¹And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

¹Au trecut multe zile, şi cuvîntul Domnului a vorbit astfel lui Ilie, în al treilea an: ,,Du-te, şi înfăţişează-te înaintea lui Ahab, ca să dau ploaie pe faţa pămîntului.``

²And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.

²Şi Ilie s'a dus să se înfăţişeze înaintea lui Ahab. Era mare foamete în Samaria.

³And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

³Şi Ahab a trimes să cheme pe Obadia, mai marele casei lui. -Obadia se temea mult de Domnul.

⁴For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

⁴De aceea cînd a nimicit Izabela pe proorocii Domnului, Obadia a luat o sută de prooroci, i -a ascuns cîte cincizeci într'o peştere, şi i -a hrănit cu pîne şi cu apă. -

⁵And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

⁵Ahab a zis lui Obadia: ,,Haidem prin ţară pe la toate izvoarele de apă şi pe la toate pîrîurile; poate că vom găsi iarbă ca să păstrăm viaţa cailor şi catîrilor, şi să n'avem nevoie să omorîm vitele.``

⁶So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

⁶Şi-au împărţit ţara s'o cutreere. Ahab a plecat singur pe un drum, şi Obadia a plecat singur pe un alt drum.

⁷And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

⁷Pe cînd era Obadia pe drum, iată că l -a întîlnit Ilie. Obadia, cunoscîndu -l, a căzut cu faţa la pamînt, şi a zis: ,,Tu eşti, domnul meu Ilie?``

⁸And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

⁸El i -a răspuns: ,,Eu sînt; du-te şi spune stăpînului tău: ,Iată că a venit Ilie!``

⁹And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

⁹Şi Obadia a zis: ,,Ce păcat am săvîrşit eu, ca să dai pe robul tău în mînile lui Ahab, ca să mă omoare?

¹⁰As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

¹⁰Viu este Domnul, că n'a rămas popor sau împărăţie unde să nu fi trimes stăpînul meu să te caute; şi cînd se spunea că nu eşti acolo, punea pe împărăţia şi poporul acela să jure că nu te -a găsit.

¹¹And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

¹¹Şi acum zici: ,Du-te, şi spune stăpînului tău: ,Iată că a venit Ilie`!

¹²And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.

¹²Şi apoi, cînd voi pleca de la tine, Duhul Domnului te va duce nu ştiu unde. Dacă m'aş duce să dau de ştire lui Ahab, şi nu te-ar găsi, mă va omorî. Şi totuş robul tău se teme de Domnul din tinereţa lui.

¹³Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

¹³Nu s'a spus oare domnului meu ce am făcut cînd a ucis Izabela pe proorocii Domnului? Cum am ascuns o sută de prooroci ai Domnului, cîte cincizeci într -o peşteră şi i-am hrănit cu pîne şi cu apă?

¹⁴And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.

¹⁴Şi acum tu zici: ,Du-te şi spune stăpînului tău: ,Iată că a venit Ilie`! El mă va ucide.``

¹⁵And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to day.

¹⁵Dar Ilie a zis: ,,Viu este Domnul oştirilor, al cărui slujitor sînt, că astăzi mă voi înfăţişa înaintea lui Ahab.``

¹⁶So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

¹⁶Obadia, ducîndu-se înaintea lui Ahab, l -a înştiinţat despre lucrul acesta. Şi Ahab s'a dus înaintea lui Ilie.

¹⁷And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

¹⁷Abia a zărit Ahab pe Ilie, şi i -a zis: ,,Tu eşti acela care nenoroceşti pe Israel?``

¹⁸And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

¹⁸Ilie a răspuns: ,,Nu eu nenorocesc pe Israel; ci tu, şi casa tatălui tău, fiindcă aţi părăsit poruncile Domnului şi te-ai dus după Baali.

¹⁹Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

¹⁹Strînge acum pe tot Israelul la mine, la muntele Carmel, pe cei patrusute cincizeci de prooroci ai lui Baal, şi pe cei patru sute de prooroci ai Astarteei, cari mănîncă la masa Izabelei``.

²⁰So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

²⁰Ahab a trimes soli la toţi copiii lui Israel, şi a strîns pe prooroci la muntele Carmel.

²¹And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

²¹Atunci Ilie s'a apropiat de tot poporul, şi a zis: ,,Pînă cînd vreţi să şchiopătaţi de amîndouă picioarele? Dacă Domnul este Dumnezeu, mergeţi după El; iar dacă este Baal, mergeţi după Baal!`` Poporul nu i -a răspuns nimic.

²²Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

²²Şi Ilie a zis poporului: ,,Eu singur am rămas din proorocii Domnului, pe cînd prooroci ai lui Baal sînt patru sute cincizeci.

²³Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

²³Să ni se dea doi junci. Ei să-şi aleagă un junc, pe care să -l taie în bucăţi, şi să -l pună pe lemne, fără să pună foc. Şi eu voi pregăti celalt junc, şi -l voi pune pe lemne fără să pun foc.

²⁴And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

²⁴Apoi voi să chemaţi numele dumnezeului vostru; şi eu voi chema Numele Domnului. Dumnezeul care va răspunde prin foc, acela să fie adevăratul Dumnezeu. Şi tot poporul a răspuns, şi a zis: ,,Bine!``

²⁵And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

²⁵Ilie a zis proorocilor lui Baal: ,,Alegeţi-vă un junc din cei doi, pregătiţi -l voi întîi, căci sînteţi mai mulţi, şi chemaţi numele dumnezeului vostru; dar să nu puneţi foc.``

²⁶And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

²⁶Ei au luat juncul pe care li l-au dat, şi l-au pregătit. Şi au chemat numele lui Baal, de dimineaţă pînă la amează, zicînd: ,,Baale, auzi-ne!`` Dar nu s'a auzit nici glas, nici răspuns. Şi săreau împrejurul altarului pe care -l făcuseră.

²⁷And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

²⁷La amează, Ilie şi -a bătut joc de ei, şi a zis: ,,Strigaţi tare, fiindcă este dumnezeu; se gîndeşte la ceva, sau are treabă, sau este în călătorie, sau poate că doarme, şi se va trezi.``

²⁸And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

²⁸Ei au strigat tare, şi, după obiceiul lor, şi-au făcut tăieturi cu săbiile şi cu suliţele, pînă ce a curs sînge pe ei.

²⁹And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

²⁹Cînd a trecut ameaza, au aiurat, pînă în clipa cînd se aducea jertfa de seară. Dar nu s'a auzit nici glas, nici răspuns, nici semn de luare aminte.

³⁰And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

³⁰Ilie a zis atunci întregului popor: ,,Apropiaţi-vă de mine``! Tot poporul s'a apropiat de el. Şi Ilie a dres altarul Domnului care fusese sfărîmat.

³¹And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:

³¹A luat douăsprezece pietre, după numărul seminţiilor fiilor lui Iacov, căruia Domnul îi zisese: ,,Israel îţi va fi numele``,

³²And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

³²şi a zidit cu pietrele acestea un altar în Numele Domnului. A făcut împrejurul altarului un şanţ, în care încăpeau două măsuri de sămînţă.

³³And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

³³A aşezat apoi lemnele, a tăiat juncul în bucăţi, şi l -a puse pe lemne. Apoi a zis: ,,Umpleţi patru vedre cu apă, şi vărsaţi-le pe arderea de tot şi pe lemne.`` Şi au făcut aşa.

³⁴And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

³⁴Apoi a zis: ,,Mai faceţi lucrul acesta odată.`` Şi l-au făcut încă odată. Apoi a zis: ,,Mai faceţi -l şi a treia oară.`` Şi l-au făcut şi a treia oară.

³⁵And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

³⁵Apa curgea în jurul altarului, şi au umplut cu apă şi şanţul.

³⁶And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

³⁶În clipa cînd se aducea jertfa de seară, proorocul Ilie s'a apropiat şi a zis: ,,Doamne, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Isaac şi Israel! Fă să se ştie astăzi că Tu eşti Dumnezeu în Israel, că eu sînt slujitorul Tău, şi că toate aceste lucruri le-am făcut după porunca Ta.

³⁷Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

³⁷Ascultă-mă, Doamne, ascultă-mă, pentruca să cunoască poporul acesta că Tu, Doamne, eşti adevăratul Dumnezeu, şi să le întorci astfel inima spre bine!``

³⁸Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

³⁸Atunci a căzut foc dela Domnul, şi a mistuit arderea de tot, lemnele, pietrele şi pămîntul, şi a supt şi apa care era în şanţ.

³⁹And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

³⁹Cînd a văzut tot poporul lucrul acesta, au căzut cu faţa la pămînt, şi au zis: ,,Domnul este adevăratul Dumnezeu! Domnul este adevăratul Dumnezeu!``

⁴⁰And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

⁴⁰,,Puneţi mîna pe proorocii lui Baal``, le -a zis Ilie: ,,niciunul să nu scape!`` Şi au pus mîna pe ei. Ilie i -a pogorît la pîrîul Chison şi i -a junghiat acolo.

⁴¹And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

⁴¹Apoi Ilie a zis lui Ahab: ,,Suie-te de mănîncă şi bea; căci se aude vuiet de ploaie.``

⁴²So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

⁴²Ahab s'a suit să mănînce şi să bea. Dar Ilie s'a suit pe vîrful Carmelului, şi plecîndu-se la pămînt, s'a aşezat cu faţa între genunchi,

⁴³And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

⁴³şi a zis slujitorului său: ,,Suie-te şi uită-te înspre mare.`` Slujitorul s'a suit, s'a uitat, şi a zis: ,,Nu este nimic!`` Ilie a zis de şapte ori: ,,Du-te iarăş.``

⁴⁴And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not.

⁴⁴A şaptea oară, slujitorul a zis: ,,Iată că se ridică un mic nor din mare, ca o palmă de om.`` Ilie a zis: ,,Suie-te, şi spune lui Ahab: ,Înhamă, şi pogoară-te, ca să nu te oprească ploaia.``

⁴⁵And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

⁴⁵Peste cîteva clipe, cerul s'a înegrit de nori, a început vîntul, şi a venit o ploaie mare. Ahab s'a suit în car, şi a plecat la Izreel.

⁴⁶And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

⁴⁶Şi mîna Domnului a venit peste Ilie, care şi -a încins mijlocul, şi a alergat înaintea lui Ahab pînă la intrarea în Izreel.
