¹Now it came to pass when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)

¹ چون سنبلط، طوبیا، جشم عرب و سایر دشمنان ما شنیدند که دیوارها را بازسازی کرده‌ایم و هیچ شکافی در آن باقی نمانده است، با اینکه درهای دروازه‌هایش را هنوز برپا نساخته بودیم،

²That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.

² سنبلط و جشم پیام فرستادند و پیشنهاد کردند که: «بیا تا در یکی از روستاهای دشت اونو ملاقات کنیم.» امّا ایشان قصد داشتند که به من صدمه بزنند.

³And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?

³ پس قاصدانی فرستادم که به آنها بگویند: «من مشغول انجام کار مهمی هستم و نمی‌توانم به آنجا بیایم. چرا باید کار به‌خاطر ملاقات من با شما متوقّف شود؟»

⁴Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.

⁴ چهار مرتبه این پیغام را برای من فرستادند و هر بار همان پاسخ را به آنان دادم.

⁵Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;

⁵ سنبلط بار پنجم خادم خود را با نامهٔ سرگشاده‌ای نزد من فرستاد،

⁶Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.

⁶ در آن نوشته شده بود: «جشم به من می‌گوید که شایعه‌ای در میان ملل همسایه وجود دارد که تو و یهودیان قصد شورش دارید و به همین دلیل دیوار را بنا می‌کنید. او همچنین می‌گوید تو قصد داری که خود را پادشاه بسازی

⁷And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.

⁷ و انبیایی در اورشلیم گمارده‌ای که در اورشلیم ندا کنند که تو پادشاه یهود هستی و این سخنان حتماً به شاهنشاه گزارش خواهد شد، پس بیا تا با هم در این باره مشورت کنیم.»

⁸Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.

⁸ من برای او پاسخ فرستادم: «هیچ‌یک از سخنانی که می‌گویی حقیقت ندارد، این سخنان زاییدهٔ افکار توست.»

⁹For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.

⁹ ایشان همگی می‌خواستند ما را بترسانند تا ما کار را متوقّف کنیم. من دعا کردم: «اکنون ای خدا مرا استوار ساز.»

¹⁰Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.

¹⁰ در همان ایّام روزی به خانهٔ شمعیا پسر دلایا و نوهٔ مهیطبئیل رفتم، او نمی‌توانست خانهٔ خود را ترک کند. او به من گفت: «تو و من باید برویم در مکان مقدّسِ معبد بزرگ پنهان شویم و درها را قفل کنیم، زیرا ایشان خواهند آمد تا تو را بکشند. شامگاه خواهند آمد تا تو را بکشند.»

¹¹And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.

¹¹ من پاسخ دادم: «من آن آدمی نیستم که دویده خود را پنهان سازم. آیا تو فکر می‌کنی که من با پنهان شدن در معبد بزرگ خود را نجات خواهم داد؟ من چنین کاری نخواهم کرد.»

¹²And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

¹² وقتی دربارهٔ آن فکر می‌‌کردم فهمیدم که خدا با شمعیا سخن نگفته است بلکه طوبیا و سنبلط به او رشوه داده بودند تا برضد من نبوّت کند.

¹³Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

¹³ آنان او را خریده بودند که مرا بترساند و به گناه بکشاند تا مرا بدنام سازند و مورد تمسخر قرار دهند.

¹⁴My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.

¹⁴ من دعا کردم: «خدایا طوبیا و سنبلط را به‌خاطر هر آنچه انجام داده‌اند به یاد آور و آنان را تنبیه کن. همچنین آن زن نوعدیه و سایر انبیایی را که می‌خواهند مرا بترسانند، به‌یاد‌آور.»

¹⁵So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.

¹⁵ بازسازی دیوار در روز بیست و پنجم ماه ایلول پس از پنجاه و دو روز پایان یافت.

¹⁶And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.

¹⁶ هنگامی‌که دشمنان ما در ملّتهای همسایه این خبر را شنیدند، هراسان و شرمسار شدند، چون دانستند این کار با کمک خدا انجام پذیرفته است.

¹⁷Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.

¹⁷ در آن روزها رهبران یهودی و طوبیا مشغول ‌نامه‌نگاری با یکدیگر بودند.

¹⁸For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.

¹⁸ بسیاری از ساکنان یهودا از او پشتیبانی می‌کردند، زیرا پدر زن او شکنیا پسر آرح بود و همچنین پسرش یهوحانان با دختر مشلام پسر برکیا ازدواج کرده بود. مردم از تمام کارهای نیکی که طوبیا انجام داده بود، برای من تعریف می‌کردند و هرچه را که من می‌گفتم به گوش او می‌رساندند. طوبیا کوشید تا با فرستادن نامه‌های پیاپی مرا هراسان سازد.

¹⁹Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.

¹⁹ مردم از تمام کارهای نیکی که طوبیا انجام داده بود، برای من تعریف می‌کردند و هرچه را که من می‌گفتم به گوش او می‌رساندند. طوبیا کوشید تا با فرستادن نامه‌های پیاپی مرا هراسان سازد.
