¹Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.

¹ در رؤیایی که خداوند متعال به من نشان داد دیدم که بعد از اینکه محصول اول غلّه که سهم پادشاه بود برداشته شده و محصول دوم تازه سبز شده بود، خداوند انبوهی از ملخها را به وجود آورد.

²And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

² بعد از آنکه ملخها همهٔ گیاهان سبز زمین را خوردند، من به خداوند گفتم: «ای خداوند متعال، از حضور تو استدعا می‌کنم که قومت را ببخشی. آنها قوم ضعیف و کوچک هستند و نمی‌توانند در برابر این مصیبت طاقت بیاورند.»

³The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.

³ خداوند هم رحم کرد و فرمود: «این کار را نمی‌کنم.»

⁴Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.

⁴ خداوند در رؤیای دیگری، آتش بزرگی را که برای مجازات مردم آماده کرده بود به من نشان داد. آن آتش آبهای عمیق زمین را بلعید و تمام گیاهان را سوزانید.

⁵Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.

⁵ من گفتم: «خداوندا، التماس می‌کنم از این کار منصرف شو، زیرا قوم اسرائیل کوچک و ضعیف است و طاقت این بلا را ندارد.»

⁶The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.

⁶ پس خداوند فرمود: «چنین نیز روی نخواهد داد.»

⁷Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the LORD stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.

⁷ بعد در رؤیای دیگری دیدم که خداوند در کنار دیوار راستی که با شاغول بنا شده بود ایستاده و شاغولی در دست داشت.

⁸And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the LORD, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:

⁸ از من پرسید: «عاموس، چه می‌بینی؟» من جواب دادم: «یک شاغول.» خداوند فرمود: «با این شاغول می‌خواهم نشان بدهم که قوم من مثل این دیوار راست نیست، بنابراین تصمیم گرفته‌ام که آنها را مجازات کنم و از تصمیم خود منصرف نخواهم شد.

⁹And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

⁹ مکانهای مقدّس فرزندان اسحاق را خراب و پرستشگاههای بالای تپّه‌های اسرائیل را ویران می‌کنم و خاندان یربعام را با شمشیر نابود می‌سازم.»

¹⁰Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.

¹⁰ آنگاه امصیا کاهن بیت‌ئیل، به یربعام پادشاه اسرائیل، خبر داد و گفت: «عاموس در بین قوم اسرائیل فتنه برانگیخته و علیه تو توطئه چیده است و سخنان او کشور ما را نابود خواهد ساخت.

¹¹For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.

¹¹ زیرا او می‌گوید که تو با شمشیر کشته خواهی شد و قوم اسرائیل از سرزمین‌شان تبعید خواهند شد به اسارت برده می‌شوند.»

¹²Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:

¹² امصیا به عاموس گفت: «ای رائی، از این کشور خارج شو. به سرزمین یهودا برو و در آنجا به وسیلهٔ موعظه پول به دست آور و نان بخور.

¹³But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court.

¹³ دیگر هرگز در بیت‌ئیل موعظه نکن، زیرا اینجا محل عبادت پادشاه و پرستشگاه ملّی ما می‌باشد.»

¹⁴Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:

¹⁴ عاموس جواب داد: «من پسر نبی نیستم و به‌خاطر نبوّت دستمزد نمی‌گیرم. وظیفهٔ من چوپانی و میوه‌چینی است.

¹⁵And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

¹⁵ امّا خداوند مرا از کار چوپانی گرفت و فرمود: 'برو برای قوم اسرائیل موعظه کن.'

¹⁶Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.

¹⁶ حالا تو می‌گویی که برضد قوم اسرائیل و خانهٔ اسحاق موعظه نکنم، پس ای امصیا، به کلام خداوند گوش بده که به تو می‌فرماید: 'زن تو در این شهر فاحشه می‌شود، فرزندانت در جنگ به قتل می‌رسند و سرزمینت تقسیم خواهد شد و به دیگران تعلّق می‌گیرد. خودت هم در یک کشور بیگانه می‌میری و قوم اسرائیل در حقیقت از وطن خود به اسارت برده می‌شوند.'»

¹⁷Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.

¹⁷ 'زن تو در این شهر فاحشه می‌شود، فرزندانت در جنگ به قتل می‌رسند و سرزمینت تقسیم خواهد شد و به دیگران تعلّق می‌گیرد. خودت هم در یک کشور بیگانه می‌میری و قوم اسرائیل در حقیقت از وطن خود به اسارت برده می‌شوند.'»
