¹And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

¹ خداوند ناتان نبی را پیش داوود فرستاد. ناتان نزد او رفت و این داستان را برای او تعریف کرد: «در شهری دو مرد زندگی می‌کردند. یکی از آنها ثروتمند و دیگری فقیر بود.

²The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds:

² مرد ثروتمند رمه و گلّهٔ فراوان داشت.

³But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

³ امّا آن شخص دیگر، از مال دنیا فقط یک برّهٔ ماده داشت که خریده و پرورش داده بود و مثل حیوان دست‌آموز با او و فرزندانش نَشو و نما می‌کرد. از کاسهٔ او می‌خورد و از جام او می‌نوشید. در آغوش او می‌خوابید و او را مانند دختر خود دوست داشت.

⁴And there came a traveler unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

⁴ روزی یک مسافر به خانهٔ مرد ثروتمند آمد. او دلش نخواست که از گلّه و رمهٔ خود برّه‌ای را بگیرد و برای مهمان غذا تهیّه کند. در عوض رفت و برّهٔ آن مرد فقیر را گرفت و آن را کباب کرد و برای مهمان آورد.»

⁵And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:

⁵ داوود از شنیدن این داستان بسیار خشمگین شد و به ناتان گفت: «به نام خداوند سوگند کسی‌که این کار را کرد، سزاوار مرگ است.

⁶And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

⁶ چون او با بی‌رحمی برّهٔ آن مرد فقیر را گرفت، او باید چهار برابر تاوان بدهد.»

⁷And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

⁷ ناتان به داوود گفت: «تو همان شخص هستی و خداوند خدای بنی‌اسرائیل چنین می‌فرماید: من تو را به عنوان پادشاه بنی‌اسرائیل برگزیدم. از دست شائول تو را نجات دادم.

⁸And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.

⁸ کاخ شائول را به تو بخشیدم و زنهای او را به آغوش تو دادم. تخت سلطنت اسرائیل و یهودا را به تو عطا کردم. اگر همهٔ اینها کم بود، من برایت زیادتر می‌دادم.

⁹Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

⁹ پس چرا به فرمانهای خدا بی‌احترامی نمودی؟ و کاری کردی که در نظر من ناپسند بود؟ اوریا را با شمشیر عمونیان به قتل رساندی و زن او را تصاحب کردی.

¹⁰Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

¹⁰ بنابراین شمشیر هرگز از خانواده‌ات دور نخواهد بود. چرا تو زن اوریا را گرفتی که زن تو بشود؟ من از این عمل تو بسیار ناراضی هستم.»

¹¹Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

¹¹ خداوند چنین می‌گوید: «من از خانوادهٔ خودت کسی را بلای جانت می‌گردانم. و زنهایت را می‌گیرم و به مردم دیگر می‌دهم. و آنها با زنهایت در برابر چشم همه همبستر می‌شوند.

¹²For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

¹² تو آن کار را در خفا کردی. امّا کاری که من با تو می‌کنم در روز روشن و در حضور تمام مردم اسرائیل خواهد بود.»

¹³And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

¹³ داوود به ناتان گفت: «من در برابر خداوند گناه کرده‌ام.» ناتان گفت: «خداوند گناهت را بخشید و به‌خاطر گناهی که کردی، نمی‌میری.

¹⁴Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

¹⁴ چون با این کارِ زشت خود باعث شده‌ای که دشمنان خداوند کفر بگویند، بنابراین فرزند تو می‌میرد.»

¹⁵And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.

¹⁵ ناتان این را گفت و به خانهٔ خود بازگشت. خداوند کودکی را که بیوهٔ اوریا برای داوود به دنیا آورده بود، بیمار کرد.

¹⁶David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.

¹⁶ داوود از خداوند خواهش کرد که او را شفا بدهد. روزه گرفت و تمام شب بر وی زمین خوابید.

¹⁷And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

¹⁷ بزرگان قوم و خانواده‌اش آمدند و از او خواهش کردند که برخیزد و با آنها نان بخورد، امّا او قبول نکرد.

¹⁸And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?

¹⁸ در روز هفتم کودک مرد و خادمان داوود می‌ترسیدند که این خبر را به او بدهند. آنها گفتند: «زمانی که کودک هنوز زنده بود داوود به سخنان ما پاسخ نمی‌داد، ما چگونه می‌توانیم این خبر را به او بدهیم؟ زیرا ممکن است به خود صدمه‌ای برساند.»

¹⁹But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.

¹⁹ امّا وقتی داوود دید که خادمانش آهسته صحبت می‌کنند، فهمید که فرزندش مرده است. از آنها پرسید: «آیا کودک مرده است؟» آنها جواب دادند: «بلی، مرده است.»

²⁰Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.

²⁰ آنگاه داوود از روی زمین برخاست. حمام کرد، عطر زد و لباس پاک پوشید. بعد برای عبادت به معبد خداوند رفت. از آنجا به خانه آمد و گفت که برایش غذا بیاورند. غذا را آوردند پیش رویش گذاشتند و او خورد.

²¹Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.

²¹ خادمانش تعجّب کرده پرسیدند: «ما نمی‌فهمیم! وقتی‌که بچّه زنده بود، تو روزه گرفتی و گریه کردی. حالا که او مرده است آمدی و نان می‌خوری.»

²²And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?

²² داوود گفت: «وقتی‌که کودک هنوز زنده بود، روزه گرفتم و گریه کردم، زیرا امیدوار بودم که شاید خداوند بر من رحم کند و او شفا یابد.

²³But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

²³ امّا حالا که او مرده است، چرا روزه بگیرم؟ آیا امکان دارد که او را باز آورم؟ من پیش او می‌روم، ولی او پیش من باز نمی‌گردد.»

²⁴And David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him.

²⁴ سپس داوود زن خود، بتشبع را تسلّی داد و با او همبستر شد. بعد از مدّتی بتشبع پسری به دنیا آورد و او را سلیمان نامید. خداوند او را دوست داشت

²⁵And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.

²⁵ و پیامی به وسیلهٔ ناتان نبی برای داوود فرستاد تا سلیمان را یدیدیا یعنی محبوب خدا لقب دهد.

²⁶And Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

²⁶ در این زمان یوآب با عمونیان جنگید و می‌خواست پایتخت ایشان را تصرّف کند

²⁷And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah, and have taken the city of waters.

²⁷ و پیامی برای داوود فرستاده گفت: «من با عمونیان جنگیدم و شهر ربه را که ذخیرهٔ آب آنهاست، تصرّف کردم.

²⁸Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.

²⁸ پس حالا بقیّهٔ سپاه را با خود بیاور و کار را تمام کن تا تسخیر و پیروزی به نام تو ختم شود نه به نام من.»

²⁹And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.

²⁹ پس داوود همهٔ سپاه را جمع کرده به ربه رفت، جنگید و آن را بکلّی تصرّف کرد.

³⁰And he took their king's crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance.

³⁰ تاج مِلکُوم خدای عمونیان را که وزن آن سی و چهار کیلو طلای خالص بود و دارای جواهر بود، از سرش گرفت و بر سر خود گذاشت و غنیمت بسیار زیاد و گرانبهایی را با خود برد. مردم شهر را به بردگی گرفت تا با ارّه، کلنگ و تبر کار کنند و گروهی را در کوره‌های آجرپزی به کار گماشت. به همین ترتیب با همهٔ شهرهای عمونیان رفتار کرد. سپس داوود و سپاهش به اورشلیم بازگشتند.

³¹And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick-kiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.

³¹ مردم شهر را به بردگی گرفت تا با ارّه، کلنگ و تبر کار کنند و گروهی را در کوره‌های آجرپزی به کار گماشت. به همین ترتیب با همهٔ شهرهای عمونیان رفتار کرد. سپس داوود و سپاهش به اورشلیم بازگشتند.
