¹Now it came to pass when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)

¹Nu pusesem încă uşile porţilor cînd Sanbalat, Tobia, Gheşem, Arabul, şi ceilalţi vrăjmaşi ai noştri au auzit că zidisem zidul şi că n'a mai rămas nicio spărtură.

²That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.

²Atunci Sanbalat şi Gheşem au trimes să-mi spună: ,,Vino, şi să ne întîlnim în satele din valea Ono. Îşi puseseră de gînd să-mi facă rău.

³And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?

³Le-am trimes soli cu următorul răspuns: ,,Am o mare lucrare de făcut, şi nu pot să mă pogor; cît timp l-aş lăsa ca să vin la voi, lucrul ar înceta.``

⁴Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.

⁴Mi-au făcut în patru rînduri aceeaş cerere, şi le-am dat acelaş răspuns.

⁵Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand;

⁵Sanbalat mi -a trimes solia aceasta a cincea oară prin slujitorul său, care ţinea în mînă o scrisoare deschisă.

⁶Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu saith it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words.

⁶În ea era scris: ,,Se răspîndeşte zvonul printre popoare, şi Gaşmu spune că tu şi Iudeii aveţi de gînd să vă răsculaţi, şi că în acest scop zideşti zidul. Se zice că tu vei ajunge împăratul lor,

⁷And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.

⁷şi că ai pus chiar prooroci, ca să te numească la Ierusalim împărat al lui Iuda. Şi acum lucrurile acestea vor ajunge la cunoştinţa împăratului. Vino dar, şi să ne sfătuim împreună.``

⁸Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.

⁸Am trimes următorul răspuns lui Sanbalat: ,,Ce ai spus tu în scrisoare nu este; tu dela tine le născoceşti!``

⁹For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands.

⁹Toţi oamenii aceştia voiau să ne înfricoşeze, şi îşi ziceau: ,,Li se va muia inima, şi lucrarea nu se va face.`` Acum, Dumnezeule, întăreşte-mă!

¹⁰Afterward I came unto the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night will they come to slay thee.

¹⁰M'am dus la Şemaia, fiul lui Delaia, fiul lui Mehetabeel. El se închisese, şi a zis: ,,Haidem împreună în Casa lui Dumnezeu, în mijlocul Templului, şi să închidem uşile Templului: căci vin să te omoare, şi au să vină noaptea să te omoare.``

¹¹And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.

¹¹Eu am răspuns: ,,Un om ca mine să fugă? Şi care om ca mine ar putea să intre în Templu şi să trăiască? Nu voi intra!``

¹²And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

¹²Şi am cunoscut că nu Dumnezeu îl trimetea. Ci a proorocit aşa pentru mine, fiindcă Sanbalat şi Tobia îi dăduseră argint.

¹³Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

¹³Şi cîştigîndu -l astfel, nădăjduiau că am să mă tem, şi că am să urmez sfaturile lui şi să fac un păcat. Ei s'ar fi folosit de această atingere a bunului meu nume, ca să mă umple de ocară.

¹⁴My God, think thou upon Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.

¹⁴Adu-Ţi aminte, Dumnezeule, de Tobia şi de Sanbalat, şi de faptele lor! Adu-Ţi aminte şi de Noadia, proorociţa, şi de ceilalţi prooroci cari căutau să mă sperie!

¹⁵So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days.

¹⁵Zidul a fost isprăvit în a douăzeci şi cincea zi a lunii Elul, în cincizeci şi două de zile.

¹⁶And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.

¹⁶Cînd au auzit toţi vrăjmaşii noştri, s'au temut toate popoarele dimprejurul nostru; s'au smerit foarte mult, şi au cunoscut că lucrarea se făcuse prin voia Dumnezeului nostru.

¹⁷Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.

¹⁷În vremea aceea erau unii fruntaşi din Iudeia, cari trimeteau deseori scrisori lui Tobia şi primeau şi ei scrisori dela el.

¹⁸For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.

¹⁸Căci mulţi din Iuda erau legaţi cu el prin jurămînt, pentrucă era ginerile lui Şecania, fiul lui Arah, şi fiul său Iohanan luase pe fata lui Meşulam, fiul lui Berechia.

¹⁹Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.

¹⁹Vorbeau bine de el chiar în faţa mea, şi -i spuneau cuvintele mele. Tobia trimetea scrisori ca să mă înfricoşeze.
