¹And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

¹In po mnogih dneh pride beseda GOSPODOVA k Eliju, v tretjem letu, in veli: Pojdi, pokaži se Ahabu, da dam dežja na zemljo.

²And Elijah went to show himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.

²Šel je torej Elija, da se pokaže Ahabu. Bila je pa velika lakota v Samariji.

³And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

³In Ahab pokliče Obadija, ki je bil oskrbnik dvorca (Obadija se je pa silno bal GOSPODA;

⁴For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

⁴in zgodilo se je, ko je Jezabela morila proroke GOSPODOVE, da je Obadija vzel sto prorokov in jih je skril v jami, tu petdeset in tam petdeset, ter jih je oskrboval s kruhom in z vodo).

⁵And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

⁵In Ahab veli Obadiju: Pojdi po deželi do vseh studencev in do vseh potokov, če morda kje najdemo trave in ohranimo konje in mezge, da ne izgubimo vse živine.

⁶So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

⁶Razdelita si torej deželo, da jo prehodita; Ahab gre po eni poti sam in po drugem potu Obadija sam.

⁷And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

⁷In ko je Obadija na poti, glej, pride mu Elija naproti; in ga spozna ter pade na obraz in reče: Si li ti, gospod moj Elija?

⁸And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

⁸On odgovori: Jaz sem. Pojdi, povej svojemu gospodu: Glej, Elija je tu.

⁹And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

⁹On pa reče: Kaj sem pregrešil, da hočeš dati mene, hlapca svojega, Ahabu v roko, da me umori?

¹⁰As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

¹⁰Kakor resnično živi GOSPOD, Bog tvoj, ni ga naroda ali kraljestva, kamor ni poslal moj GOSPOD te iskat; in ko so rekli: Ni ga tukaj, je zahteval prisego od tistega kraljestva in naroda, da te niso našli.

¹¹And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

¹¹In sedaj mi veliš: Pojdi, povej gospodu svojemu: Glej, Elija je tu!

¹²And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.

¹²Lahko se zgodi, ko odidem od tebe, da te duh GOSPODOV odnese ne vem kam; in ko pridem in povem Ahabu zate, on pa te ne najde, tedaj me umori. In hlapec tvoj se boji GOSPODA od mladosti svoje.

¹³Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

¹³Niso li tebi, gospodu mojemu, povedali, kaj sem storil, ko je Jezabela morila proroke GOSPODOVE? Da sem jih skril sto izmed prorokov GOSPODOVIH v jami, tu petdeset, tam petdeset, in sem jih oskrboval s kruhom in z vodo?

¹⁴And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.

¹⁴In sedaj mi veliš: Pojdi, povej gospodu svojemu: Glej, Elija je tu! In me umori.

¹⁵And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself unto him to day.

¹⁵In Elija reče: Kakor res živi GOSPOD nad vojskami, ki stojim pred njega obličjem, gotovo se mu pokažem danes!

¹⁶So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

¹⁶Tedaj gre Obadija naproti Ahabu in mu to naznani. Ahab pa krene Eliju naproti.

¹⁷And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

¹⁷In ko Ahab ugleda Elija, mu reče: Si li tu ti, ki spravljaš v nesrečo Izraela?

¹⁸And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

¹⁸On odgovori: Nisem jaz spravil v nesrečo Izraela, temuč ti in tvojega očeta hiša s tem, da ste zapustili zapovedi GOSPODOVE in si ti hodil za Baali.

¹⁹Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

¹⁹Sedaj torej pošlji in zberi k meni vsega Izraela pri gori Karmelu in prorokov Baalovih štiristo in petdeset, tudi štiristo prorokov Ašerinih, ki jedo z mize Jezabeline.

²⁰So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

²⁰Ahab torej pošlje do vseh sinov Izraelovih in zbere proroke pri gori Karmelu.

²¹And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

²¹In Elija stopi pred vse ljudstvo in reče: Kako dolgo omahujete na dve strani? Je li GOSPOD Bog, hodite za njim, če pa je Baal, hodite za njim! In ljudstvo mu ne odgovori besede.

²²Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

²²Tedaj reče Elija ljudstvu: Jaz, jaz sam sem ostal prorok GOSPODOV, a prorokov Baalovih je štiristo in petdeset mož.

²³Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

²³Dajte nam torej dva junca, in oni naj si izbero junca zase in ga razsekajo in polože na drva, ognja pa naj ne zanetijo; in jaz pripravim drugega junca ter ga položim na drva, ognja pa ne zanetim.

²⁴And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

²⁴In kličite ime svojega boga, jaz pa bom klical ime GOSPODOVO: in Bog, ki odgovori z ognjem, ta bodi Bog. In vse ljudstvo odgovori in reče: Prav si govoril.

²⁵And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

²⁵Nato reče Elija prorokom Baalovim: Izberite si enega junca in ga pripravite najprej, zakaj vas je veliko; in kličite ime svojega boga, ognja pa ne zanetite!

²⁶And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

²⁶In vzamejo junca, ki jim je bil dan, in ga pripravijo, pa kličejo ime Baalovo od jutra do poldne, govoreč: O Baal, usliši nas! A ni bilo glasu, ne odgovora. In skačejo okoli oltarja, ki so ga naredili.

²⁷And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

²⁷In ko je bilo že poldne, jih zasmehuje Elija in veli: Vpijte prav glasno, saj je vendar bog! nemara da je zatopljen v misli, ali je šel na stran, ali je na potovanju; morda spi in se prebudi!

²⁸And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

²⁸In vpijejo glasno in se po svoji šegi bodejo z nožmi in sulicami, da je kri po njih tekla.

²⁹And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

²⁹In ko je minil poldan, še prorokujejo, dokler ne pride čas, da se prinese večerna daritev, a ni bilo glasu, ne odgovora, ne nikogar, ki bi poslušal.

³⁰And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

³⁰Tedaj veli Elija vsemu ljudstvu: Pristopite k meni! In ko pristopi ljudstvo k njemu, popravi oltar GOSPODOV, ki je bil razdrt.

³¹And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:

³¹In Elija vzame dvanajst kamenov, po številu rodov sinov Jakoba, ki se mu je zgodila beseda GOSPODOVA, rekoč: Izrael bodi ime tvoje.

³²And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

³²In iz teh kamenov zgradi oltar v imenu GOSPODOVEM; in okoli oltarja naredi jarek, širok in globok za dvojno žitno merico.

³³And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

³³In pripravi drva ter razseka junca in ga položi na drva. Pa veli: Napolnite štiri vrče z vodo in jo izlijte na žgalno žrtev in na drva.

³⁴And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

³⁴In veli: Še v drugič storite to! In ko storé v drugič, veli: Storite še v tretjič! In store v tretje.

³⁵And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

³⁵In voda je tekla okoli oltarja; pa tudi jarek je napolnil z vodo.

³⁶And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

³⁶In ko pride čas, da se daruje večerna daritev, pristopi prorok Elija in reče: GOSPOD, Bog Abrahamov, Izakov in Izraelov, daj danes spoznati, da si ti Bog v Izraelu in da sem jaz hlapec tvoj in da sem storil vse to po besedi tvoji!

³⁷Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

³⁷Odgovóri mi, o GOSPOD, odgovori mi! da spozna to ljudstvo, da si ti, o GOSPOD, Bog in si ti sam preobrnil njih srce.

³⁸Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

³⁸Tedaj švigne doli ogenj GOSPODOV in požre žgalno daritev in drva in kamene in prst in poliže vodo, ki je bila v jarku.

³⁹And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

³⁹In ko vse ljudstvo vidi to, popadajo na obraze in govore: GOSPOD je Bog! GOSPOD je Bog!

⁴⁰And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

⁴⁰Elija pa jim veli: Primite proroke Baalove, da njih nobeden ne ubeži! In so jih prijeli. In Elija jih popelje doli k potoku Kisonu in jih ondi pomori.

⁴¹And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

⁴¹In Elija veli Ahabu: Pojdi gori, jej in pij, kajti šumi, kakor da se bliža silen dež.

⁴²So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

⁴²Ahab torej gre gori jest in pit. A Elija stopi na vrh Karmela in, pripognjen proti zemlji, skloni obraz svoj med kolena svoja.

⁴³And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

⁴³In reče hlapcu svojemu: Pojdi gori in poglej proti morju! In gre gori in pogleda, pa reče: Ničesar ni. In mu veli: Pojdi spet tja, sedemkrat!

⁴⁴And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not.

⁴⁴In ob sedmem potu reče: Glej, oblaček vstaja iz morja, majhen kakor moška roka. Pa veli: Pojdi in reci Ahabu: Zaprezi in pelji se doli, da te dež ne zadrži!

⁴⁵And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

⁴⁵In medtem malo po malo zatemni nebo z oblaki in vetrom, in nastane velik dež. In Ahab sede na voz in se pelje v Jezreel.Roka GOSPODOVA pa je bila nad Elijem, in opasal si je ledje in tekel pred Ahabom do vhoda v Jezreel.

⁴⁶And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
