¹At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves:

¹ «در آن زمان استخوانهای پادشاهان، بزرگان یهودا و همچنین استخوانهای کاهنان، انبیا و سایر کسانی‌که در اورشلیم زندگی می‌کردند، از قبرهایشان بیرون آورده خواهد شد.

²And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

² استخوانها را جمع نمی‌کنند تا دوباره آنها را دفن کنند، بلکه آنها مثل کود روی زمین در برابر خورشید و ماه و ستارگان -‌خدایان مورد علاقهٔ خود- پهن خواهند ‌شد، خدایانی که می‌پرستیدند و از آنها راهنمایی می‌خواستند.

³And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the LORD of hosts.

³ کسانی از این ملّت شریر که زنده بمانند، در جاهایی که من آنها را پراکنده می‌‌کنم زندگی خواهند کرد. ولی آنها مرگ را بر ادامهٔ آن زندگی ترجیح خواهند داد. من، خداوند متعال چنین گفته‌ام.»

⁴Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?

⁴ خداوند به من گفت به قوم چنین بگویم: «آیا وقتی کسی زمین می‌خورد دوباره بلند نمی‌شود؟ اگر کسی راه اشتباه برود، برنمی‌گردد؟ ‌

⁵Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.

⁵ پس چرا شما ای قوم من، مرا ترک کردید و دیگر برنگشتید؟ شما به بُتهای خود متوصّل شده‌اید و نمی‌خواهید به نزد من بازگردید.

⁶I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.

⁶ من با دقّت گوش دادم، ولی شما حقیقت را نگفتید. هیچ‌یک از شما از شرارت خود پشیمان نیست. حتّی یک نفر از شما نپرسیده 'من چه اشتباهی کرده‌ام' مثل اسبی که با سرعت به سوی میدان جنگ می‌رود، هرکس راه خود را دنبال می‌کند.

⁷Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the LORD.

⁷ حتّی لک‌لکها زمان بازگشت خود را می‌دانند، کبوترها، پرستوها، و مرغهای ماهیخوار همه زمان کوچ خود را می‌دانند امّا شما ای قوم من، قوانین مرا نمی‌دانید.

⁸How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.

⁸ چگونه می‌توانید خود را دانا بدانید و بگویید قوانین مرا می‌دانید؟ ببینید، قوانین من به وسیلهٔ کاتبان نادرست عوض شده است.

⁹The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the LORD; and what wisdom is in them?

⁹ خردمندان شما شرمسار و گیج و درمانده‌اند. آنها کلام مرا رد کرده‌اند. این چه حکمتی است که آنها دارند؟

¹⁰Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.

¹⁰ پس من مزارع آنها را به مالکان جدید و زنهایشان را به مردان دیگر خواهم داد. همه، از کوچک و بزرگ کوشش می‌کنند با تقلّب و ناراستی پولدار شوند. حتّی انبیا و کاهنان هم مردم را فریب می‌دهند.

¹¹For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

¹¹ آنها طوری با قوم من رفتار می‌کنند که گویی زخمهای آنها چیزی جز خراشی سطحی نیست. آنها می‌گویند: 'همه‌چیز خوب است.' درحالی‌که هیچ چیز خوب نیست.

¹²Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.

¹² ای قوم من، آیا از انجام این کارهای نفرت‌انگیز شرم نداشتید؟ نه، شما شرم و حیا نداشتید؛ و اصلاً نمی‌دانید خجالت چیست؟ پس همراه دیگران ساقط خواهید شد. وقتی شما را به مجازات کارهایتان برسانم، دیگر از شما نشانی نخواهد بود. من، خداوند متعال چنین گفته‌ام.

¹³I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.

¹³ «می‌خواستم مثل کسی‌که محصول خود را جمع می‌کند، قوم خود را جمع کنم؛ امّا آنها مثل تاک بی‌انگور، و مثل درخت انجیر بی‌میوه هستند. حتّی برگهای آنها هم پژمرده شده‌اند. پس من اجازه دادم تا بیگانگان آن زمین را تصرّف کنند.»

¹⁴Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.

¹⁴ قوم خدا می‌پرسد: «چرا این چنین ساکت نشسته‌ایم؟ بیایید تا به شهرهایی با دیوارهای مستحکم برویم و در آنجا بمیریم. خداوند خدای ما، ما را به مرگ محکوم کرده است. او به ما زهری داده که باید آن را بنوشیم، چون ما برضد او مرتکب گناه شده‌ایم.

¹⁵We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!

¹⁵ ما امید داشتیم زمان صلح و شفا برسد، امّا بی‌فایده بود. به عوض آن وحشت به ما روی آورد.

¹⁶The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.

¹⁶ دشمنان ما هم‌اکنون به شهر دان رسیده‌اند. صدای خروش اسبانشان را می‌شنویم. از صدای شیههٔ اسبها تمام سرزمین می لرزد. دشمنان ما آمده‌اند تا سرزمین ما، شهر ما، ملّت ما و همهٔ چیزهای دیگر را از بین ببرند.»

¹⁷For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the LORD.

¹⁷ خداوند می‌گوید: «مواظب باشید، من مارهای سمی -‌مارهایی که افسون نمی‌شوند- به میان شما خواهم فرستاد و آنها شما را خواهند گزید.»

¹⁸When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.

¹⁸ اندوه من بی‌درمان است و دل من پر از درد است.

¹⁹Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities?

¹⁹ گوش دهید، در تمام این سرزمین صدای گریهٔ قوم من شنیده می‌شود. آنها می‌پرسند: «آیا دیگر خداوند در صهیون نیست؟ آیا پادشاه صهیون دیگر در آنجا نیست؟» خداوند پادشاه آنها، در جواب می‌گوید: «چرا با پرستش بُتهای خودتان و با تعظیم در برابر خدایان بی‌ارزش بیگانگان مرا به خشم آوردید؟»

²⁰The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.

²⁰ مردم با گریه می‌گویند: «تابستان و فصل برداشت محصول به پایان رسید، امّا ما هنوز خلاص نشده‌ایم.»

²¹For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.

²¹ دل من شکسته، چون قوم من درهم شکسته‌ است، من عزادار، سوگوار و ماتم زده‌ام. آیا مرهمی در جلعاد پیدا نمی‌شود؟ و آیا طبیبی در آن نیست؟ پس چرا قوم من درمان نشده است؟

²²Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
