¹Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

¹ در زمانهای قدیم، در روزگاری که قوم اسرائیل هنوز پادشاهی نداشت، قحطی سختی در آن سرزمین واقع گشت. به همین دلیل شخصی به نام الیملک، که از خاندان افراته بود و در بیت‌لحم یهودیه زندگی می‌کرد، به اتّفاق همسرش نعومی و دو پسرش محلون و کلیون به سرزمین موآب کوچ کرد تا در آنجا زندگی کنند. در طول اقامتشان در آنجا

²And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

² الیملک مُرد و نعومی به اتّفاق دو پسرش

³And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.

³ که با دختران موآبی به نامهای عرفه و روت ازدواج کرده بودند، تنها ماند. حدود ده سال بعد

⁴And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.

⁴ محلون و کلیون نیز درگذشتند و نعومی بدون شوهر و فرزند ماند.

⁵And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband.

⁵ پس از مدّتی نعومی باخبر شد که خداوند قوم خود را با اعطای محصول خوب، برکت داده است. از این رو تصمیم گرفت به همراه دو عروس خود، موآب را ترک کند.

⁶Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.

⁶ پس آنها با هم به راه افتادند تا به یهودیه بازگردند. امّا در بین راه

⁷Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.

⁷ نعومی به آنها گفت: «به خانهٔ خود، به نزد مادرانتان بازگردید. امیدوارم خداوند در عوض نیکویی که به من و به فرزندانم کردید، با شما به نیکی رفتار کند.

⁸And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.

⁸ و دعای من این است که هر دو نفر شما بتوانید ازدواج کنید و تشکیل خانواده بدهید.» پس نعومی آنها را بوسید و از آنها خداحافظی کرد. امّا آنها گریه‌کنان

⁹The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

⁹ به او گفتند: «نه، ما همراه تو و به میان قوم تو خواهیم آمد.»

¹⁰And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.

¹⁰ نعومی در پاسخ گفت: «دخترانم، شما باید بازگردید. چرا می‌خواهید همراه من باشید؟ آیا فکر می‌کنید که من می‌توانم دوباره صاحب پسرانی شوم که با شما ازدواج کنند؟

¹¹And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

¹¹ به خانهٔ خود بروید، چون من پیرتر از آن هستم که بتوانم دوباره ازدواج کنم. حتّی اگر چنین چیزی امکان می‌داشت و همین امشب ازدواج می‌کردم و صاحب دو پسر می‌شدم،

¹²Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;

¹² آیا شما می‌توانید صبر کنید تا آنها بزرگ شوند؟ آیا این امید، مانع ازدواج شما با دیگران نخواهد شد؟ نه دخترانم، شما می‌دانید که این غیر ممکن است. خداوند با من از در خشم درآمده و از این بابت برای شما بسیار متأسفم.»

¹³Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.

¹³ آنها باز به گریه افتادند. بعد از آن عرفه مادر شوهر خود را بوسید و از او خداحافظی کرد و به خانهٔ خود برگشت. امّا روت به او چسبید.

¹⁴And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.

¹⁴ از این رو نعومی به او گفت: «روت، زن برادر شوهرت به نزد قوم خود و خدایان خود برگشته است. تو نیز همراه او برو.»

¹⁵And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.

¹⁵ امّا روت در جواب گفت: «از من نخواه که تو را ترک کنم. اجازه بده همراه تو بیایم. هر جا بروی، من نیز خواهم آمد و هر جا زندگی کنی، من هم در آنجا زندگی خواهم کرد. قوم تو، قوم من و خدای تو، خدای من خواهد بود.

¹⁶And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

¹⁶ هر جا تو بمیری، من هم خواهم مرد و همان‌جا دفن خواهم شد. خداوند مرا جزا دهد اگر چیزی جز مرگ، مرا از تو جدا سازد.»

¹⁷Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

¹⁷ وقتی نعومی دید روت برای همراهی او مصمّم است، دیگر چیزی نگفت.

¹⁸When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her.

¹⁸ آنها به راه خود ادامه دادند تا به بیت‌لحم رسیدند. وقتی آنان وارد شهر شدند مردم از دیدنشان به هیجان آمدند و زنان با تعجّب می‌گفتند: «آیا این زن، واقعاً همان نعومی (یعنی خوش) است؟»

¹⁹So they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi?

¹⁹ نعومی در پاسخ گفت: «مرا دیگر نعومی نخوانید، مرا مارّه (یعنی تلخی) صدا کنید، چون خدای قادر مطلق زندگی مرا تلخ ساخته است.

²⁰And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.

²⁰ وقتی اینجا را ترک کردم صاحب همه‌چیز بودم، امّا خداوند مرا دست خالی به اینجا بازگردانیده است. چرا مرا نعومی صدا می‌کنید درحالی‌که خداوند مرا محکوم کرده و بر من بلا آورده است؟» به این ترتیب نعومی به همراه روت، عروس موآبی خود، از موآب بازگشت. وقتی آنها به بیت‌لحم رسیدند، فصل برداشت جو به تازگی شروع شده بود.

²¹I went out full and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

²¹ به این ترتیب نعومی به همراه روت، عروس موآبی خود، از موآب بازگشت. وقتی آنها به بیت‌لحم رسیدند، فصل برداشت جو به تازگی شروع شده بود.

²²So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
