¹The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.

¹ خداوند در مورد خشکسالی به من چنین گفت:

²Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.

² «یهودا سوگوار است و شهروندانش در حال مرگند. مردم از اندوه به روی زمین افتاده‌اند، و مردم اورشلیم برای کمک فریاد برمی‌آورند.

³And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.

³ ثروتمندان، نوکران خود را به دنبال آب می‌فرستند؛ آنها به آب‌انبارها می‌روند، ولی اثری از آب نمی‌یابند؛ و با کوزه‌های خالی برمی‌گردند؛ ناامید و پریشان، صورتهای خود را می‌پوشانند.

⁴Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.

⁴ چون بارانی نباریده، و زمین خشک شده، زارعین دلشکسته‌اند، و صورتهای خود را پنهان می‌کنند.

⁵Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass.

⁵ در صحرا، آهوی مادر نوزاد خود را رها کرده چون علفی برای چریدن نیست.

⁶And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.

⁶ الاغهای وحشی بر فراز تپّه‌ها می‌ایستند و مثل شغالان لَه‌لَه می‌کنند، و چون غذایی نخورده‌اند بینایی خود را از دست می‌دهند

⁷O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name's sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.

⁷ مردم فریاد برمی‌آورند و می‌گویند: 'اگرچه گناهان ما، موجب محکومیّت ما باشد. ای خداوند، طبق وعده‌ات به داد ما برس، بارها از تو روگردانیده‌ایم و برضد تو گناه ورزیده‌ایم.

⁸O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night?

⁸ تو تنها امید قوم اسرائیل هستی، تو کسی هستی که ما را از این مصیبت نجات می‌دهد چرا تو در سرزمین ما مثل یک بیگانه هستی، و مثل مسافری هستی که فقط یک شب در اینجا می‌ماند؟

⁹Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.

⁹ چرا مثل کسی رفتار می‌کنی که گویا غافلگیر شده است، مثل سربازی که قادر به کمک نیست؟ ای خداوند، تو مسلّماً با ما هستی! ما قوم تو هستیم، ما را ترک مکن.'»

¹⁰Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.

¹⁰ خداوند دربارهٔ این مردم می‌گوید: «آنها مایلند از حضور من بگریزند و نمی‌توانند خود را کنترل کنند. از این رو من از آنها خشنود نیستم. من خطاهای آنها را به یاد می‌آورم و آنها را به‌خاطر گناهانشان مجازات خواهم کرد.»

¹¹Then said the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.

¹¹ خداوند به من گفت: «از من نخواه که به این مردم کمک کنم.

¹²When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.

¹² حتّی اگر آنها روزه بگیرند، به فریادهای آنها گوش نخواهم داد؛ حتّی اگر آنها هدایای سوختنی و غلّه به حضور من بیاورند، از آنها راضی نخواهم بود. در عوض من آنها را به وسیلهٔ جنگ و قحطی و بیماری خواهم کشت.»

¹³Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.

¹³ بعد گفتم: «ای خدای قادر متعال، تو می‌‌دانی که انبیا به مردم می‌گویند خبری از جنگ و قحطی نخواهد بود. آنها می‌گویند که تو گفته‌ای که در این سرزمین صلح و آرامش خواهد بود.»

¹⁴Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

¹⁴ خداوند در پاسخ گفت: «انبیا به نام من دروغ می‌گویند. من آنها را نفرستادم و به آنها دستوری ندادم و یک کلمه هم به آنها نگفتم. رؤیاهایی که دربارهٔ آنها سخن می‌گویند از جانب من نیست و پیشگویی‌هایشان همه خیالی و بی‌ارزشند.

¹⁵Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

¹⁵ من، خداوند به تو می‌گویم با آن انبیایی که من نفرستادم و از جانب من می‌گویند در این سرزمین جنگ و قحطی نخواهد بود، چه خواهم کرد. من آنها را در جنگ و قحطی خواهم کشت.

¹⁶And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.

¹⁶ مردم هم که به حرف آنها گوش داده‌اند، به همین نحو کشته خواهند شد. اجساد آنها در کوچه‌های اورشلیم ریخته می‌شود و کسی نخواهد بود که آنها را دفن کند. آنها همه، از جمله زنها، پسران و دخترانشان دچار همین سرنوشت خواهند شد. من جزای شرارتهای آنها را خواهم داد.»

¹⁷Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.

¹⁷ خداوند به من دستور داد تا دربارهٔ اندوه خودم با مردم صحبت کنم و بگویم: «بگذارید شب و روز از چشمانم اشک جاری شود و هیچ‌وقت از گریستن باز نایستم، چون قوم من بشدّت مجروح و عمیقاً آسیب دیده است.

¹⁸If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.

¹⁸ وقتی به مزارع بیرون از شهر می‌روم، اجساد مردانی را که در جنگ کشته شده‌اند، می‌بینم؛ وقتی به داخل شهرها می‌روم، مردمی را می‌بینم که از گرسنگی در حال مرگ هستند. انبیا و کاهنان همچنان به کار خود ادامه می‌دهند، امّا نمی‌دانند چه می‌کنند.»

¹⁹Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble!

¹⁹ خداوندا، آیا یهودا را کاملاً طرد کرده‌ای؟ آیا از مردم صهیون نفرت داری؟ چرا چنان ضربه‌ای به ما وارد کردی که نمی‌توان علاجی برای آن پیدا کرد؟ ما در انتظار صلح بودیم، ولی خبری به ما نرسید؛ ما امید شفا داشتیم، ولی وحشت نصیبمان شد.

²⁰We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.

²⁰ ای خداوند، ما علیه تو مرتکب گناه شده‌ایم. ما به گناهان خود و به گناهان اجدادمان اعتراف می‌کنیم.

²¹Do not abhor us, for thy name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.

²¹ وعد‌ه‌های خود را به یادآور و از ما متنفّر نباش، اورشلیم، جایگاه تخت پرجلال خود را رسوا نکن. پیمان خودت را با ما نشکن. هیچ‌کدام از بُتهای ملّتهای دیگر نمی‌توانند باران ببارانند. و آسمان بدون تو نمی‌تواند باران بباراند. ای خداوند خدای ما، امید ما به توست، چون این تو هستی که همهٔ این کارها را می‌کنی.

²²Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.

²² هیچ‌کدام از بُتهای ملّتهای دیگر نمی‌توانند باران ببارانند. و آسمان بدون تو نمی‌تواند باران بباراند. ای خداوند خدای ما، امید ما به توست، چون این تو هستی که همهٔ این کارها را می‌کنی.
