¹Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹ خداوند متعال می‌فرماید: «من قاصد خود را می‌فرستم تا راه را برای من آماده سازد. سپس خداوندی که منتظرش هستید، ناگهان به معبد بزرگ خود خواهد آمد. آن نبی‌ای که مشتاق دیدارش هستید، می‌آید و پیمان مرا به شما اعلام می‌کند.»

²But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

² امّا چه کسی می‌تواند طاقت آن روز را داشته باشد؟ وقتی او می‌آید، کیست که بتواند با او روبه‌رو شود؟ او مانند آتشی است که فلز را تصفیه می‌کند و همچون صابون گازری است که همه‌چیز را پاک می‌سازد.

³And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

³ او مانند کسی‌که نقره را صاف می‌کند، کاهنان را مانند طلا و نقره پاک می‌سازد تا آنها با دل صاف هدایای خود را به خداوند تقدیم کنند.

⁴Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years.

⁴ آنگاه هدایای مردم یهودا و اورشلیم، مانند گذشته، مورد پسند خداوند واقع خواهند شد.

⁵And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

⁵ خداوند متعال می‌فرماید: «آنگاه من برای داوری نزد شما خواهم آمد. برضد جادوگران، زناکاران، کسانی‌که قسم ناحق می‌خورند، آنهایی که در مُزد کارگران تقلّب می‌کنند، اشخاصی که در حق بیوه زنان و یتیمان و بیگانگان ظلم می‌نمایند و از من نمی‌‌ترسند، شهادت خواهم داد.»

⁶For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

⁶ من خداوند تغییر ناپذیر هستم. به همین دلیل است که شما ای نسل یعقوب تا به حال از بین نرفته‌اید.

⁷Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?

⁷ هرچند شما هم مانند نیاکانتان از احکام من سرپیچی کرده و آنها را بجا نیاورده‌اید، ولی اکنون وقت آن است که به سوی من بازگردید تا شما را بیامرزم. شما می‌پرسید: «چگونه به سوی تو بازگردیم؟»

⁸Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.

⁸ «آیا درست است که کسی خدا را فریب دهد؟ نه، امّا شما مرا فریب داده‌اید.» می‌گویید: «ما چگونه تو را فریب داده‌ایم؟» در پرداخت ده یک‌ها و هدایایی که برای من می‌آورید.

⁹Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.

⁹ همهٔ شما نفرین شده‌اید، زیرا مرا فریب می‌دهید.

¹⁰Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

¹⁰ ده‌یک‌ها را به طور کامل به خانهٔ من بیاورید تا خوراک کافی موجود باشد. به این ترتیب مرا امتحان کنید و ببینید که چطور روزنه‌های آسمان را می‌گشایم و شما را آن‌چنان برکت خواهم داد که گنجایش آن را نداشته باشید.

¹¹And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹¹ ‌خداوند متعال می‌فرماید: «نمی‌گذارم حشرات و آفات محصول شما را از بین ببرند و انگور تاکستانهای شما را نابود سازند.

¹²And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹² اقوام دیگر شما را خوشبخت می‌خوانند زیرا سرزمین شما، سرزمین حاصلخیزی خواهد بود.»

¹³Your words have been stout against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee?

¹³ خداوند می‌فرماید: «شما برضد من سخنان زننده‌ای گفته‌اید.» ولی شما می‌پرسید: «ما برضد تو چه گفته‌ایم؟»

¹⁴Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts?

¹⁴ شما گفته‌اید: «خدمت به خدا بی‌فایده است. چرا باید دستورات او را انجام دهیم و یا چرا در درگاه خداوند متعال از کارهای خود اظهار پشیمانی کنیم؟

¹⁵And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.

¹⁵ ببینید که مردم خود‌خواه و متکبّر چطور خوشبخت زندگی می‌کنند، شریران کامیاب می‌شوند و حتّی خدا را امتحان می‌کنند و از مجازات رهایی می‌یابند.»

¹⁶Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.

¹⁶ آنگاه کسانی‌که ترس خداوند را داشتند با یکدیگر گفت‌وگو نمودند و خداوند به سخنان آنها گوش داد و همهٔ آنچه را که گفتند شنید. پس در کتاب یادگاری، اسم کسانی‌که از خداوند می‌ترسیدند و نام او را گرامی می‌داشتند، در حضور خداوند ثبت شد.

¹⁷And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.

¹⁷ خداوند متعال می‌فرماید: «در آن روز معیّن، ایشان قوم خاص من می‌باشند. من آنان را خواهم بخشید همچون پدری که پسر مطیع خود را می‌بخشد. آنگاه بار دیگر قوم من تفاوت بین نیکوکاران و بدکاران و نیز تفاوت بین آنانی که خدا را خدمت می‌کنند و آنانی را که خدمت نمی‌کنند، خواهند دید.»

¹⁸Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

¹⁸ آنگاه بار دیگر قوم من تفاوت بین نیکوکاران و بدکاران و نیز تفاوت بین آنانی که خدا را خدمت می‌کنند و آنانی را که خدمت نمی‌کنند، خواهند دید.»
