¹Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.

¹ در چهاردهمین سال سلطنت حزقیا، پادشاه یهودا، سنحاریب، امپراتور آشور به شهرهای مستحکم یهودا حمله کرد و آنها را گرفت.

²And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.

² آنگاه به فرماندهٔ نیروهای خود، دستور داد با سپاهی بزرگ، از لاکیش به اورشلیم برود و از حزقیای پادشاه بخواهد تسلیم شود. آن فرمانده جاده‌ای را که نسّاجان در آن کار می‌کنند فتح کرد. این جاده نزدیک خندقی است که آب را از استخر فوقانی به پایین می‌آورد.

³Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the recorder.

³ سه نفر از اهالی یهودا بیرون آمدند تا با او ملاقات کنند. آنها عبارت بودند از: الیاقیم، پسر حلقیا رئیس دربار، شبنا منشی دربار و یوآخ پسر آساف که مسئول اسناد بود.

⁴And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

⁴ نمایندهٔ دولت آشور به آنها گفت که امپراتور می‌خواهد بداند چه چیزی حزقیای پادشاه را این‌قدر از موفّقیّت خودش مطمئن می‌سازد.

⁵I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

⁵ او به آنها گفت: «آیا فکر می‌کنید حرفهای شما می‌تواند جایگزین مهارت و قدرت نظامی شود؟ فکر می‌کنید کسی از شما حمایت می‌کند وقتی برضد آشور شورش می‌کنید؟

⁶Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.

⁶ شما انتظار دارید مصر به کمک شما بیاید. امّا مثل این است که از یک چوب بوریا به جای عصا استفاده کنید. آن چوب می‌شکند و دست شما را هم سوراخ می‌کند. این است موفّقیّت فرعون و هر که به او اعتماد می‌کند.»

⁷But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?

⁷ نمایندهٔ دولت آشور ادامه داد و گفت: «آیا می‌خواهید به من بگویید که شما به خداوند، خدای خودتان مُتّکی هستید؟ وقتی حزقیا به مردم یهودا و اورشلیم گفت که آنها باید فقط در یک قربانگاه پرستش کنند. او با این کارش، تمام مکانهای مقدّس و معابد خداوند را ویران کرد.

⁸Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

⁸ من از جانب امپراتور آشور با شما معامله‌ای می‌کنم؛ به شما دو هزار اسب خواهم داد به شرط آنکه شما بتوانید به همان تعداد اسب سوار پیدا کنید.

⁹How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

⁹ شما حریف کوچکترین فرد ارتش آشور هم نخواهید شد، با وجود این شما انتظار دارید مصری‌ها برای شما ارّابه‌های جنگی و سواره نظام بفرستند؟

¹⁰And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

¹⁰ آیا فکر می‌کنید من بدون کمک خداوند به کشور شما حمله و آن ‌را ویران کردم؟ خداوند خودش به من گفت به آن حمله کنم و آن را از بین ببرم.»

¹¹Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

¹¹ آنگاه الیاقیم، شبنا و یوآخ به سفیر آشور گفتند: «با ما به زبان آرامی صحبت کنید، آن را می‌فهمیم. به زبان عبری صحبت نکنید چون کسانی‌که بالای دیوار هستند، می‌شنوند.»

¹²But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?

¹² او در پاسخ گفت: «آیا فکر می‌کنید که امپراتور مرا فرستاده تا فقط با شما و پادشاه دربارهٔ این چیزها صحبت کنم؟ نه! من با مردمی هم که بر روی دیوار هستند، نیز سخن می‌گویم -‌همان کسانی‌که مدفوع خود را خواهند خورد و ادرار خود را خواهند نوشید- همان کاری که شما نیز خواهید کرد.»

¹³Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

¹³ آنگاه سفیر روی پا ایستاد و به زبان عبری فریاد زد و گفت: «به آنچه امپراتور آشور می‌گوید، گوش دهید.

¹⁴Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.

¹⁴ او به شما اخطار می‌کند و می‌گوید نگذارید حزقیا شما را فریب دهد. او نمی‌تواند شما را نجات دهد.

¹⁵Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

¹⁵ و نگذارید که حزقیا شما را وادار کند تا به خداوند مُتّکی باشید. فکر نکنید که خداوند شما را نجات خواهد داد، و او مانع تصرّف شهرتان به وسیلهٔ ارتش آشور خواهد شد.

¹⁶Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;

¹⁶ به حرفهای حزقیا گوش نکنید. امپراتور آشور از شما می‌خواهد از شهر بیرون بیایید و تسلیم شوید. به شما اجازه داده می‌شود انگور تاکستانهای خودتان و انجیر درختان خویش را بخورید و از چاههای آب خودتان بنوشید.

¹⁷Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

¹⁷ -‌تا زمانی که امپراتور شما را در سرزمینی شبیه وطن خودتان اسکان دهد- جایی که تاکستانهای آن، شراب شما و غلاّت آن، نان شما را تأمین می‌کند.

¹⁸Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, the LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

¹⁸ نگذارید حزقیا شما را با این حرفها فریب دهد که خداوند شما را نجات خواهد داد. آیا خدایان سایر ملّتها توانسته‌اند سرزمین خودشان را از دست امپراتور آشور نجات دهند؟

¹⁹Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

¹⁹ آن خدایان اکنون کجا هستند؟ کجا هستند خدایان حمات و ارفاد؟ کجا هستند خدایان سفروایم؟ آیا آنها توانسته‌اند سامره را نجات دهند؟

²⁰Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

²⁰ چه وقتی و چه خدایی توانسته کشوری را از دست امپراتور ما نجات دهد؟ در آن صورت چطور فکر می‌کنید که خداوند اورشلیم را نجات دهد؟»

²¹But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

²¹ مردم همان‌طور که حزقیای پادشاه به آنها گفته بود ساکت ماندند و هیچ نگفتند. آنگاه الیاقیم، شبنا و یوآخ از ناراحتی و غم لباسهای خود را دریدند. به پیش پادشاه رفتند و هرچه را سفیر آشور گفته بود، به او گزارش دادند.

²²Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

²² آنگاه الیاقیم، شبنا و یوآخ از ناراحتی و غم لباسهای خود را دریدند. به پیش پادشاه رفتند و هرچه را سفیر آشور گفته بود، به او گزارش دادند.
