¹The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

¹ امثال سلیمان، پسر داوود، پادشاه ‌اسرائیل.

²To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

² این مثلها به شما کمک می‌کنند تا حکمت و نصیحت مفید را تشخیص داده و سخنان پر معنی را بفهمید.

³To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

³ آنها می‌توانند به شما یاد دهند که چگونه عاقلانه و با عدالت و انصاف زندگی کنید.

⁴To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

⁴ آنها می‌توانند به اشخاص بی‌تجربه، ذکاوت ببخشند و به جوانان، کاردانی.

⁵A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

⁵ این مثلها حتّی می‌توانند حکمت دانایان را افزون نموده و تحصیل‌کردگان را راهنمایی نمایند تا بتوانند اسرار پیچیدهٔ مثلها و معماهای دانایان را درک نمایند.

⁶To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

⁶ ترس از خداوند، ابتدای حکمت است. امّا مردم احمق توجهی به آن نمی‌نمایند و علم را رد می‌کنند.

⁷The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

⁷ ای فرزند من، نصیحت پدر خود را بشنو و تعالیم مادرت را فراموش مکن.

⁸My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

⁸ تعالیم و نصایح آنها مانند تاج عزّت و جلال بر سرت و گردنبند زیبایی و شکوه بر گردنت خواهند بود.

⁹For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

⁹ ای فرزند من، وقتی گناهکاران کوشش می‌کنند تو را فریب دهند، تسلیم نشو.

¹⁰My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

¹⁰ اگر بگویند: «بیا با هم متّحد شویم تا یک نفر را بکشیم و کمین کنیم تا خون بی‌گناهان را بریزیم،

¹¹If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:

¹¹ بیا تا مثل قبر آنها را زنده‌زنده ببلعیم و مانند مرگ بر سر آنها نازل شویم،

¹²Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

¹² هرگونه اموال گرانبها به دست می‌آوریم و خانه‌های خود را از اموال دزدی پر می‌کنیم.

¹³We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:

¹³ بیا جزو دستهٔ ما باش تا هرچه بدزدیم با هم قسمت کنیم.»

¹⁴Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:

¹⁴ ای فرزند من، با آنها همراه مشو و از ایشان دوری کن.

¹⁵My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

¹⁵ چون پاهای ایشان به سوی شرارت می‌دود و برای ریختن خون می‌شتابند.

¹⁶For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

¹⁶ گذاشتن دام در مقابل چشمان پرنده کار بیهوده‌ای است.

¹⁷Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

¹⁷ امّا این قبیل افراد، برای خود دام می‌گسترانند، دامی که در آن هلاک خواهند شد.

¹⁸And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.

¹⁸ دزدی، عاقبت باعث هلاکت دزد می‌شود. عاقبت کسانی‌که با قتل و غارت زندگی می‌کنند، مرگ و نابودی است.

¹⁹So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

¹⁹ حکمت در کوچه‌ها و در خیابانها با صدای بلند، همه را صدا می‌زند.

²⁰Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

²⁰ در دروازهٔ شهرها و هر جایی که مردم دور هم جمع می‌شوند فریاد می‌کند:

²¹She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

²¹ «ای مردم احمق تا کی می‌خواهید احمق باشید؟ تا کی می‌خواهید از مسخره کردن دانایی لذّت ببرید؟ آیا شما هرگز خواهید آموخت؟

²²How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

²² وقتی شما را صدا می‌‌زنم، گوش دهید. پندهای خوبی می‌دهم و آنچه می‌دانم به شما می‌آموزم.

²³Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

²³ چندین بار شما را صدا کردم ولی نیامدید. دستهای خود را به طرف شما دراز کردم، اعتنا نکردید.

²⁴Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

²⁴ نصایح مرا قبول نکردید و نخواستید که شما را اصلاح کنم.

²⁵But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

²⁵ پس وقتی گرفتار شوید، به شما می‌خندم و هنگامی‌که دچار ترس و وحشت شوید، شما را مسخره می‌کنم.

²⁶I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

²⁶ وقتی ترس مثل توفان به شما حمله کند و مصیبت مانند گردباد دور شما را بگیرد، وقتی‌که به تنگدستی و پریشانی دچار شوید.

²⁷When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

²⁷ آنگاه مرا صدا خواهید کرد، ولی جواب نخواهم داد. همه‌جا به دنبال من خواهید گشت ولی مرا پیدا نخواهید کرد.

²⁸Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

²⁸ زیرا شما هرگز به حکمت توجّه نکردید و از خداوند اطاعت ننمودید.

²⁹For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

²⁹ هرگز با من مشورت نکردید و به نصیحتهای من توجّه ننمودید.

³⁰They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

³⁰ بنابراین، آنچه کاشته‌اید درو خواهید کرد و کارهای شما، شما را گرفتار می‌سازد.

³¹Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

³¹ مردم نادان که حکمت را قبول نمی‌کنند، نابود می‌شوند و بی‌توجّهی ایشان، آنها را هلاک خواهد کرد. امّا کسانی‌که به من گوش دهند در آرامش زندگی خواهند کرد و از هیچ چیزی نخواهند ترسید.»

³²For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

³² امّا کسانی‌که به من گوش دهند در آرامش زندگی خواهند کرد و از هیچ چیزی نخواهند ترسید.»

³³But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
