1Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
1Poglejte, koliko ljubezen nam je dal Oče, da se imenujemo otroci Božji, in smo tudi. Zato nas svet ne spoznava, ker njega ni spoznal.
2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
2Ljubljeni, sedaj smo otroci Božji, a ni se še pokazalo, kaj bodemo. Vemo pa, da bodemo, ko se prikaže, njemu podobni, ker ga bomo videli, kakor je.
3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
3In vsak, kdor ima to upanje vanj, očiščuje sebe, kakor je on čist.
4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
4Vsak, kdor dela greh, dela tudi protizakonje; in greh je protizakonje.
5And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
5In veste, da se je on prikazal, da odvzame grehe naše; in greha ni v njem.
6Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
6Kdorkoli ostaja v njem, ne greši; kdorkoli greši, ga ni videl in ga ni spoznal.
7Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
7Otročiči, nihče naj vas ne slepi: kdor dela pravičnost, je pravičen, kakor je on pravičen;
8He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
8kdor dela greh, je iz hudiča, ker hudič greši od začetka. Zato se je prikazal Sin Božji, da razdene dela hudičeva.
9Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
9Kdorkoli je rojen iz Boga, ne dela greha, ker seme njegovo ostaja v njem, in grešiti ne more, ker je rojen iz Boga.
10In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
10V tem so očitni otroci Božji in otroci hudičevi: kdorkoli ne dela pravičnosti, ni iz Boga, in kdor ne ljubi brata svojega.
11For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
11Kajti to je oznanilo, ki ste ga slišali od začetka: naj se ljubimo med seboj;
12Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
12ne kakor Kajn, ki je bil iz Hudobnega in je ubil brata svojega. In zakaj ga je ubil? Ker so bila hudobna dela njegova, dela brata njegovega pa pravična.
13Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
13Ne čudite se, bratje moji, če vas svet sovraži.
14We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
14Mi vemo, da smo prešli iz smrti v življenje, ker ljubimo brate. Kdor ne ljubi, ostaja v smrti.
15Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
15Vsak, kdor sovraži brata svojega, je ljudomorec; in veste, da noben ljudomorec nima večnega življenja, ki bi prebivalo v njem.
16Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
16V tem smo spoznali ljubezen, da je on dal življenje za nas; tudi mi moramo dati življenje za brate.
17But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
17Kdor pa ima premoženje tega sveta in vidi brata svojega, da je v potrebi, a zapre srce svoje pred njim, kako prebiva ljubezen Božja v njem?
18My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
18Otročiči moji, ne ljubimo z besedo, tudi ne z jezikom, marveč v dejanju in resnici.
19And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
19In v tem spoznamo, da smo iz resnice, in pred njim bomo pomirili srca svoja,
20For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
20da, ako nas srce naše obsoja, je Bog večji od srca našega in pozna vse.
21Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
21Ljubljeni, če nas srce naše ne obsoja, imamo trdno zaupanje do Boga,
22And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
22in karkoli prosimo, prejmemo od njega, ker držimo zapovedi njegove in delamo, kar je prijetno pred njim.
23And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
23In ta je zapoved njegova, da verujmo v ime Sina njegovega, Jezusa Kristusa, in se ljubimo med seboj, kakor nam je dal zapoved.In kdor drži zapovedi njegove, ostaja v Njem in On v njem. In v tem spoznavamo, da ostaja v nas, iz Duha namreč, ki ga nam je dal.
24And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
24In kdor drži zapovedi njegove, ostaja v Njem in On v njem. In v tem spoznavamo, da ostaja v nas, iz Duha namreč, ki ga nam je dal.
