¹For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.

¹ پس از مطالعه و تحقیقات زیاد پی بردم که کارهای مردم عادل و حکیم همه در دست خداست، خواه محبّت و خواه نفرت، امّا انسان این را نمی‌داند.

²All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

² همه با این حوادث روبه‌رو می‌شوند، فرقی نمی‌کند که شخص درستکار باشد یا بدکار، خوب باشد یا بد، پاک باشد یا ناپاک، قربانی کند یا نکند، نیک باشد یا گناهکار، قسم بخورد یا نخورد.

³This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

³ از تمام حوادثی که در جهان رخ می‌دهند بدترین آنها این است که این اتّفاقات برای همه رخ می‌دهد. انسان تا روزی که زنده است از شرارت و دیوانگی دست نمی‌کشد.

⁴For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

⁴ امّا برای هرکسی که زنده است امیدی باقی است. سگ زنده بهتر از شیر مُرده است.

⁵For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

⁵ کسی‌که زنده است، می‌داند که یک وقت می‌میرد، امّا مُرده‌‌‌ها هیچ چیز نمی‌دانند. مُرده‌‌‌ها پاداش نمی‌گیرند و حتّی یاد آنها از خاطره‌ها فراموش می‌شود.

⁶Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.

⁶ دوستی، دشمنی و احساساتشان همگی با خودشان از بین می‌روند و دیگر در آنچه که در این جهان رخ می‌دهد، سهمی نخواهند داشت.

⁷Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.

⁷ پس بروید نان خود را با لذّت بخورید و شرابتان را با دل‌خوشی بنوشید و شاد باشید، زیرا این خواست خداست.

⁸Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

⁸ تا می‌توانید از زندگی لذّت ببرید و خوش و خندان باشید.

⁹Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

⁹ در تمام روزهای بیهوده این زندگی که خدا در دنیا به شما داده است با زنی که دوستش می‌داری خوش بگذران، زیرا تنها چیزی که از این‌همه زحمت نصیب تو می‌شود، همین است.

¹⁰Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

¹⁰ هر کاری که می‌کنید آن را به خوبی انجام بدهید، زیرا در دنیای مردگان، که روزی شما هم به آنجا می‌‌روید، نه کار است، نه اندیشه، نه علم و نه حکمت.

¹¹I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

¹¹ در این دنیا متوجّه مطلب دیگری هم شدم و آن این است که تیزترین دونده همیشه در مسابقه برنده نمی‌شود و شجاع‌ترین سرباز همیشه در جنگ پیروز نمی‌گردد. مردم دانا هم گاهی گرسنه می‌مانند. اشخاص با هوش همیشه پولدار و ثروتمند نمی‌شوند و مردان با تجربه و کاردان نیز همیشه به جاه و مقام نمی‌رسند. شانس خوب و بد به سراغ همه می‌آید.

¹²For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

¹² کسی نمی‌داند که چه بر سرش می‌آید. همان‌گونه که ماهی ناگهان در تور گرفتار می‌شود و پرنده در دام می‌افتد، انسان هم در وقتی‌که انتظارش را ندارد، گرفتار بلای ناگهانی می‌گردد.

¹³This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:

¹³ در این دنیا یک نمونهٔ حکمت را دیدم که برای من بسیار مهم بود.

¹⁴There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:

¹⁴ در یک شهر کوچک، مردم کمی زندگی می‌کردند. پادشاه بزرگی به آن شهر حمله کرد و آن را محاصره کرد و قوای او به دور آن سنگر گرفتند.

¹⁵Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.

¹⁵ شخصی فقیر و بینوا در آن شهر سکونت داشت. او در عین حال مرد دانا و عاقلی بود که می‌توانست آن شهر را نجات بدهد، امّا کسی به فکر او نبود.

¹⁶Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

¹⁶ من همیشه به این عقیده بودم که حکمت بهتر از قدرت است، امّا دیدم که اگر یک شخص دانا و عاقل فقیر باشد، مردم او را خوار شمرده به حرف او توجّهی نمی‌کنند.

¹⁷The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

¹⁷ گوش دادن به سخنان آرام یک شخص دانا بهتر است از شنیدن فریاد رهبر احمقان. حکمت بهتر از هر سلاح جنگی است، امّا کار یک احمق خرابی‌های زیادی به بار می‌آورد.

¹⁸Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
