¹Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives, and to the priests, and to the prophets, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon;

¹ من نامه‌ای به کاهنان، انبیا و رهبران قوم و همچنین به بقیّهٔ کسانی‌که نبوکدنصر از اورشلیم به اسارت به بابل برده بود، نوشتم.

²(After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem;)

² من آن را بعد از اینکه یهویاکین پادشاه، مادرش، درباریان و رهبران یهودا و اورشلیم به همراه پیشه‌وران و کارگران ماهر به اسارت رفته بودند، نوشتم.

³By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying,

³ من آن نامه را به العاسه، پسر شافان و جمریا پسر حلقیا، یعنی سفیرانی که صدقیا پادشاه یهودا، به نزد نبوکدنصر پادشاه بابل می‌فرستاد، دادم. متن نامه چنین بود:

⁴Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem unto Babylon;

⁴ «خداوند متعال، خدای اسرائیل به همهٔ کسانی‌که اجازه داده نبوکدنصر آنها را به اسارت از اورشلیم به بابل ببرد، چنین می‌گوید:

⁵Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them;

⁵ 'برای خودتان خانه بسازید و در آن ساکن شوید. در باغهایتان بکارید و ثمر آن را بخورید.

⁶Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished.

⁶ ازدواج کنید و صاحب فرزندان شوید. بعد بگذارید فرزندان شما ازدواج کنند تا آنها هم دارای فرزند شوند. باید تعداد شما افزون شود نه کم.

⁷And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace.

⁷ برای سعادت و خوشبختی شهرهایی که من شما را به آنجا به اسارت فرستاده‌ام، بکوشید. برای آنها به نزد من دعا کنید، چون اگر آنها کامیاب باشند شما هم کامیاب خواهید بود.

⁸For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.

⁸ من خداوند متعال، خدای اسرائیل به شما می‌گویم از کسانی‌که در میان شما به نام نبی یا به هر نام دیگری ادّعا می‌کنند آینده را پیشگویی می‌کنند، برحذر باشید و فریب آنها را نخورید. به خوابهای آنها اعتنایی نکنید.

⁹For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the LORD.

⁹ آنها به نام من به شما دروغ می‌گویند. من آنها را نفرستادم. من، خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.'

¹⁰For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

¹⁰ «خداوند می‌گوید: 'وقتی دورهٔ هفتاد سالهٔ اسارت بابل به پایان برسد، من نگرانی و توجّه خودم را نسبت به شما نشان خواهم داد و من به عهد خود وفا خواهم کرد و شما را به سرزمین خودتان برمی‌گردانم.

¹¹For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

¹¹ تنها من هستم که از سرنوشتی که برای شما تعیین کرده‌ام، آگاهم. سرنوشتی که برای شما رفاه و سعادت می‌آورد نه مصیبت، نقشه‌ای برای آینده‌ای که در انتظار آن هستید.

¹²Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

¹² آنگاه شما به سوی من بر‌می‌گردید، حاجت خودتان را از من خواهید خواست و من حاجت شما را بر‌آورده می‌کنم.

¹³And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

¹³ شما مرا خواهید طلبید و مرا خواهید یافت، چون از صمیم قلب خواهان من بوده‌اید.

¹⁴And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you to be carried away captive.

¹⁴ آری، من می‌گویم شما مرا خواهید یافت و من شما را به سرزمین خودتان برمی‌گردانم. من شما را از تمام ممالک و از هر جایی که شما را پراکنده‌ کرده‌ام، جمع می‌کنم و شما را به همان جایی که قبل از اسارت زندگی می‌کردید، برمی‌گردانم.'

¹⁵Because ye have said, The LORD hath raised us up prophets in Babylon;

¹⁵ «شما می‌گویید خداوند به شما در بابل انبیایی داده است.

¹⁶Know that thus saith the LORD of the king that sitteth upon the throne of David, and of all the people that dwelleth in this city, and of your brethren that are not gone forth with you into captivity;

¹⁶ به سخنان خداوند دربارهٔ پادشاهی که امروز بر مملکتی حکومت می‌کند که روزی داوود حکمران آن بود، و به گفتار او دربارهٔ مردم این شهر که هنوز بستگان شما، یعنی آنهایی که به اسارت نرفته‌اند، در آن زندگی می‌کنند گوش دهید.

¹⁷Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will send upon them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs, that cannot be eaten, they are so evil.

¹⁷ خداوند متعال می‌گوید، 'من آنها را گرفتار جنگ و گرسنگی و بیماری خواهم کرد، من آنها را مثل انجیر گندیده‌ای خواهم ساخت که قابل خوردن نباشند.

¹⁸And I will persecute them with the sword, with the famine, and with the pestilence, and will deliver them to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a curse, and an astonishment, and an hissing, and a reproach, among all the nations whither I have driven them:

¹⁸ من با جنگ، گرسنگی و بیماری آنها را تعقیب خواهم کرد، به طوری که تمام ملّتها از مشاهدهٔ آنها به وحشت بیفتند. به هر کجا آنها را بفرستم مردم از آنچه بر آنها واقع شده است در ترس و وحشت فرو خواهند رفت. آنها مورد تمسخر دیگران واقع می‌شوند و اسم آنها را به عنوان نفرین و لعنت به کار خواهند برد.

¹⁹Because they have not hearkened to my words, saith the LORD, which I sent unto them by my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them; but ye would not hear, saith the LORD.

¹⁹ این بلاها بر سر آنها خواهد آمد چون به پیامهایی که من مکرراً توسط بندگانم -‌انبیا- برایشان فرستادم، توجهی نکردند. آنها نخواستند به سخنان من گوش دهند.

²⁰Hear ye therefore the word of the LORD, all ye of the captivity, whom I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon:

²⁰ شما -‌یعنی تمام کسانی‌که من شما را به بابل تبعید کردم- به آنچه من، خداوند، می‌گویم گوش دهید.'

²¹Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name; Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes;

²¹ «خداوند متعال، خدای اسرائیل دربارهٔ اخاب -‌پسر قولایا- و صدقیا -‌پسر معسیا- کسانی‌که در نام خداوند به شما دروغ می‌گویند، گفته است که او آنها را تسلیم نبوکدنصر پادشاه بابل می‌کند و او در برابر چشمان شما آنها را خواهد کشت.

²²And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, The LORD make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire;

²² هرگاه کسانی‌که از اورشلیم به اسارت به بابل برده شده بودند، بخواهند به کسی نفرین کنند خواهند گفت: 'خداوند با تو همان‌طور عمل کند که با صدقیا و اخاب کرد، یعنی کسانی‌که به وسیلهٔ پادشاه بابل زنده سوزانده شدند.'

²³Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours' wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith the LORD.

²³ سرنوشت آنها همین است. چون آنها مرتکب زنا شده‌اند و در نام من دروغ گفته‌اند. این خلاف ارادهٔ خداوند است. او می‌داند آنها چه کرده‌اند و شاهد کارهای آنهاست. خداوند چنین گفته است.»

²⁴Thus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying,

²⁴ خداوند متعال، خدای اسرائیل پیغامی به من داد برای شمعیای نحلامی، که نامه‌ای به امضای خودش به همهٔ مردم اورشلیم و همچنین به صَفَنیای کاهن -‌پسر معسیا- و به سایر کاهنان فرستاد. در نامهٔ خودش به صَفَنیا و شمعیا چنین نوشته بود:

²⁵Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, Because thou hast sent letters in thy name unto all the people that are at Jerusalem, and to Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest, and to all the priests, saying,

²⁵ «خداوند تو را به جای یهویاداع به کهانت رسانیده است و تو اکنون سرپرست امور معبد بزرگ هستی. وظیفهٔ توست که تمام دیوانگانی را که ادّعای نبوّت می‌کند، با زنجیر ببندی و به گردنشان قلّاده‌ای آهنین بیاندازی.

²⁶The LORD hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that ye should be officers in the house of the LORD, for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in prison, and in the stocks.

²⁶ تو چرا چنین کاری در مورد ارمیای عناتوتی که ادّعای نبوّت می‌کند، انجام ندادی؟

²⁷Now therefore why hast thou not reproved Jeremiah of Anathoth, which maketh himself a prophet to you?

²⁷ باید جلوی او گرفته شود چون او به مردم، در بابل گفته است که دوران اسارت آنها طولانی خواهد بود و آنها باید برای خودشان خانه بسازند و در آنجا زندگی کنند، در باغهایشان نهال بکارند و از میوهٔ آن بخورند.»

²⁸For therefore he sent unto us in Babylon, saying, This captivity is long: build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

²⁸ صَفَنیا نامه را برای من خواند

²⁹And Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

²⁹ و بعد از آن خداوند به من گفت، این پیام را به تمام اسیرانی که در بابل هستند در مورد شمعیا بفرستم: «من خداوند، شمعیا و فرزندانش را تنبیه خواهم کرد. من او را نفرستاده‌ام امّا او در مقابل چنین وانمود کرد که یک نبی است. او دیگر در بین شما فرزندانی نخواهد داشت. او آن‌قدر زنده نخواهد ماند تا خیر و برکاتی که برای قوم خود می‌آورم، ببیند؛ چون او آنها را برضد من برانگیخت. من، خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

³⁰Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah, saying,

³⁰ این پیام را به تمام اسیرانی که در بابل هستند در مورد شمعیا بفرستم: «من خداوند، شمعیا و فرزندانش را تنبیه خواهم کرد. من او را نفرستاده‌ام امّا او در مقابل چنین وانمود کرد که یک نبی است. او دیگر در بین شما فرزندانی نخواهد داشت. او آن‌قدر زنده نخواهد ماند تا خیر و برکاتی که برای قوم خود می‌آورم، ببیند؛ چون او آنها را برضد من برانگیخت. من، خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

³¹Send to all them of the captivity, saying, Thus saith the LORD concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite; Because that Shemaiah hath prophesied unto you, and I sent him not, and he caused you to trust in a lie:

³²Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the LORD; because he hath taught rebellion against the LORD.
