¹But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.

¹ هنگامی‌که سنبلط شنید ما یهودیان بازسازی دیوار را آغاز کرده‌ایم، بسیار خشمگین شد و ما را مورد تمسخر قرار داد.

²And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?

² در برابر همراهان و سپاهیان سامری گفت: «این یهودیان ناتوان چه می‌کنند؟ آیا درنظر دارند شهر را بازسازی کنند؟ آیا می‌اندیشند که با قربانی کردن می‌توانند کار را یک روزه به پایان برسانند؟ آیا می‌توانند از این توده سنگهای سوخته، سنگهایی برای بنا پیدا کنند؟»

³Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.

³ طوبیا در کنار او ایستاده بود و گفت: «چه دیوار سنگی خواهند ساخت؟ اگر روباهی از آن بالا رود فرو خواهد ریخت!»

⁴Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:

⁴ آنگاه دعا کردم: «ای خدا بشنو که چگونه ما را مسخره می‌کنند! بگذار آنچه به ما می‌گویند بر سر خودشان بیاید. بگذار تا آنچه دارند تاراج شود و خودشان به سرزمین بیگانه به اسارت برده شوند.

⁵And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders.

⁵ شرارت ایشان را نبخش و گناهانشان را فراموش نکن، زیرا به ما سازندگان دیوار اهانت کرده‌اند.»

⁶So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

⁶ پس ما به بازسازی دیوار ادامه دادیم و بزودی نصف ارتفاع دیوار ساخته شد، زیرا مردم با دل و جان کار می‌کردند.

⁷But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

⁷ هنگامی‌که سنبلط، طوبیا، اعراب‌، عمونیان و اشدودیان شنیدند که ما در بازسازی دیوار اورشلیم پیشرفت کرده‌ایم و شکافهای آن بسته می‌شود، بسیار خشمگین شدند.

⁸And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

⁸ پس با هم نقشه کشیدند که برضد اورشلیم بجنگند و اغتشاش به پا کنند،

⁹Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

⁹ امّا ما به درگاه خدایمان دعا کردیم و روز و شب علیه آنان نگهبانانی قرار دادیم.

¹⁰And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.

¹⁰ مردم یهودا زمزمه می‌کردند: «ما از حمل بارها ضعیف شده‌ایم خرده‌ سنگهای زیادی برای بیرون بردن وجود دارد. ما امروز چگونه می‌توانیم دیوار را بنا کنیم؟»

¹¹And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.

¹¹ دشمنان ما با خود می‌اندیشیدند: «پیش از اینکه بدانند و ببینند، به میان ایشان خواهیم رفت و ایشان را می‌کشیم و کار ساختن دیوار نیمه تمام خواهد ماند.»

¹²And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.

¹² بارها یهودیانی که در میان دشمنان زندگی می‌کردند، آمدند و در مورد نقشه‌های ایشان برضد ما هشدار دادند.

¹³Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

¹³ بنابراین مردم را با شمشیر، نیزه و کمان مسلّح کردم و بر طبق خاندانشان در پشت قسمت‌های ناتمام دیوار به نگهبانی گماشتم.

¹⁴And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the LORD, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.

¹⁴ پس از اینکه اوضاع را بررسی کردم، برخاستم و به بزرگان، سروران و قوم گفتم: «از ایشان مترسید. خداوند را به یاد آورید که بزرگ و مهیب است و برای خویشاوندان، فرزندان، همسران و خانه‌هایتان بجنگید.»

¹⁵And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

¹⁵ دشمنان ما شنیدند که از نقشه‌های ایشان آگاه شده‌ایم و دریافتند که خدا نقشه‌هایشان را با شکست روبه‌رو کرده است، سپس همهٔ ما به انجام کارهای خود بازگشتیم.

¹⁶And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

¹⁶ از آن روز به بعد نیمی از مردان بازسازی می‌کردند و نیمی دیگر مسلّح به نیزه، سپر، کمان و زره، نگهبانی می‌دادند و رهبران از مردمی که دیوار را می‌ساختند، کاملاً پشتیبانی می‌کردند.

¹⁷They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

¹⁷ حتّی کسانی‌که مصالح ساختمانی حمل می‌کردند، با یک دست کار می‌کردند و به دست دیگر سلاح داشتند.

¹⁸For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

¹⁸ هرکس که مشغول ساختن بود، شمشیری به کمر بسته بود. مردی که مسئول به صدا درآوردن شیپور خطر بود، در کنار من ایستاده بود.

¹⁹And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.

¹⁹ من به مردم، سران و رهبران ایشان گفتم: «کار بسیار گسترده است و ما در روی دیوار از یکدیگر دور هستیم.

²⁰In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.

²⁰ هر موقع صدای شیپور را شنیدید به آنجا بیایید، خدایمان برای ما جنگ خواهد کرد.»

²¹So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.

²¹ هر روز از سحرگاه تا شبانگاه هنگامی‌که ستاره‌ها بیرون می‌آمدند، نیمی از مردان کار می‌کردند و نیمی دیگر با نیزه نگهبانی می‌دادند.

²²Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.

²² در این هنگام به تمام مردانی که مسئولیّتی داشتند گفتم که هرکس با کارگرانش شب را در اورشلیم بماند بنابراین ما توانستیم شهر را در شب نگهبانی کنیم و هنگام روز کار کنیم. من، همراهان، کارگران و محافظین من حتّی در شب، لباس خود را از تن در نیاوردیم و هرکدام اسلحهٔ خود را در دست داشتیم.

²³So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.

²³ من، همراهان، کارگران و محافظین من حتّی در شب، لباس خود را از تن در نیاوردیم و هرکدام اسلحهٔ خود را در دست داشتیم.
