¹Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour.

¹ همان‌طور که مگسهای مُرده شیشه عطر را متعفّن می‌سازند، یک عمل کوچک احمقانه نیز می‌تواند حکمت و عزّت یک شخص را از بین ببرد.

²A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.

² دل مرد دانا او را مایل به کارهای نیک می‌سازد، امّا دل یک شخص احمق او را به کارهای بد وادار می‌سازد.

³Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool.

³ آدم احمق حتّی در راه رفتن هم حماقت خود را به هرکس نشان می‌دهد.

⁴If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences.

⁴ وقتی رئیس شما بر شما خشمگین می‌شود، کار خود را ترک نکنید. اگر در برابر خشم او خونسرد باشید، بسیاری از مشکلات حل می‌شوند.

⁵There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

⁵ بدی دیگر هم در این جهان دیدم که در اثر اشتباه حاکمان به وجود می‌آید.

⁶Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.

⁶ به اشخاص نادان مقام و منصب عالی داده می‌شود، امّا به ثروتمندان اهمیّتی نمی‌دهند.

⁷I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

⁷ غلامان را دیدم که بر اسب سوار هستند و اشخاص نجیب و بزرگ مثل غلامان پیاده می‌روند.

⁸He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.

⁸ کسی‌که چاه می‌کند خودش در آن می‌افتد، و آن که دیوار را سوراخ می‌کند مار او را می‌گزد.

⁹Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.

⁹ کسی‌که در معدنِ سنگ کار می‌کند با سنگ زخمی می‌شود و کسی‌که درختی را می‌برد، به وسیلهٔ درخت زخمی می‌شود.

¹⁰If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.

¹⁰ اگر لبهٔ تبر تیز نباشد قوّت بیشتری لازم دارد و شخص عاقل پیش از شروع کار لبهٔ آن را تیز می‌کند.

¹¹Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.

¹¹ قبل از اینکه مار کسی را بگزد، باید آن را افسون کرد.

¹²The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

¹² کلام شخص دانا فیض بخش است، امّا سخنان آدم نادان خودش را تباه می‌کند.

¹³The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

¹³ ابتدای کلامش حماقت است و پایان آن دیوانگی محض.

¹⁴A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

¹⁴ شخص احمق زیاد حرف می‌زند. هیچ‌کس نمی‌داند که بعداً چه اتّفاقی خواهد افتاد و هیچ‌کس نمی‌تواند بگوید بعد از مرگ چه خواهد شد.

¹⁵The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.

¹⁵ کار آدم نادان را فرسوده می‌کند، به طوری که حتّی نمی‌تواند راه خانهٔ خود را پیدا کند.

¹⁶Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!

¹⁶ افسوس به حال کشوری که پادشاه آن اختیاری از خود نداشته باشد و رهبرانش سحرگاهان بخورند و بنوشند و مست شوند!

¹⁷Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

¹⁷ خوشا به حال سرزمینی که پادشاهش نجیب‌زاده باشد و رهبران آن به موقع و به اندازه بخورند و بنوشند و مست نکنند!

¹⁸By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.

¹⁸ در اثر تنبلی سقف خانه چِکه می‌کند و فرو می‌ریزد.

¹⁹A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.

¹⁹ جشن خوشی می‌آورد و شراب سرمستی، امّا بدون پول هیچ‌کدام را نمی‌توانی داشته باشی. به پادشاه حتّی در فکر خود هم دشنام ندهید و حتّی در بستر خود هم شخص ثروتمند را لعنت نکنید، زیرا ممکن است پرنده‌ای سخنان تو را به گوش آنها برساند.

²⁰Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.

²⁰ به پادشاه حتّی در فکر خود هم دشنام ندهید و حتّی در بستر خود هم شخص ثروتمند را لعنت نکنید، زیرا ممکن است پرنده‌ای سخنان تو را به گوش آنها برساند.
