¹Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

¹ ای قوم اسرائیل، به پیامی که خداوند برای شما دارد گوش دهید.

²Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

² او می‌گوید: «از راه و رسم سایر ملّتها پیروی نکنید، از دیدن چیزهای غیرعادی در آسمان مضطرب نشوید، حتّی اگر سایر ملّتها از دیدن آنها وحشت می‌کنند.

³For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

³ دین و آیین این مردمان پوچ و بی‌ارزش می‌باشند. درختی را از جنگل می‌برند، صنعتکاری با ابزارش آن را شکل می‌دهد،

⁴They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

⁴ و با طلا و نقره تزیینش می‌کند، آنگاه آن را با میخ بر پایه‌ای محکم می‌کنند تا نیفتد.

⁵They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.

⁵ این بُتها مثل مترسکهایی در یک جالیزار هستند، آنها نمی‌توانند چیزی بگویند، و باید آنها را حمل کرد، چون خودشان نمی‌توانند راه بروند. از آنها نترسید، آنها نه می‌توانند به شما آسیبی برسانند، و نه می‌توانند برایتان کار خیری انجام دهند.»

⁶Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

⁶ ای خداوند، هیچ‌کس مثل تو نیست، تو قادری و نامت عظیم و تواناست.

⁷Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.

⁷ ای پادشاه تمام ملّتها، کیست که از تو نترسد؟ تو تنها شایستهٔ احترامی، مثل تو در میان تمام حکیمانِ ملّتها و در میان سایر پادشاهان یافت نمی‌شود.

⁸But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.

⁸ تمام آنها احمق و جاهل‌اند. آنها از بُتهای چوبی چه چیزی می‌توانند بیاموزند؟

⁹Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

⁹ بُتهایشان را با نقره‌ای از اسپانیا و طلایی از اوفاد روکش می‌کنند. بعد آنها را با لباسهایی به رنگ بنفش و ارغوانی که بافندگان ماهر بافته‌اند، می‌پوشانند.

¹⁰But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.

¹⁰ امّا تو، ای خداوند، خدای حقیقی هستی، تو خدای زنده و پادشاه ابدی هستی. وقتی تو خشمگین شوی، جهان می‌لرزد ملّت طاقت تحمّل آن را ندارند.

¹¹Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.

¹¹ (ای قوم من، شما باید به آنها بگویید: خدایانی که آسمان و زمین را نیافریدند، نابود خواهند شد. آنها دیگر هرگز بر روی زمین وجود نخواهند داشت.)

¹²He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.

¹² خداوند با قدرت خود زمین را ساخت و با حکمت خویش جهان را آفرید، و با فهم خود آسمانها را گسترانید.

¹³When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.

¹³ به فرمان اوست که ابرها می‌غرّند. اوست که ابرها را از دورترین نقاط جهان می‌آورد. اوست که در میان باران برق ایجاد می‌کند، و هم اوست که باد را از خزانه‌های خود بیرون می‌فرستد.

¹⁴Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.

¹⁴ با دیدن چنین چیزهایی، انسانها فکر می‌کنند که چقدر احمق و بی‌شعورند، آنها که بُتها را می‌سازند آدمهای سرخورده‌ای هستند، چون خدایانی که می‌سازند، دروغین و بی‌جان‌اند.

¹⁵They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

¹⁵ آنها بی‌ارزش و منفورند. وقتی خداوند برای رسیدگی به حساب آنها بیاید، آنها همه نابود خواهند شد.

¹⁶The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.

¹⁶ خدای یعقوب مثل آنها نیست. او خالق همه‌چیز است، او اسرائیل را برگزید تا قوم خاص او باشند، و نام او خدای متعال است.

¹⁷Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.

¹⁷ ای مردم اورشلیم شما در محاصره هستید! هرچه را دارید جمع کنید.

¹⁸For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.

¹⁸ خداوند شما را بزودی از این سرزمین بیرون خواهد راند. چنان خداوند شما را می‌کوبد که حتّی یکی از شما باقی نخواهید ماند. خداوند چنین گفته است.

¹⁹Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous; but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.

¹⁹ مردم اورشلیم با فریاد گفتند: «چه ضربهٔ سختی برما وارد شده! زخمهای ما التیام نمی‌یابد! ما می‌پنداشتیم که می‌توانیم آن را تحمّل کنیم!

²⁰My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.

²⁰ چادرهای ما خراب شده و ریسمانهای آن پاره شده‌اند. فرزندان ما همه رفته‌اند، دیگر کسی نمانده تا چادر‌های ما را برپا کند، و کسی نمانده تا پرده‌‌های آنها را آویزان کند.»

²¹For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.

²¹ در پاسخ گفتم: «رهبران ما احمقند، آنها طالب خداوند نیستند. به همین خاطر آنها شکست خوردند و قوم پراکنده شده‌ است.

²²Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.

²² گوش دهید! اخبار تازه‌ای رسیده است! از ملّتی که در شمال هستند هیاهوی زیادی به گوش می‌رسد، ارتش آن، شهرهای یهودا را تبدیل به بیابان و لانهٔ شغالان کرده است.»

²³O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

²³ ای خداوند، من می‌دانم که سرنوشتمان در دست خودمان نیست، و هیچ‌کدام از ما قادر به تغییر زندگیمان نیستیم.

²⁴O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.

²⁴ خداوندا قوم خود را تنبیه کن، امّا بر ما بیش از اندازه سخت نگیر و ما را از روی خشم مجازات نکن، چون از ما چیزی باقی نخواهد ماند. خشم خود را متوجّه ملّتهایی کن که تو را پرستش نمی‌کنند. و تو را ترک کرده‌اند. آنها قوم تو را کشته‌اند، ما را کاملاً نابود و این سرزمین را ویران ساخته‌اند.

²⁵Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.

²⁵ خشم خود را متوجّه ملّتهایی کن که تو را پرستش نمی‌کنند. و تو را ترک کرده‌اند. آنها قوم تو را کشته‌اند، ما را کاملاً نابود و این سرزمین را ویران ساخته‌اند.
