¹Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

¹ ای کاش سرم چشمهٔ پر آب، و چشمهایم جویباری از اشک بود، تا می‌توانستم روز و شب برای قوم خودم که کشته شده‌اند، بگریم.

²Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.

² کاش جایی در بیابان می‌داشتم تا بتوانم از قوم خود دور باشم. آنها همه بی‌وفا و خائن‌اند.

³And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.

³ برای دروغگویی همیشه حاضرند، ناراستی به جای راستی در این سرزمین حاکم است. خداوند می‌گوید: «قوم من مرتکب شرارت می‌شوند و دیگر مرا به عنوان خدای خود قبول ندارند.»

⁴Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders.

⁴ همه باید از دوستان خود برحذر باشند، و هیچ‌کس به برادر خود اعتماد نکند، چون تمام برادرها مثل یعقوب فریبکارند، هرکس به دوست خود تهمت و افترا می‌زند،

⁵And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.

⁵ آنها همه دوستان خود را گمراه می‌کنند، و هیچ‌کس حقیقت را نمی‌گوید. آنها زبانهای خود را به دروغ عادت داده‌اند، و نمی‌توانند دست از گناه بردارند. خشونت‌های آنها یکی پس از دیگری و فریبکاریهای آنها پی‌درپی است. خداوند می‌گوید که قوم خودش او را رد کرده‌اند

⁶Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the LORD.

⁶ به همین خاطر، خداوند متعال می‌گوید: «من قوم خود را مثل فلز پالایش می‌دهم، و با سنگ محک آنها را خواهم آزمود. قوم من مرتکب شرارت شده‌اند. با آنها دیگر چه می‌توانم بکنم؟

⁷Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how shall I do for the daughter of my people?

⁷ زبانهای‌ آنها مثل تیرهای زهر‌آگین است، و همیشه دروغ می‌گویند. هرکس با همسایهٔ خویش با زبان خوش سخن می‌گوید، امّا در حقیقت در فکر به دام انداختن اوست.

⁸Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.

⁸ آیا من نباید آنها را برای این کارهایشان تنبیه کنم؟ آیا نباید از چنین ملّتی انتقام بگیرم؟ من، خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

⁹Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

⁹ من گفتم: «برای آن کوهها در ماتم، و برای آن چراگاهها گریان هستم، چون همهٔ آنها خشک شده‌اند و دیگر کسی از آنجا گذر نمی‌کند. دیگر صدای گلّه و رمه از آنجا شنیده نمی‌شود، و حتّی پرندگان و حیوانات هم از آنجا رفته‌اند.»

¹⁰For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.

¹⁰ خداوند می‌گوید: «من اورشلیم را به ویرانه‌ای، به جایی برای لانهٔ شغالان تبدیل خواهم کرد. و شهرهای یهودا به کویری تبدیل خواهد شد که هیچ‌کس نمی‌تواند در آن زندگی کند.»

¹¹And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.

¹¹ من گفتم: «ای خداوند، چرا این سرزمین مثل بیابان چنین ویران و خشک شده که کسی نمی‌تواند از آن عبور کند؟ چه کسی می‌تواند این را درک کند؟ به چه کسی آن را گفته‌ای تا او بتواند به دیگران توضیح بدهد؟»

¹²Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through?

¹² خداوند در پاسخ گفت: «تمام این به‌خاطر آن است که قوم من از تعالیم من پیروی نکرده است. آنها از من و از آنچه به آنها تعلیم دادم سرپیچی کرده‌اند.

¹³And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;

¹³ در عوض آنها سرسختانه همان‌طور که نیاکانشان آموختند، به پرستش بُتهای بعل پرداختند.

¹⁴But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:

¹⁴ پس گوش بده و بدان که من، خداوند متعال خدای اسرائیل، چه خواهم کرد. من به قوم خودم گیاهان تلخ برای خوردن و سَم برای نوشیدن خواهم داد.

¹⁵Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.

¹⁵ من آنها را به میان اقوامی خواهم فرستاد که نه خودشان و نه نیاکانشان دربارهٔ آنها چیزی شنیده‌اند. من همچنین ارتش‌هایی برضد آنها خواهم فرستاد تا آنها را کاملاً نابود کنم.»

¹⁶I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them.

¹⁶ خداوند متعال گفت: «دربارهٔ آنچه روی می‌دهد بیندیشید! سوگواران را دعوت کنید، از زنان نوحه‌سرا بخواهید حاضر شوند.»

¹⁷Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come:

¹⁷ مردم در پاسخ گفتند: «بگویید عجله کنند و برای سوگواری ما آن‌قدر نوحه سرایی کنند، تا چشمان ما از اشک پُر و مژگان ما از گریستن خیس شوند.»

¹⁸And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.

¹⁸ به صدای گریه در صهیون گوش دهید: «ما از بین رفته‌ایم و کاملاً رسوا شده‌ایم! باید از این سرزمین دور شویم. خانه‌های ما ویران شده است.»

¹⁹For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out.

¹⁹ من گفتم: «ای زنان به آنچه خداوند می‌گوید گوش دهید، و به کلمات او توجّه کنید. به دختران خود سوگواری و به دوستان خود نوحه‌سرایی را بیاموزید.

²⁰Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation.

²⁰ مرگ از روزنهٔ پنجره‌ها وارد کاخهای ما شده است، کودکان را در کوچه‌ها و نوجوانان را در بازارها از بین می‌برد.

²¹For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets.

²¹ اجساد بی‌جان -‌مثل توده‌های کُود در مزارع، و مانند خرمنی که درو کنندگان جا گذاشته‌ و کسی آنها را جمع نکرده باشد- در همه‌جا پراکنده هستند. این است آنچه خداوند به من گفت که بگویم.»

²²Speak, Thus saith the LORD, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, and none shall gather them.

²² خداوند می‌گوید: «افراد دانا نباید به دانش خود ببالند، و آدمهای قوی نباید به قدرت خود افتخار کنند، و نه اشخاص ثروتمند به ثروت خویش.

²³Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

²³ اگر کسی می‌خواهد به چیزی ببالد، باید به این ببالد که مرا می‌شناسد، چون محبّت من پایدار است و آنچه را راست و درست است، انجام می‌دهم. این چیزهایی است که مرا خشنود می‌سازند. من خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.» خداوند می‌گوید: «زمانی می‌رسد که من مردم مصر، یهودا، اَدوم، عمون، موآب و ساکنان صحرا را که موهای خود را کوتاه می‌کنند، مجازات خواهم کرد. تمام اینها ختنه‌ شده‌اند، ولی پیمانی را که ختنه فقط نشانهٔ آن است، نگاه نداشته‌اند. هیچ‌کس از این مردم و هیچ‌یک از قوم اسرائیل پیمان مرا رعایت نکرده‌اند.»

²⁴But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

²⁴ خداوند می‌گوید: «زمانی می‌رسد که من مردم مصر، یهودا، اَدوم، عمون، موآب و ساکنان صحرا را که موهای خود را کوتاه می‌کنند، مجازات خواهم کرد. تمام اینها ختنه‌ شده‌اند، ولی پیمانی را که ختنه فقط نشانهٔ آن است، نگاه نداشته‌اند. هیچ‌کس از این مردم و هیچ‌یک از قوم اسرائیل پیمان مرا رعایت نکرده‌اند.»

²⁵Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised;

²⁶Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.
