¹Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:

¹ ای تمامی مردمان، این را بشنوید! هرکس در هرجایی که هست گوش بدهد،

²Both low and high, rich and poor, together.

² کوچک و بزرگ، ثروتمند و فقیر.

³My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

³ افکار من روشن و آشکار است، سخنان من همه از روی حکمت است.

⁴I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

⁴ به مَثَلها توجّه می‌کنم و هنگامی‌که چنگ می‌نوازم معنی آنها را بیان می‌کنم.

⁵Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?

⁵ چرا در هنگام خطر و یا وقتی‌که دشمنان مرا محاصره کرده‌اند، بترسم؟

⁶They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;

⁶ اینها مردمی هستند که به ثروت خود توکّل دارند و به دارایی خویش افتخار می‌کنند!

⁷None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

⁷ هیچ‌کس نمی‌‌تواند تاوان جان خود را بدهد و یا بهای زندگی خود را به خدا بپردازد.

⁸(For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)

⁸ زیرا ارزش زندگی یک انسان بسیار گرانبهاست و هیچ چیز در مقابل آن کفایت نمی‌کند،

⁹That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.

⁹ تا کسی طعم مرگ را نچشد و تا به ابد زندگی کند.

¹⁰For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.

¹⁰ همهٔ ما می‌بینیم که حتّی اشخاص عالِم هم می‌میرند، همچنان‌که احمقان و نادانان می‌میرند. همهٔ آنها ثروت خود را برای بازماندگان خود باقی می‌گذارند.

¹¹Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.

¹¹ درحالی‌که آنها نام خود را بر املاک خود می‌گذارند، گورشان خانهٔ ابدی آنها می‌گردد و برای همیشه در آن ساکن می‌شوند.

¹²Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.

¹² جاه و مقام ما را از مرگ نجات نمی‌دهد، بلکه ما نیز خواهیم مرد همچنان‌که یک حیوان می‌میرد.

¹³This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.

¹³ سرنوشت اشخاصی که به خودشان توکّل دارند چنین است، سرنوشت آنانی که به دارایی خود دلخوش هستند.

¹⁴Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

¹⁴ آنها مانند گوسفندان محکوم به مرگ هستند و چوپان ایشان مرگ است. نیکوکاران بر آنها پیروز می‌گردند و اجساد آنان بزودی دور از خانه‌هایشان در دنیای مردگان خواهد پوسید.

¹⁵But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

¹⁵ امّا خداوند، جان مرا از دنیای مردگان می‌رهاند و نجات می‌دهد.

¹⁶Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;

¹⁶ وقتی کسی دولتمند می‌گردد و به مال و دارایی او افزوده می‌گردد، شما آشفته نگردید،

¹⁷For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.

¹⁷ او در وقت مردن، دارایی خود را با خود به گور نخواهد برد.

¹⁸Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.

¹⁸ اگرچه کسی از زندگی خود راضی باشد و دیگران او را به‌خاطر موفقیّتش بستایند،

¹⁹He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.

¹⁹ امّا سرانجام خواهد مرد و به اجداد خود خواهد پیوست و دیگر روشنی را نخواهد دید. جاه و مقام کسی او را از مرگ نجات نمی‌دهد، بلکه او نیز خواهد مرد، همچنان‌که یک حیوان می‌میرد.

²⁰Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
