¹But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.

¹ هرچند خداوند به بنی‌اسرائیل فرموده بود که نباید از آنچه که حرام شده است برای خود به غنیمت بگیرند، امّا بنی‌اسرائیل مرتکب گناه شدند و از فرمان خدا سرپیچی کردند، چون عخان پسر کرمی‌، نوهٔ زبدی از خاندان زارح، که از طایفهٔ یهودا بود، از آنچه که حرام شده بود، برای خود غنیمت گرفت. پس خداوند بر بنی‌اسرائیل خشمگین شد.

²And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.

² یوشع چند نفر را از اریحا به شهر عای، که در شرق بیت‌ئیل و در نزدیکی بیت آون بود فرستاد تا اطّلاعاتی درباره آنجا به دست آورند. آنها پس از آنکه مأموریت خود را انجام دادند،

³And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labor thither; for they are but few.

³ نزد یوشع برگشته گفتند: «لازم نیست که همگی برای حمله بروند. چون عای شهر کوچكی است. فقط دو یا سه هزار نفر برای تسخیر آن شهر کافی است.»

⁴So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

⁴ پس در حدود سه هزار سرباز اسرائیلی رفتند و حمله را شروع کردند. امّا اسرائیلی‌ها شکست خورده، فرار کردند.

⁵And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

⁵ سربازان عای آنها را تا به دروازهٔ شباریم تعقیب کرده، سی و شش نفرشان را کشتند و مردم اسرائیل جرأت خود را از دست داده، به وحشت افتادند.

⁶And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.

⁶ یوشع و رهبران اسرائیل لباس خود را پاره کرده تا شام در برابر صندوق پیمان خداوند به خاک افتادند و خاک بر سر خود ریختند.

⁷And Joshua said, Alas, O LORD God, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!

⁷ پس یوشع گفت: «ای خداوند، چرا ما را از رود اردن عبور دادی و به اینجا آوردی تا به دست اموریان کشته شویم؟ ای کاش در آن طرف رود اردن می‌ماندیم.

⁸O LORD, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!

⁸ خداوندا، اکنون چاره چیست؟ مردم اسرائیل از پیش دشمنان فرار کرده‌اند.

⁹For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?

⁹ اگر کنعانیان و دیگر اقوام این سرزمین از این ماجرا باخبر شوند، ما را محاصره کرده، همه را نیست و نابود می‌‌کنند. آنگاه برای حفظ آبروی خود چه خواهی کرد.»

¹⁰And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

¹⁰ خداوند به یوشع فرمود: «برخیز، چرا به روی خاک افتاده‌ای؟

¹¹Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

¹¹ همهٔ مردم اسرائیل گناهکارند. ایشان به پیمانی که من با آنها بسته بودم، وفا نکردند. چیزهای حرام را که باید از بین می‌بردند، برای خود برداشتند. دزدی کردند، دروغ گفتند و آن را پنهان نمودند.

¹²Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

¹² به همین سبب است که مردم اسرائیل نمی‌توانند در برابر دشمن مقاومت کنند، بلکه فرار می‌کنند. چون به لعنت گرفتار شده‌اند. اینک اگر آن چیزهای حرام را از بین نبرید، من دیگر با شما نخواهم بود.

¹³Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.

¹³ پس برخیز و به مردم بگو که خود را پاک کنند و برای فردا آماده شوند و به ایشان بگو که خداوند خدای اسرائیل، چنین می‌‌فرماید: شما مردم اسرائیل چیزهای حرام را که باید از بین برده می‌‌شدند، برای خود نگه داشته‌اید و تا آن چیزها را دور نکنید، نمی‌توانید در برابر دشمن مقاومت نمایید.

¹⁴In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.

¹⁴ فردا صبح همهٔ طایفه‌ها حاضر شوند و طایفه‌ای را که خداوند نشان می‌دهد، با تمام خاندانهای خود پیش بیایند. آنگاه خاندانی که خداوند نشان می‌‌دهد، سپس اعضای آن خاندان جلو بیایند و خداوند کسی را که این کار را انجام داده است، معلوم می‌کند.

¹⁵And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

¹⁵ پس آن کسی‌که مال حرام را برداشته است، با همهٔ دارایی‌اش در آتش سوزانیده شود، چون آن شخص پیمان خداوند را شکسته و شرم بر بنی‌اسرائیل آورده است.»

¹⁶So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

¹⁶ پس یوشع روز بعد، صبح زود برخاسته، بنی‌اسرائیل را طایفه به طایفه جمع کرد و طایفهٔ یهودا مسئول شناخته شد.

¹⁷And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:

¹⁷ سپس هر خاندان یهودا پیش آمد و قرعه به نام خاندان زارح درآمد. آنگاه هر فامیل پیش آمد و فامیل زبدی را جدا کردند.

¹⁸And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

¹⁸ وقتی‌که مردان خانوادهٔ زبدی پیش آمدند، عخان پسر کرمی‌ نوهٔ زبدی از خاندان زارح از طایفهٔ یهودا، گناهکار شناخته شد.

¹⁹And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

¹⁹ آنگاه یوشع به عخان گفت: «فرزندم، خداوند خدای اسرائیل را تجلیل و تمجید کن و راست بگو که چه کرده‌ای. چیزی از من پنهان نکن.»

²⁰And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

²⁰ ‌ عخان جواب داد: «به راستی من در برابر خداوند خدای اسرائیل گناه کرده‌ام و کار بدی که از من سر زده است، این است:

²¹When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

²¹ ‌از بین اموال غنیمت، یک ردای زیبای بابلی، صد تکه نقره و یک شمش طلا، به وزن پنجاه تکه نقره دیدم و از روی طمع آنها را برداشتم و در چادر خود، در زیر خاک پنهان کرده‌ام. و نقره زیر همه قرار دارد.»

²²So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

²² یوشع چند نفر را فرستاد و آنها به طرف چادر دویدند و دیدند که به راستی همهٔ چیزها را در چادر درحالی‌که نقره در زیر همه قرار داشت، پنهان کرده بود.

²³And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.

²³ آنها را از چادر نزد یوشع و مردم اسرائیل آوردند و به حضور خداوند قرار دادند.

²⁴And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

²⁴ پس یوشع همراه همهٔ مردم اسرائیل، عخان پسر زارح را با نقره، ردا، میلهٔ طلا، پسران، دختران، گاوها، الاغان، گوسفندان، چادر و همهٔ دارایی‌اش گرفته در دشت عخور آوردند.

²⁵And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

²⁵ یوشع به عخان گفت: «چرا این‌همه مصیبت را بر سر ما آوردی؟ حالا خداوند، تو را به مصیبت گرفتار می‌‌کند!» آنگاه همگی عخان را همراه با فامیلش سنگسار کردند و بعد همه را در آتش سوزاندند. سپس تودهٔ بزرگی از سنگ برروی جنازهٔ او برپا کردند که تا به امروز باقی است. به این ترتیب خشم خداوند فرو نشست. ازاین‌رو آنجا را دشت عخور نامیدند.

²⁶And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

²⁶ سپس تودهٔ بزرگی از سنگ برروی جنازهٔ او برپا کردند که تا به امروز باقی است. به این ترتیب خشم خداوند فرو نشست. ازاین‌رو آنجا را دشت عخور نامیدند.
