¹They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.

¹ خداوند می‌گوید: «اگر مردی زنش را طلاق دهد و زنش او را ترک کند وبا دیگری ازدواج کند، آن مرد نمی‌تواند زنش را دوباره بگیرد. چنین عملی باعث می‌شود، آن زمین آلوده شود. امّا تو ای اسرائیل، عشاق زیادی داشتی و اکنون می‌خواهی به نزد من بازگردی!

²Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and see where thou hast not been lien with. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.

² به بالای تپّه‌ها نگاه کن. آیا جایی هست که تو در آنجا مثل روسپی رفتار نکرده باشی؟ مثل یک عرب صحرانشین که در بیابان در انتظار شکار است، تو در کنار راه، منتظر عُشاق خود بودی. تو تمام این سرزمین را با روسپی‌گری و شرارت خود آلوده کرده‌ای.

³Therefore the showers have been withholden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadst a whore's forehead, thou refusedst to be ashamed.

³ به همین دلیل باران نباریده و رگبارهای بهاری نیامده است. تو مثل یک روسپی هستی و از آن شرم نداری.

⁴Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth?

⁴ «و اکنون به من می‌گویی: 'تو پدر من هستی، تو مرا از زمان طفولیّتم دوست داشتی.

⁵Will he reserve his anger for ever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest.

⁵ تو نسبت به من همیشه خشمگین نخواهی بود.' ای اسرائیل، این چیزی است که تو گفته‌ای، ولی از انجام هیچ‌نوع شرارتی خودداری نکردی.»

⁶The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot.

⁶ در زمان یوشیای پادشاه، خداوند به من گفت: «آیا می‌بینی اسرائیل -‌آن زن بی‌وفا- چه کرده است؟ او مرا ترک کرده و برفراز هر تپّه‌ و در پای تمام درختان سبز، مثل روسپی رفتار کرده است.

⁷And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.

⁷ فکر کردم بعد از تمام این کارها، او مطمئناً نزد من برمی‌گردد. امّا او برنگشت، و خواهر بی‌وفای او -‌یهودا- ناظر تمام کارهای او بود.

⁸And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.

⁸ یهودا همچنین دید که من اسرائیل را به‌خاطر اینکه مرا ترک کرده و مرتکب روسپی‌گری شده بود، طلاق دادم و به راه خودش فرستادم. امّا یهودا، خواهر بی‌وفای اسرائیل، هراسی نداشت. او هم روسپی شد

⁹And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks.

⁹ و اصلاً از آن شرمی نداشت. او سرزمین را آلوده ساخت و با پرستش سنگها و درختان مرتکب زنا شد.

¹⁰And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the LORD.

¹⁰ بعد از همهٔ اینها، یهودا خواهر بی‌وفای اسرائیل، فقط تظاهر کرد که به نزد من برمی‌گردد، ولی در عمل صادق نبود. من، خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

¹¹And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.

¹¹ آنگاه خداوند به من گفت که هرچند اسرائیل او را ترک کرده، با وجود این، او ثابت کرد که از خواهر بی‌وفایش -‌یهودا- بهتر است.

¹²Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the LORD; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.

¹² خداوند به من گفت بروم و به اسرائیل بگویم: «ای اسرائیل بی‌وفا نزد من بازگرد. من رحیم هستم و خشمگین نخواهم بود؛ خشم من برضد تو دایمی نخواهد بود.

¹³Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the LORD thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the LORD.

¹³ فقط بپذیر که خطاکاری و برضد خداوند، خدای خود شوریده‌ای. اعتراف کن که درپای درختان سبز، تو عشق خود را نثار خدایان بیگانه کرده‌ای و از دستورات من اطاعت ننموده‌ای. من، خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.

¹⁴Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

¹⁴ «ای قوم بی‌وفا بازگردید؛ شما به من تعلّق دارید. از هر شهری یکی از شما را، و از هر طایفه‌ای دو نفر را می‌گیرم و با خود به کوه صهیون خواهم آورد.

¹⁵And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

¹⁵ من به شما فرمانروایانی خواهم داد که مطیع من باشند، و آنها با حکمت و فهم بر شما حکومت خواهند کرد.

¹⁶And it shall come to pass, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, saith the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.

¹⁶ آنگاه، وقتی شما در این سرزمین کثیر شوید، مردم دیگر دربارهٔ صندوق پیمان من صحبتی نخواهند کرد. آنها دیگر نه دربارهٔ آن فکر می‌کنند و نه آن را به یاد می‌آورند. آنها دیگر نه احتیاجی به آن دارند، و نه می‌خواهند صندوق دیگری بسازند.

¹⁷At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.

¹⁷ وقتی زمان آن فرا رسد، اورشلیم به نام 'تخت خداوند' خوانده خواهد شد و تمام ملّتها در آنجا برای پرستش من جمع می‌شوند. آنها دیگر آنچه دلهای سخت و شریرشان به آنها می‌گوید، انجام نخواهند داد.

¹⁸In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.

¹⁸ اسرائیل با یهودا متّحد خواهد شد و آنها با هم از تبعید در کشوری در شمال به سرزمینی که من به اجداد شما به عنوان ملکی ابدی داده بودم، برخواهند گشت.»

¹⁹But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My father; and shalt not turn away from me.

¹⁹ خداوند می‌گوید: «ای اسرائیل، می‌خواستم تو را به فرزندی خود بپذیرم و سرزمینی سرسبز -‌زیباترین کشور جهان- را به تو بدهم. من می‌خواستم تو مرا پدر خود بخوانی، و دیگر هیچ‌گاه از من دور نشوی.

²⁰Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, saith the LORD.

²⁰ امّا مثل یک زن بی‌وفا، تو نسبت به من بی‌وفا بودی. من، خداوند چنین گفته‌ام.»

²¹A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God.

²¹ از فراز تپّه‌ها صدایی به گوش می‌‌رسد: این صدای قوم اسرائیل است که به‌خاطر گناهانی که مرتکب شده‌اند و به خاطر اینکه خداوند، خدای خودشان را فراموش کرده‌‌اند، گریه وزاری می‌کنند.

²²Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.

²² ای تمامی شما که از خداوند روی گردانیده‌اید، بازگردید. او بی‌وفایی شما را شفا خواهد داد. شما می‌گویید: «آری ما به سوی خداوند برمی‌گردیم چون او خدای ماست.

²³Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.

²³ پرستش بُتها در بالای تپّه‌ها برای ما هیچ فایده‌ای نداشته است. کمک برای اسرائیل فقط از جانب خداوند -‌خدای ما- می‌آید.

²⁴For shame hath devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.

²⁴ امّا پرستش بعل، خدای شرمساری، باعث شده که ما گلّه و رمه، پسران و دخترانمان، و همه‌چیزهای دیگری را که اجداد ما از زمانهای قدیم برای آن زحمت کشیده‌اند، از دست بدهیم. ما می‌بایست در شرم بخوابیم و رسوایی ما را بپوشاند. ما و اجداد ما، همیشه برضد خداوند، خدای ما گناه ورزیده، و هیچ‌وقت احکام او را اطاعت نکردیم.»

²⁵We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.

²⁵ ما می‌بایست در شرم بخوابیم و رسوایی ما را بپوشاند. ما و اجداد ما، همیشه برضد خداوند، خدای ما گناه ورزیده، و هیچ‌وقت احکام او را اطاعت نکردیم.»
