¹So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

¹M'am uitat apoi la toate asupririle cari se fac supt soare; şi iată că cei apăsaţi varsă lacrămi, şi nu este nimeni să -i mîngîie! Ei sînt pradă sîlniciei asupritorilor lor, şi n'are cine să -i mîngîie!

²Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.

²Şi am găsit că morţii, cari au murit mai înainte, sînt mai fericiţi decît cei vii, cari sînt încă în viaţă.

³Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

³Dar mai fericit decît amîndoi am găsit pe celce nu s'a născut încă, fiindcă n'a văzut toate relele cari se petrec supt soare.

⁴Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

⁴Am mai văzut că orice muncă şi orice iscusinţă la lucru îşi are temeiul numai în pizma unuia asupra altuia. Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune şi goană după vînt.

⁵The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

⁵Nebunul îşi încrucişează mînile, şi îşi mănîncă însăş carnea lui.

⁶Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

⁶Mai bine o mînă plină de odihnă, decît amîndoi pumnii plini de trudă şi goană după vînt.

⁷Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.

⁷Am mai văzut o altă deşertăciune supt soare.

⁸There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

⁸Un om este singur singurel, n'are nici fiu, nici frate, şi totuş munca lui n'are sfîrşit, ochii nu i se satură niciodată de bogăţii, şi nu se gîndeşte: ,,Pentru cine muncesc eu, şi-mi lipsesc sufletul de plăceri?`` Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune şi un lucru rău.

⁹Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

⁹Mai bine doi decît unul, căci iau o plată cu atît mai bună pentru munca lor.

¹⁰For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

¹⁰Căci, dacă se întîmplă să cadă, se ridică unul pe altul; dar vai de cine este singur, şi cade, fără să aibă pe altul care să -l ridice!

¹¹Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

¹¹Tot aşa, dacă se culcă doi împreună, se încălzesc unul pe altul, dar cum are să se încălzescă dacă e singur?

¹²And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

¹²Şi dacă se scoală cineva asupra unuia, doi pot să -i stea împotrivă; şi funia împletită în trei nu se rupe uşor.

¹³Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

¹³Mai bine un copil sărac şi înţelept decît un împărat bătrîn şi fără minte, care nu înţelege că trebuie să se lase îndrumat;

¹⁴For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.

¹⁴căci el poate să iasă din temniţă ca să domnească, măcarcă poate chiar să se fi născut sărac în împărăţia celui din urmă.

¹⁵I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.

¹⁵Am văzut pe toţi cei vii, cari umblă supt soare, înconjurînd pe copilul, care avea să urmeze după împărat şi să domnească în locul lui.

¹⁶There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

¹⁶Fără sfîrşit era tot poporul, în fruntea căruia mergea el. Şi totuş, ceice vor veni după el nu se vor bucura de el. Căci şi aceasta este o deşertăciune şi goană după vînt.
