و سپاه او بر سوریان حمله کردند و سوریان همگی گریختند.

¹⁴And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

¹⁴ چون عمونیان دیدند که سوریان فرار می‌کنند، آنها هم از ترس ابیشای به داخل شهر گریختند و یوآب بعد از جنگ با عمونیان به اورشلیم برگشت.

¹⁵And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

¹⁵ چون سوریان پی بردند که از دست بنی‌اسرائیل شکست خورده‌اند، دوباره لشکر خود را آماده کردند.

¹⁶And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

¹⁶ هددعزر سوریانی را که در شرق رود فرات بودند، فراخواند. آنگاه همگی به فرماندهی شوبک، سپهسالار هددعزر به حیلام آمدند.

¹⁷And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

¹⁷ داوود باخبر شد، و شخصاً سپاه بنی‌اسرائیل را از رود اردن عبور داده به سوی حیلام رهبری کرد. آنگاه سوریان حمله را شروع کرده، به جنگ پرداختند.

¹⁸And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.

¹⁸ امّا نتوانستند مقاومت کنند و دوباره گریختند. داوود هفتصد نفر ارّابه‌رانهای جنگی و چهل هزار سوار سوریان را همراه با سپهسالارشان کُشت. وقتی پادشاهانی که تابع هددعزر بودند، دیدند که از دست بنی‌اسرائیل شکست خوردند، با بنی‌اسرائیل صلح کردند و تابع آنها شدند و سوریان دیگر از ترس، به کمک عمونیان نرفتند.

¹⁹And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

¹⁹ وقتی پادشاهانی که تابع هددعزر بودند، دیدند که از دست بنی‌اسرائیل شکست خوردند، با بنی‌اسرائیل صلح کردند و تابع آنها شدند و سوریان دیگر از ترس، به کمک عمونیان نرفتند.
