¹When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.

¹ در گذشته، وقتی طایفهٔ افرایم سخن می‌گفت، طایفه‌های دیگر اسرائیل از ترس می‌لرزیدند و با احترام به افرایم نگاه می‌کردند، امّا حالا به‌خاطر پرستش بت بعل محکوم به مرگ شده است.

²And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.

² آن مردم بیشتر از پیش گناه می‌کنند و از نقرهٔ خود بُتهای ریختگی می‌سازند، بُتهایی که نتیجهٔ فکر و ساختهٔ دست بشر است و می‌گویند: «برای این بُتها قربانی کنید و گوساله‌ها را ببوسید!»

³Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

³ بنابراین آنها مثل غبار و شبنم صبحگاهی بزودی محو می‌شوند. مانند کاه که از خرمن جدا می‌شود و همچون دود که از روزن برمی‌آید، بزودی نابود می‌گردند.

⁴Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.

⁴ خداوند می‌فرماید: «من خداوند، خدای شما هستم، همان خدایی که شما را از مصر بیرون آورد. به غیراز من خدای دیگری ندارید و من یگانه نجات‌دهندهٔ شما هستم.

⁵I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.

⁵ من بودم که در بیابان خشک و بی‌آب به شما خوراک دادم.

⁶According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.

⁶ امّا وقتی خوردید و شکمتان سیر شد، مغرور شدید و مرا فراموش کردید.

⁷Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them:

⁷ پس من مثل شیری بر شما هجوم می‌آورم و مانند پلنگی بر سر راهتان در کمین می‌نشینم.

⁸I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.

⁸ همچون خرسی که بچّه‌هایش را ربوده باشند، بر شما حمله خواهم کرد و سینهٔ شما را خواهم درید و آنگاه همچون شیر، شما را خواهم بلعید و چون حیوانات وحشی، شما را پاره خواهم کرد.

⁹O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.

⁹ «ای اسرائیل، اگر تو را از بین ببرم، آیا کسی می‌تواند به تو کمک کند؟

¹⁰I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?

¹⁰ تو خواستی که پادشاه و رهبرانی داشته باشی، پس حالا آنها کجا هستند؟ آیا آنها می‌توانند تو را نجات بدهند؟

¹¹I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.

¹¹ در خشم خود به تو پادشاه دادم و در غصب خود او را پس گرفتم.

¹²The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid.

¹² «خطاها و گناهان افرایم ثبت شده و همه در دفتر محفوظ می‌باشند.

¹³The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.

¹³ او فرصتی برای زنده ماندن دارد، ولی مانند کودکِ لجوج و نادانی است که نمی‌خواهد از رحم مادر خود بیرون بیاید.

¹⁴I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

¹⁴ آیا او را از دنیای مردگان و از چنگال مرگ نجات بدهم؟ ای مرگ بلاهایت را نشان بده و ای دنیای مردگان نابودی و هلاکت را بیاور، زیرا دیگر رحم نمی‌کنم.

¹⁵Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.

¹⁵ هرچند اسرائیل در بین علفها ثمر بیاورد، امّا من باد سوزان شرقی را از بیابان می‌فرستم تا منابع آب و چشمه‌هایش را خشک سازد و ثروت و اشیای نفیس و گرانبهایش را به تاراج ببرد. سامره باید سزای گناهان خود را ببیند، زیرا در مقابل من سرکشی کرده است. اهالی آن با دَم شمشیر به قتل می‌رسند، اطفال آنها تکه‌تکه و شکم زنان حامله‌‌شان دریده می‌شود.»

¹⁶Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.

¹⁶ سامره باید سزای گناهان خود را ببیند، زیرا در مقابل من سرکشی کرده است. اهالی آن با دَم شمشیر به قتل می‌رسند، اطفال آنها تکه‌تکه و شکم زنان حامله‌‌شان دریده می‌شود.»
