¹Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?

¹ «ای خداوند اگر با تو بحث کنم، تو همیشه پیروز می‌شوی! با وجود این، در مورد عدالت از تو پرسشی دارم. چرا بدکاران کامروا و خیانتکاران موفّق‌اند؟

²Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root: they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins.

² تو آنها را مثل نهال کاشتی و ریشه دوانده، رشد می‌کنند و میوه نمی‌دهند آنها با زبان خود تو را تمجید می‌کنند، ولی درحقیقت به تو توجّهی ندارند.

³But thou, O LORD, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

³ امّا، ای خداوند، تو مرا می‌شناسی و هرچه انجام می‌دهم تو می‌بینی و می‌دانی چقدر تو را دوست دارم. این مردمان شریر را مثل گوسفندانی که برای قصّابی می‌برند، از اینجا بیرون ببر؛ و تا زمان کشتارشان آنها را جدا نگاهدار.

⁴How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.

⁴ تا به کی این سرزمین ما باید این‌قدر خشک باشد و علف مزارع ما پژمرده باشند؟ حیوانات و پرندگان هم به‌خاطر شرارت قوم در حال مرگند، قومی که می‌گوید 'خدا نمی‌بیند ما چه می‌کنیم؟'»

⁵If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?

⁵ خداوند گفت: «ای ارمیا، اگر از مسابقه دادن با مردمان این‌قدر خسته شده‌ای، چگونه می‌توانی با اسبان مسابقه دهی؟ اگر نمی‌توانی در زمین صاف و هموار روی پای خود بایستی، در جنگلهای اردن چه خواهی کرد؟

⁶For even thy brethren, and the house of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.

⁶ حتّی اعضای خانواده‌ات به تو خیانت کرده‌اند، و با همدستی دشمنان به تو حمله می‌کنند. به آنها اعتماد نکن، حتّی اگر آنها دوستانه با تو سخن گویند.»

⁷I have forsaken mine house, I have left mine heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.

⁷ خداوند می‌گوید: «من اسرائیل را ترک و قوم برگزیدهٔ خودم را طرد کردم. من قوم محبوب خود را تسلیم دشمنانشان نمودم.

⁸Mine heritage is unto me as a lion in the forest; it crieth out against me: therefore have I hated it.

⁸ قوم برگزیدهٔ من مخالف من شده‌اند؛ مثل شیری در جنگل بر من می‌غرّد. از این رو از آنها بیزارم.

⁹Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her; come ye, assemble all the beasts of the field, come to devour.

⁹ قوم برگزیدهٔ من مثل پرنده‌ای است که از هر طرف مورد هجوم بازهای شکاری قرار گرفته باشد. حیوانات وحشی را صدا کنید تا به این ضیافت بیایند.

¹⁰Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard, they have trodden my portion under foot, they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness.

¹⁰ بسیاری از فرمانروایان بیگانه، تاکستان مرا ویران و مزراع مرا لگدمال کرده‌اند. سرزمین زیبای مرا به بیابان مبدّل ساختند،

¹¹They have made it desolate, and being desolate it mourneth unto me; the whole land is made desolate, because no man layeth it to heart.

¹¹ و از آن، زمین بایر به وجود آوردند؛ زمینی متروک و بی‌حاصل! تمام زمین به بیابان بی‌آب و علف تبدیل شده و کسی به آن اهمیّت نمی‌دهد.

¹²The spoilers are come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of the LORD shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.

¹² از آن سوی بلندیهای بیابان مردم برای غارت آمده‌اند. من چنان جنگی در این سرزمین برافروختم که دیگر کسی از آن در امان نخواهد بود.

¹³They have sown wheat, but shall reap thorns: they have put themselves to pain, but shall not profit: and they shall be ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the LORD.

¹³ قوم من گندم کاشتند ولی علف هرز درو کردند، آنها زحمت زیاد کشیدند، امّا چیزی عایدشان نشد. به‌خاطر غضب من محصولشان از بین رفت.»

¹⁴Thus saith the LORD against all mine evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to inherit; Behold, I will pluck them out of their land, and pluck out the house of Judah from among them.

¹⁴ خداوند می‌گوید: «امّا دربارهٔ همسایگان اسرائیل که میراث قوم من، زمینی را که من به آنها داده بودم، ویران کردند. من آن مردمان شریر را مثل گیاهی که از ریشه می‌کَنند از سرزمینشان بیرون خواهم کرد و مردم یهودا را نجات خواهم داد.

¹⁵And it shall come to pass, after that I have plucked them out I will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land.

¹⁵ بعد از آن که آنها را دور ساختم، دوباره نسبت به آنها رحیم خواهم بود. تمام ملّتها را به سرزمینهای خودشان برمی‌گردانم.

¹⁶And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people.

¹⁶ اگر با تمام دل آیین قوم مرا بپذیرند، و به نام من سوگند یاد کنند، همان‌طور که روزی به قوم من می‌آموختند به نام بعل قسم بخورند، آنگاه آنها هم جزو قوم من خواهند بود و کامیاب خواهند شد. امّا اگر ملّتی اطاعت نکند، من آن را کاملاً از ریشه قطع می‌کنم و از بین خواهم بُرد. من، خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

¹⁷But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD.

¹⁷ امّا اگر ملّتی اطاعت نکند، من آن را کاملاً از ریشه قطع می‌کنم و از بین خواهم بُرد. من، خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»
