¹The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

¹ نویسندهٔ این کتاب، پسر داوود، پادشاه حکیم اورشلیم می‌باشد.

²Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

² او می‌گوید: بیهودگی است! بیهودگی است! همه‌چیز بیهوده است!

³What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

³ از این‌همه رنج و زحمتی که انسان در روی زمین می‌کشد چه فایده‌ای می‌بیند؟

⁴One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

⁴ یک نسل می‌آید و نسل دیگری می‌رود، امّا دنیا همیشه به حال خود باقی می‌ماند.

⁵The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

⁵ آفتاب طلوع و غروب می‌کند و باز به جایی می‌شتابد که دوباره باید از آنجا طلوع کند.

⁶The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

⁶ باد به سمت جنوب و شمال می‌وزد و به هر سو می‌چرخد و باز به مدار خود برمی‌گردد.

⁷All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.

⁷ همهٔ رودخانه‌ها به دریا می‌ریزند، امّا دریا پُر نمی‌شود. آب به سرچشمه‌ای که رودها از آن جاری می‌شود، بازمی‌گردد و چرخش دوباره آغاز می‌گردد.

⁸All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

⁸ همه‌چیز آن‌قدر خسته کننده است که زبان از بیان آن عاجز است. هرقدر ببینیم و هرقدر بشنویم، بازهم سیر نمی‌شویم.

⁹The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

⁹ در حقیقت تاریخ تکرار می‌شود، یعنی آنچه را که می‌بینیم، بارها در گذشته اتّفاق افتاده است. در جهان هیچ چیز تازه‌ای دیده نمی‌شود.

¹⁰Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

¹⁰ کدام چیز تازه‌ای را می‌توانید نشان بدهید؟ هر چیزی قبلاً و پیش از آنکه ما به دنیا بیاییم وجود داشته است.

¹¹There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

¹¹ یادی از گذشتگان نیست و آیندگان نیز از نسلهای پیشین یادی نخواهند کرد.

¹²I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

¹² من حکیم هستم و در اورشلیم بر اسرائیل سلطنت می‌کردم.

¹³And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

¹³ تصمیم گرفتم تا دربارهٔ هر چیز این دنیا با حکمت مطالعه و تحقیق کنم. خدا کارهای سخت و دشواری را به عهدهٔ ما گذاشته است!

¹⁴I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

¹⁴ هر کاری را در این دنیا تجربه کردم و به این نتیجه رسیدم که همهٔ آنها بیهوده و به دنبال باد دویدن است.

¹⁵That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

¹⁵ چیز کج را نمی‌توان راست کرد و چیزی را که وجود نداشته باشد، نمی‌توان شمرد.

¹⁶I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

¹⁶ به خود گفتم: «من حکمت و معرفت زیادی اندوختم و بیشتر از همهٔ کسانی‌که قبل از من در اورشلیم حکومت می‌کردند، علم و دانش کسب کردم.»

¹⁷And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

¹⁷ تصمیم گرفتم که فرق بین حکمت و جهالت را بدانم، امّا پی بردم که این کار هم بیهوده و مانند دنبال باد دویدن است، زیرا زیادی حکمت باعث غم می‌شود و هر که به دانش خود بیافزاید، اندوه خود را زیاد می‌کند.

¹⁸For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

¹⁸ زیرا زیادی حکمت باعث غم می‌شود و هر که به دانش خود بیافزاید، اندوه خود را زیاد می‌کند.
