¹But Job answered and said,

¹ لطفاً به حرفهای من به دقّت گوش بدهید تا دل من تسلّی یابد.

²Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.

² به من فرصت بدهید تا حرفهای خود را بزنم و بعد اگر خواستید، مسخره‌ام کنید.

³Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

³ من از خدا شکایت دارم نه از انسان، به همین دلیل صبر و طاقتم را از دست داده‌ام.

⁴As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?

⁴ به من نگاه کنید و از تعجّب دست بر دهان بگذارید و ساکت باشید.

⁵Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.

⁵ وقتی مصیبت‌هایی را که بر سر من آمده است، به یاد می‌آ‌ورم، تمام بدنم از وحشت به لرزه می‌افتد.

⁶Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.

⁶ چرا مردم بدکار تا سن پیری زنده می‌مانند و به قدرت و جلال می‌رسند؟

⁷Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?

⁷ ایشان دارای فرزندان و نوه‌ها خواهند شد، و شاهد رشد ایشان خواهند بود.

⁸Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.

⁸ خانه‌هایشان از هرگونه ترس و خطر در امان است و خدا آنها را جزا نمی‌دهد.

⁹Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

⁹ تعداد گلّه‌هایشان افزایش می‌یابد و هیچ‌کدام آنها تلف نمی‌شود.

¹⁰Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.

¹⁰ کودکانشان بیرون می‌روند و مانند گوسفندان رقص و پایکوبی می‌کنند.

¹¹They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.

¹¹ با آواز دایره و رباب و نی، از خوشحالی سرود می‌خوانند.

¹²They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.

¹² بدکاران، عمر خود را در خوشبختی و کامرانی می‌گذرانند و با آسودگی و خاطرِ جمع از دنیا می‌روند.

¹³They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.

¹³ از خدا می‌خواهند که کاری به کارشان نداشته باشد و مایل نیستند که راه راست خدا را بشناسند.

¹⁴Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

¹⁴ می‌گویند: «قادر مطلق کیست که او را بندگی نماییم؟ چه فایده که پیش او دعا کنیم؟»

¹⁵What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

¹⁵ آنها ادّعا می‌کنند که سعادتشان نتیجهٔ سعی و کوشش خود آنهاست، امّا من با طرز فکرشان موافق نیستم.

¹⁶Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁶ آیا تا به حال چراغ شریران خاموش شده یا بلایی بر سرشان آمده است؟ آیا گاهی خدا آنها را از روی غضب خود جزا داده است؟

¹⁷How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.

¹⁷ یا مثل کاهی در برابر باد یا مانند خاک در برابر توفان پراکنده کرده است؟

¹⁸They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.

¹⁸ شما می‌گویید که خدا فرزندان گناهکاران را به عوض آنها مجازات می‌کند، امّا من می‌گویم که خدا باید خود گناهکار را جزا بدهد، تا بداند که خدا از گناه چشم نمی‌پوشد.

¹⁹God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.

¹⁹ خودشان باید نابودی خود را ببینند و از جام غضب قادر مطلق بنوشند.

²⁰His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

²⁰ آیا انسان پس از مرگ، زمانی که شمارهٔ ماههایش به سر آیند، نگران خانواده‌اش خواهد بود؟

²¹For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?

²¹ آیا کسی می‌تواند به خدایی که داور عالم است، چیزی بیاموزد؟

²²Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.

²² برخی از انسانها تا روز آخر زندگیشان از سلامتی برخوردارند؛ آنها با خوشحالی در آسودگی می‌میرند. آنها خوب تغذیه شده‌اند.

²³One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

²³ برخی هم در بدبختی، درحالی‌که لذّتی از زندگی نبرده‌اند، می‌میرند.

²⁴His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

²⁴ امّا همه یکسان به خاک می‌روند و خوراک کرمها می‌شوند.

²⁵And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.

²⁵ من افکار شما را می‌دانم و نقشه‌های کینه‌توزانه‌ای که برای من می‌کشید.

²⁶They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

²⁶ می‌گویید: «خانهٔ بزرگان و امیران چه شد و آنهایی که کارشان همیشه شرارت بود، کجا هستند؟»

²⁷Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.

²⁷ بروید از کسانی‌که دنیا را دیده‌اند بپرسید و شرح سفر آنها را بخوانید.

²⁸For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?

²⁸ آنگاه خواهید دانست که عموماً اشخاص بدکار در روز بد و مصیبت در امان می‌مانند و از غضب خدا نجات می‌یابند.

²⁹Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,

²⁹ کسی نیست که شرایران را متّهم کند و به سزای کارهایشان برساند.

³⁰That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

³⁰ وقتی می‌میرند با احترام خاصی به خاک سپرده می‌شوند و در آرامگاهشان نگهبان می‌گمارند.

³¹Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?

³¹ مردمِ بسیار جنازهٔ آنها را مشایعت می‌کنند، حتّی خاک هم آنها را با خوشی می‌پذیرد. پس شما چطور می‌توانید با سخنان پوچ و بی‌معنی‌تان مرا تسلّی بدهید؟ همهٔ جوابهای شما غلط و از حقیقت دورند.

³²Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.

³³The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.

³⁴How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?
