¹And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.

¹ وقتی حزقیای پادشاه این خبر را شنید، لباس خود را درید، پلاسی بر تن کرد و به خانهٔ خداوند رفت.

²And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

² او الیاقیم رئیس دربار، شبنا منشی دربار و کاهنان ارشد را که همه پلاس پوشیده بودند، نزد اشعیا پسر آموص فرستاد.

³And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.

³ این است پیامی که پادشاه خواست آنها به اشعیا بدهند: «امروز روز مصیبت و سختی است. ما مجازات می‌شویم و شرمسار هستیم. ما مانند زنی در حال زایمان هستیم ولی آن‌قدر ضعیفیم که نمی‌توانیم بچّه را به دنیا بیاوریم.

⁴It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.

⁴ امپراتور آشور سفیر خود را فرستاده تا به خدای زنده توهین کند. کاش خداوند، خدای تو این توهین‌ها را می‌شنید و کسانی را که چنین چیزهایی گفته‌اند، مجازات می‌کرد. پس برای بازماندگان قوم ما به حضور خدا دعا کن.»

⁵So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

⁵ وقتی اشعیا پیام حزقیای پادشاه را دریافت کرد،

⁶And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

⁶ در پاسخ چنین گفت: «خداوند به تو می‌گوید نگذار مردمان آشور، با ادّعاهای خود که خداوند نمی‌تواند نجات دهد، تو را بترسانند.

⁷Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

⁷ خداوند باعث خواهد شد که امپراتور شایعه‌ای بشنود و به کشورش بازگردد و در آنجا کشته شود.»

⁸So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

⁸ سفیر آشور متوجّه شد که امپراتور، لاکیش را ترک کرده و برای جنگ به لبنه که در همان نزدیکی‌ها بود رفته است، پس سفیر برای مشورت با او به آنجا رفت.

⁹And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,

⁹ به سپاه آشور خبر رسید که نیروهای مصر به فرماندهی ترهافه -‌پادشاه حبشه- برای حمله به آنها حرکت کرده است. وقتی این خبر به امپراتور رسید، او نامه‌ای به حزقیا

¹⁰Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

¹⁰ پادشاه یهودا فرستاد و گفت: «خدایی که به او اعتماد کرده‌‌ای، به تو گفته است که به دست من نخواهی افتاد. امّا فریب آن را نخور.

¹¹Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?

¹¹ تو شنیده‌ای که امپراتور آشور با کشورهایی که می‌خواهد ویران کند، چگونه رفتار می‌کند. آیا فکر می‌کنی که می‌توانی از این سرنوشت بگریزی؟

¹²Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar?

¹² اجداد من تمام شهرهای جوزان، حاران و رضف را ویران کردند و تمام مردم بیت‌عدن را که در تِلسار زندگی می‌کردند، کشتند و هیچ‌یک از خدایانشان نتوانست آنها را نجات دهد.

¹³Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?

¹³ پادشاهان شهرهای حمات، ارفاد، سفروایم، هِنا و عِوا کجا هستند؟»

¹⁴And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.

¹⁴ حزقیای پادشاه نامه را از قاصدان گرفت و آن را خواند. سپس به معبد بزرگ رفت و نامه را در آنجا در حضور خداوند گذاشت.

¹⁵And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying,

¹⁵ او دعا کرد و گفت:

¹⁶O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.

¹⁶ «ای خداوند متعال، خدای اسرائیل که فراتر از همهٔ فرشتگان نگهبان نشسته‌ای، تو تنها خدایی هستی که بر تمام کشورهای روی زمین حکومت می‌کنی. تو آسمان و زمین را آفریدی.

¹⁷Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.

¹⁷ اکنون ای خداوند، گوش بده و به آنچه برما می‌گذرد نظر بیافکن، و به آنچه سنحاریب برای اهانت به تو، خدای زنده می‌گوید، گوش فرا ده.

¹⁸Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,

¹⁸ ای خداوند، ما همه می‌دانیم که امپراتوران آشور ملّتهای زیادی را از بین بردند و سرزمینهایشان را ویران کردند.

¹⁹And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.

¹⁹ و خدایان آنها را -‌که در حقیقت خدا نبودند و فقط شمایلی چوبی و سنگی و ساخته شده به دست انسان بودند- سوزانیدند.

²⁰Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.

²⁰ اکنون ای خداوند خدای ما، ما را از دست آشور نجات بده تا تمام ملّتهای جهان بدانند که تو تنها خدا هستی.»

²¹Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:

²¹ آنگاه اشعیا پیامی برای حزقیای پادشاه فرستاد و به او گفت در پاسخ به دعای پادشاه،

²²This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

²² خداوند گفته است: «ای سنحاریب، شهر اورشلیم به تو می‌خندد و تو را مسخره می‌کند.

²³Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

²³ فکر می‌کنی تو به چه کسی اهانت و چه کسی را مسخره می‌کردی؟ تو نسبت به من، خدای قدّوس اسرائیل، بی‌حرمتی کرده‌ای.

²⁴By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.

²⁴ تو نوکرهای خود را پیش من فرستادی تا از اینکه توانسته‌ای با ارّابه‌های جنگی خودت بلندترین کوههای لبنان را بگیری، فخر و مباهات کنی. تو از اینکه توانستی بلندترین درختهای سرو و بهترین درختان صنوبر را قطع کنی و از اینکه به عمیق‌ترین قسمت‌های جنگل‌ها دست ‌بیابی، به خود می‌بالی.

²⁵I have digged, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.

²⁵ تو از چاههای آبی که در سرزمین بیگانگان حفر کردی و آب آنها را نوشیده‌ای و همچنین از اینکه رود نیل را خشک کردی و سربازان تو از‌ آن گذشتند، به خود بالیده‌ای.

²⁶Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.

²⁶ «آیا هرگز شنیده‌ای که من تمام اینها را از زمانهای قدیم ترتیب دادم و اکنون آنها را به اجرا در می‌آورم؟ من به تو قدرت دادم که شهرهای مستحکم را به توده‌ای از خاک تبدیل کنی.

²⁷Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded: they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.

²⁷ مردمی که در آن شهرها زندگی می‌کردند، ضعیف، ترسان و حیرت‌زده بودند. آنها مثل علف صحرا یا علف هرزه‌ای هستند که بر پشت بام می‌رویند و باد گرمی که از شرق می‌وزد، آنها را می‌خشکاند.

²⁸But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.

²⁸ «امّا من همه‌چیز را دربارهٔ تو می‌دانم. من می‌دانم تو چه می‌کنی و کجا می‌روی. من از شدّت خشم تو علیه خودم آگاهم.

²⁹Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

²⁹ گزارش شدّت خشم و غرور تو به من رسیده است. اکنون قلّابی بر دماغت و لگامی بر دهانت خواهم گذاشت و تو را از همان راهی که آمده‌ای، برمی‌گردانم.»

³⁰And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself; and the second year that which springeth of the same: and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.

³⁰ آنگاه اشعیا به حزقیای پادشاه گفت: «این نشانه‌ای است از آنچه واقع خواهد شد. در این سال و سال آینده، شما فقط با غلاّت خودروی صحرایی تغذیه خواهید کرد، امّا سال بعد از آن، شما خواهید توانست غلاّت خود را بکارید و آن را درو کنید، درخت انگور بکارید و انگور آن را بخورید.

³¹And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:

³¹ آنها که در یهودا زنده می‌مانند مثل گیاهانی که ریشهٔ عمیقی در زمین دارند، رشد می‌کنند و میوه می‌دهند.

³²For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.

³² مردمی که در اورشلیم و کوه صهیون هستند، زنده خواهند ماند؛ چون خداوند متعال چنین مقدّر کرده است.

³³Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.

³³ «و این است آنچه خداوند دربارهٔ امپراتور آشور گفته است: 'او به این شهر داخل نخواهد شد و حتّی یک تیر هم به طرف آن نخواهد انداخت. هیچ سرباز مسلّحی به شهر نزدیک نخواهد شد و برای محاصرهٔ آن، سنگری در اطراف آن ساخته نخواهد شد.

³⁴By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.

³⁴ او بدون آنکه وارد شهر شود، از همان راهی که آمده بود برخواهد گشت.

³⁵For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

³⁵ به‌خاطر حرمت خودم و به‌خاطر قولی که به خادم خود داوود داده‌ام، از این شهر دفاع و از آن محافظت خواهم کرد.'»

³⁶Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

³⁶ فرشته‌ای از جانب خداوند به اردوگاه آشور رفت و یکصد و هشتاد و پنج هزار نفر از سربازان آنها را کشت. صبح روز بعد جسد بی‌جان همهٔ آنها روی زمین افتاده بود.

³⁷So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.

³⁷ آنگاه سنحاریب امپراتور آشور، عقب‌نشینی کرد و به نینوا برگشت. یک‌روز هنگامی‌که او در پرستشگاه خدای خودش -‌نِسروک- در حال پرستش بود، دو تن از پسرانش -‌ادرملک و شرآصر- با شمشیرهای خودشان او را کشتند و بعد به سرزمین آرارات گریختند. بعد یکی از پسران دیگرش به نام آسرحدون جانشین او شد.

³⁸And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

³⁸ یک‌روز هنگامی‌که او در پرستشگاه خدای خودش -‌نِسروک- در حال پرستش بود، دو تن از پسرانش -‌ادرملک و شرآصر- با شمشیرهای خودشان او را کشتند و بعد به سرزمین آرارات گریختند. بعد یکی از پسران دیگرش به نام آسرحدون جانشین او شد.
