¹And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:

¹ خداوند به یوشع فرمود: «همهٔ جنگجویان را گرفته بدون ترس و تشویش به عای برو. من پادشاه عای، مردم شهر و سرزمین او را به دست تو داده‌ام.

²And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.

² همان رفتاری که با اریحا و پادشاه آن کردی، با عای و پادشاهش نیز بکن، امّا این بار به تو اجازه می‌دهم که همهٔ اموال و چارپایان آنها را که به غنیمت می‌گیری، برای خودتان نگه دارید. به صورت ناگهانی و از پشت شهر حمله کنید.»

³So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valor, and sent them away by night.

³ پس یوشع و تمام لشکریان او آماده حرکت به طرف عای شدند. پس یوشع سی هزار سرباز دلیر را انتخاب کرد و هنگام شب آنها را به آنجا فرستاد و گفت:

⁴And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:

⁴ «برای شبیخون در یک طرف شهر پنهان شوید، امّا نه بسیار دور از آن، و برای حملهٔ ناگهانی آماده باشید.

⁵And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,

⁵ من با یک گروه سرباز به شهر حمله می‌کنم. وقتی‌که لشکریان عای، مانند دفعهٔ گذشته به مقابلهٔ ما آمدند، ما عقب‌نشینی می‌‌کنیم. آنها تصوّر می‌کنند که ما فرار کرده‌ایم، پس ما را تعقیب خواهند نمود. چون از شهر به فاصله زیادی دور شدند،

⁶(For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.

⁶ آنگاه شما از کمینگاه خود بیرون آمده، شهر را تصرّف کنید، زیرا خداوند خدای شما، آن را به دست شما تسلیم خواهد نمود.

⁷Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.

⁷ وقتی شهر را تصرّف کردید، طبق فرمان خداوند آن را آتش بزنید. این دستور من می‌‌باشد.»

⁸And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.

⁸ پس آنها هنگام شب به طرف کمینگاه خود حرکت کردند و در جایی که بین غرب عای و بیت‌ئیل بود، پنهان شدند. یوشع شب را در اردوگاه خود به سر برد.

⁹Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.

⁹ صبح روز بعد، یوشع برخاست و سربازان خود را آماده کرد و با رهبران بنی‌اسرائیل رهسپار عای شدند.

¹⁰And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

¹⁰ آنها در شمال شهر در نزدیکی درّه‌ای اردو زدند.

¹¹And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.

¹¹ در آن شب یک لشکر پنج هزار نفری دیگر را فرستاد تا در غرب شهر، بین عای و بیت‌ئیل برای کمک به قشون اصلی کمین کنند و خودش شب را در دشت به سر برد.

¹²And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

¹² وقتی پادشاه عای لشکر یوشع را دید، فوراً دست به کار شد و به همراه لشکریان خود برای حمله به بنی‌اسرائیل به روبه‌روی دشت اردن رفت. غافل از اینکه یک لشکر دیگر بنی‌اسرائیل در عقب شهر کمین کرده‌اند.

¹³And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

¹³ یوشع و مردان جنگی او، چنان وانمود کردند که از دست آنها شکست خورده، به طرف بیابان فرار می‌‌کنند.

¹⁴And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.

¹⁴ پس به تمام سربازانی که در شهر بودند، دستور داده شد که به تعقیب بنی‌اسرائیل بروند. به این ترتیب آنها از شهر دور شدند،

¹⁵And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

¹⁵ به طوری که هیچ سربازی در بیت‌ئیل و یا عای باقی نماند و دروازه‌های شهر را نیز بازگذاشتند و به تعقیب بنی‌اسرائیل رفتند.

¹⁶And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

¹⁶ آنگاه خداوند به یوشع گفت: «نیزه‌ات را به طرف عای دراز کن، زیرا من آن را به دست تو می‌‌دهم.» یوشع چنان کرد.

¹⁷And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.

¹⁷ همین که دست یوشع بلند شد، لشکر بنی‌اسرائیل که در کمینگاه بودند، فوراً به شهر حمله برده، آن را تسخیر کردند و آتش زدند.

¹⁸And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.

¹⁸ چون مردان عای به پشت سر خود نگاه کردند، دیدند که دود از شهر به طرف آسمان بالا می‌‌رود و راه فرار از هر سو به روی ایشان بسته شده است، زیرا مردانی که به بیابان فرار کرده بودند، برگشته و به آنهایی که در تعقیبشان بودند، حمله کرده بودند.

¹⁹And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.

¹⁹ وقتی یوشع و همراهانش دود را دیدند و فهمیدند که سربازانی که در کمین بودند، شهر را تسخیر کرده‌اند، برگشتند و تمام مردان عای را به قتل رساندند.

²⁰And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.

²⁰ مردان اسرائیل که در شهر بودند، بیرون آمدند و از پشت سر به کشتار دشمن شروع کردند، به طوری که هیچ‌کس نتوانست فرار کند، و همه کشته شدند.

²¹And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.

²¹ امّا پادشاه عای را زنده دستگیر کرده، به حضور یوشع آوردند.

²²And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

²² بعد از آنکه مردان بنی‌اسرائیل تمام کسانی را که در خارج شهر بودند کشتند، به داخل شهر رفتند و کسانی را که زنده مانده بودند، با شمشیر هلاک کردند.

²³And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.

²³ در همان روز تمام ساکنان عای که در حدود دوازده هزار زن و مرد بودند، کشته شدند.

²⁴And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.

²⁴ زیرا یوشع نیزهٔ خود را به طرف عای بالا گرفته بود و تا زمانی که تمام ساکنان آن نابود نشده بودند، پایین نیاورد.

²⁵And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

²⁵ پس بنی‌اسرائیل مطابق دستور خداوند به یوشع، فقط چارپایان و اموال آنان را برای خود به غنیمت گرفتند.

²⁶For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

²⁶ یوشع عای را آتش زد و به خاکستر تبدیل نمود و تا امروز به همان حال باقی است.

²⁷Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.

²⁷ پادشاه عای را به دار آویختند و جسد او تا شام آویزان ماند. هنگام غروب آفتاب، یوشع دستور داد، جسد او را از دار پایین بیاورند و نزد دروازهٔ ورودی شهر بیندازند و بر روی آن یک تودهٔ بزرگ سنگ انباشتند که هنوز هم دیده می‌شود.

²⁸And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.

²⁸ بعد یوشع قربانگاهی برای خداوند خدای اسرائیل بر کوه عیبال ساخت.

²⁹And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcass down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.

²⁹ همان‌طور که موسی خادم خداوند، در کتاب تورات به مردم اسرائیل دستور داده بود، قربانگاهی از سنگهای نتراشیده، که ابزار کارگران به آنها نخورده بود ساختند و مردم در آنجا قربانی‌های سوختنی و سلامتی برای خداوند تقدیم کردند.

³⁰Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,

³⁰ یوشع در همان‌جا در حضور بنی‌اسرائیل یک نسخه تورات موسی را بر لوح‌های سنگی نوشت.

³¹As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.

³¹ تمام بنی‌اسرائیل و رهبران، صاحب منصبان، داوران و همچنین غریبانی که در بین آنها بودند، به دو دسته تقسیم شده، مقابل هم ایستادند. نیمی‌ در پایین کوه جرزیم و نیم دیگر آنها در پایین کوه عیبال ایستادند. بین آن دو دسته، کاهنان و صندوق پیمان خداوند قرار داشتند و منتظر بودند که دعای برکت خوانده شود. این مراسم بر حسب دستوری بود که موسی خادم خداوند، سالها پیش داده بود.

³²And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

³² بعد یوشع از روی کتاب تورات، دعای برکت و نفرین را برای ایشان خواند. تمام احکامی‌ که موسی نوشته بود، از ابتدا تا انتها برای بنی‌اسرائیل و زنان و اطفال و بیگانگانی که در میانشان ساکن بودند، خوانده شد.

³³And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.

³³ تمام احکامی‌ که موسی نوشته بود، از ابتدا تا انتها برای بنی‌اسرائیل و زنان و اطفال و بیگانگانی که در میانشان ساکن بودند، خوانده شد.

³⁴And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

³⁵There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
