¹And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

¹ پس از چندی، بسیاری از مردم، زن و مرد از یهودیان دیگر شکایت کردند.

²For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.

² بعضی افراد می‌گفتند: «ما خانوادهٔ بزرگی هستیم و برای زنده ماندن به غلاّت نیازمندیم.»

³Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.

³ دیگران گفتند: «ما مجبور شدیم کشتزارها، تاکستانها و خانه‌هایمان را گرو بگذاریم که قدری غلّه بگیریم تا از گرسنگی نابود نشویم.»

⁴There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.

⁴ گروهی دیگر گفتند: «ما برای پرداخت مالیاتِ کشتزارها و تاکستانها به شاهنشاه، وام گرفته‌ایم.

⁵Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

⁵ ما نیز چون دیگر یهودیان از یک نژاد هستیم. آیا فرزندان ما به خوبیِ فرزندان ایشان نیستند؟ ما مجبور هستیم فرزندانمان را به بردگی بفروشیم. گروهی از دختران ما قبلاً به بردگی فروخته شده‌اند. ما بیچاره شده‌ایم زیرا کشتزارها و تاکستانهای ما را از ما گرفته‌اند.»

⁶And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

⁶ هنگامی‌که این شکایات را شنیدم خشمگین شدم.

⁷Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.

⁷ با خود اندیشیدم و سپس رهبران و بزرگان قوم را سرزنش کردم و به ایشان گفتم: «شما برادران خود را مورد ستم قرار داده‌اید!» پس برای دادرسی به این موضوع گردهمآیی عمومی اعلام کردم.

⁸And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.

⁸ و گفتم: «تا آنجا که توانسته‌ایم، خویشاوندان یهودی خود را که خودشان را به بردگی به بیگانگان فروخته بودند بازخرید می‌کردیم. اکنون شما خویشاوندان خود را مجبور می‌کنید که خودشان را به شما بفروشند، یعنی به قوم خودشان!» رهبران خاموش ماندند و حرفی برای گفتن نیافتند.

⁹Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?

⁹ سپس گفتم: «کاری که انجام می‌دهید درست نیست. آیا نباید با خداترسی گام بردارید تا مورد تمسخر بیگانگان یعنی دشمنان ما قرار نگیرید؟

¹⁰I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.

¹⁰ من، همراهانم و خادمانم نیز به مردم پول و غلاّت قرض داده‌ایم. حال بیایید از بازپرداخت وامهایمان صرف‌نظر کنیم.

¹¹Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.

¹¹ همهٔ بدهکاریهای ایشان را از پول یا غلّه یا شراب یا روغن زیتون ببخشید و کشتزارها، تاکستانها، باغهای زیتون و خانه‌های آنان را فوراً بازگردانید.»

¹²Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

¹² رهبران پاسخ دادند: «ما آنچه را تو گفتی انجام خواهیم داد، اموال را باز می‌گردانیم و وامها را می‌بخشیم.» آنگاه کاهنان را فراخواندم و رهبران را مجبور کردم که در حضور ایشان سوگند یاد کنند که به وعدهٔ خود وفا نمایند.

¹³Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

¹³ آنگاه شالی را که به کمر بسته بودم باز کردم و آن را تکان دادم و گفتم: «خدا هر کسی را که به وعدهٔ خود عمل نکند چنین خواهد تکانید، خانه‌ها و تمام دارایی او را خواهد گرفت و چیزی برای او باقی نخواهد گذاشت.» همهٔ کسانی‌که آنجا بودند آمین گفتند و خداوند را ستایش کردند و رهبران پیمان خود را نگاه داشتند.

¹⁴Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

¹⁴ در مدّت دوازده سالی که من فرماندار یهودا بودم، یعنی از سال بیستم تا سال سی و دوم سلطنت اردشیر شاهنشاه پارس، نه من و نه خویشاوندانم از سهم غذایی که به عنوان فرماندار حق خوردن آن را داشتیم، نخوردیم.

¹⁵But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

¹⁵ هر فرمانداری که قبل از من آمده بود، باری بر مردم بود و از ایشان روزانه چهل تکهٔ نقره به‌علاوهٔ غذا و شراب می‌گرفت. حتّی مأموران آنها به ایشان ستم می‌کردند. امّا من به‌خاطر ترس از خدا چنین عمل نکردم.

¹⁶Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

¹⁶ من تمام نیروی خود را صرف ساختن دیوار کردم و هیچ زمینی نخریدم و همهٔ کارکنان من برای ساختن دیوار به من پیوستند.

¹⁷Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.

¹⁷ صد و پنجاه نفر از یهودیان و رهبران آنها و همچنین کسانی‌که از ملل همسایه می‌آمدند، بر سر سفرهٔ من غذا می‌خوردند.

¹⁸Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.

¹⁸ هر روز یک گاو نر، شش رأس از بهترین گوسفندان و تعداد زیادی مرغ و ده روز یک‌بار مقدار فراوانی شراب تازه تهیّه می‌کردم. با وجود این هرگز از مردم نخواستم که سهمیهٔ مخصوصی را که به فرمانروایان تعلّق داشت به من بدهند، زیرا بار مردم به قدر کافی سنگین بود. ای خدا نزد تو دعا می‌کنم که تمامی کارهایی را که برای این قوم انجام داده‌ام، به نیکی برای من به یاد آوری.

¹⁹Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.

¹⁹ ای خدا نزد تو دعا می‌کنم که تمامی کارهایی را که برای این قوم انجام داده‌ام، به نیکی برای من به یاد آوری.
