¹Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!

¹ وای بر پادشاهی شمالی اسرائیل! جلال او مثل تاجهای گُلی که بر سر رهبران مست آن است، محو و نابود خواهد شد. به سرهای مغرورشان عطرهای خالص زده‌اند، امّا آنها در حال مستی کامل مثل مردگان افتاده‌اند.

²Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.

² خداوند آدمی قوی و زورمند و آماده برای حمله در اختیار دارد. کسی‌که مثل توفان تگرگ، مانند باران سیل‌آسا، و مثل سیلی خروشان و مخرّب، تمام این سرزمین را خواهد پوشانید.

³The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:

³ غرور آن رهبران مست، زیر پا لِه خواهد شد.

⁴And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.

⁴ جلال زودگذر رهبران مغرور مثل انجیرهای زودرس است که به محض رسیدن، آنها را می‌چینند و می‌خورند و ناپدید می‌شوند.

⁵In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people,

⁵ روزی می‌آید که خداوند متعال مانند تاج گُلی بر سر بازماندگان قوم خودش خواهد بود.

⁶And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.

⁶ او به داورانی که زنده مانده‌اند، حس عدالت‌خواهی و به کسانی‌که از دروازه‌های شهر در برابر حملات دفاع می‌کنند، شهامت خواهد بخشید.

⁷But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

⁷ حتّی انبیا و کاهنان آن‌قدر مست‌اند که تلو‌تلو می‌خورند. آنها آن‌قدر شراب و مشروبات قوی نوشیده‌اند که افتان و خیزان و گیج‌اند. انبیا آن‌قدر مست‌اند که رؤیاهایی را که خدا به آنها می‌دهد، درک نمی‌کنند و کاهنان هم آن‌قدر مست‌اند که نمی‌توانند در مورد ادّعای وی قضاوت کنند.

⁸For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.

⁸ سفره‌ای که بر سر آن نشسته‌اند با استفراغ پوشیده شده و جای پاکی در آن نمانده است.

⁹Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

⁹ آنها از من شکایت می‌کنند و می‌گویند: «این شخص فکر می‌کند به چه کسی تعلیم می‌دهد؟ چه کسی به پیامهای او احتیاج دارد؟ آنها فقط برای اطفالی که تازه از شیر گرفته شده‌اند، مفید هستند.

¹⁰For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

¹⁰ او می‌کوشد ما را اول با حروف، بعد با سطور و بالاخره با دروس، یکی بعد از دیگری آموزش دهد.»

¹¹For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.

¹¹ اگر شما به من گوش ندهید، آنگاه خدا از بیگانگانی که با لهجه‌های عجیب صحبت می‌کنند، استفاده خواهد کرد تا به شما بیاموزند.

¹²To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

¹² او برای شما صلح و آرامش آورد، امّا شما نخواستید به او گوش بدهید.

¹³But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

¹³ به همین دلیل است که خداوند می‌خواهد حرفی بعد از حرفی دیگر، سطری بعد از سطری دیگر، و درسی بعد از درسی دیگر به شما بیاموزد. شما زخمی می‌شوید، به دام می‌افتید و به اسارت برده خواهید شد.

¹⁴Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.

¹⁴ شما رهبران مغروری که بر اورشلیم و بر این مردم حکومت می‌کنید، به آنچه خداوند می‌گوید گوش دهید.

¹⁵Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

¹⁵ شما با افتخار می‌گویید که با مرگ پیمان بسته‌اید و با دنیای مردگان به توافق رسیده‌اید. شما مطمئن هستید که وقتی بلایی برسد، شما در امان خواهید بود، چون شما برای ایمنی به دروغها و فریب‌های خود مُتّکی هستید.

¹⁶Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

¹⁶ اکنون این است آنچه خداوند متعال می‌گوید: «من در صهیون بنیادی ثابت و مستحکم می‌گذارم. سنگ زاویهٔ سختی در میان آن قرار می‌دهم که بر روی آن این کلمات نوشته شده است: 'ایمانی که استوار است صبور نیز می‌باشد.'

¹⁷Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

¹⁷ عدالت، ریسمان اندازه‌گیری آن بنیاد و صداقت شاغول آن خواهد بود.» توفان تگرگ تمام دروغهایی را که به آنها پناه برده‌اید می‌شوید و می‌برد، و سیلابها مکانهای امن شما را ویران خواهد کرد.

¹⁸And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

¹⁸ پیمانی که با مرگ بسته‌اید فسخ خواهد شد، و توافق شما با دنیای مردگان باطل می‌شود. وقتی بلا نازل شود شما مغلوب آن خواهید شد.

¹⁹From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

¹⁹ ضربات آن پی‌درپی و روزهای متمادی ادامه خواهد داشت. شما باید شب و روز متحمّل آن شوید. هر پیام تازه‌ای از جانب خداوند، حاوی وحشت تازه‌ای است.

²⁰For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.

²⁰ حالت شما مانند حالت کسی است که در این ضرب‌المثل آمده است: کسی در تخت‌خوابی کوتاه خوابیده که نمی‌تواند پاهای خود را دراز کند و لحافش آن‌قدر باریک است که نمی‌‌تواند آن را دور خود بپیچد‌.

²¹For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

²¹ خداوند برای اجرای نیّات و خواسته‌هایش -‌هرچند عجیب به‌نظر می‌رسد- همان‌طور که در کوه فراصیم و در دشت جبعون جنگید، باز هم می‌جنگد. او کار خود و کارهای اسرارآمیز خویش را به کمال خواهد رسانید.

²²Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.

²² به هشداری که به شما می‌دهم نخندید وگرنه فرار شما از این هم مشکل‌تر خواهد شد. من داوری خداوند، خدای متعال را برای خرابی تمام این سرزمین شنیده‌ام.

²³Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.

²³ به آنچه می‌گویم گوش دهید، و به سخنان من توجّه کنید.

²⁴Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?

²⁴ هیچ زارعی زمین خود را مرتّب شخم نمی‌زند و آن را آمادهٔ کشت نمی‌کند.

²⁵When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place?

²⁵ یکبار که زمینی را آماده کرد آن وقت تخم سبزیجاتی مثل شوید و زیره در آن می‌کارد. او همچنین ردیفهایی از گندم و جو، و در کنار‌های مزرعه، غلاّت دیگری خواهد داشت.

²⁶For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.

²⁶ زارع خوب می‌داند که چه‌کار می‌کند، چون خداوند آن را به او آموخته است.

²⁷For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.

²⁷ او هیچ‌وقت از چوبهای سنگین برای کوبیدن و جدا کردن تخم شوید و زیره استفاده نمی‌کند. برعکس برای این کار از چوبهای سبک و مناسب استفاده می‌کند.

²⁸Bread corn is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen.

²⁸ او گندم را با کوبیدن‌های بی‌پایان خُرد نمی‌کند و او می‌داند چقدر از خرمنکوب استفاده کند بدون آنکه گندمها را خُرد کند. تمام این حکمت از جانب خداوند متعال است. برنامه‌های خداوند همه از روی حکمت است و همیشه با موفقیّت همراه است.

²⁹This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
