¹There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

¹Živel je mož v deželi Uzovi, ime mu je bilo Job, in ta mož je bil popoln in pošten, ki se je bal Boga in se varoval hudega.

²And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

²In rodilo se mu je sedem sinov in troje hčer.

³His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

³In imel je živine sedem tisoč ovac, tri tisoč velblodov, petsto jarmov volov in petsto oslic in zelo veliko družino. In ta mož je bil imenitnejši od vseh, ki so bivali na Jutrovem.

⁴And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

⁴In sinovi njegovi so hodili in prirejali gostije, vsak v hiši svoji na svoj dan, in so poslali in povabili tri sestre svoje, da bi jedle in pile ž njimi.

⁵And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

⁵In bilo je, ko so minili zaporedoma dnevi njih gostovanja, da je Job poslal ponje in jih posvečeval: vstal je zgodaj zjutraj in daroval žgalne daritve po njih vseh številu; zakaj Job je rekal: Morebiti so se pregrešili sinovi moji in se odrekli [Ali: preklinjali.] Boga v srcu svojem. Tako je delal Job vsekdar.

⁶Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

⁶In zgodi se nekega dne, da pridejo sinovi Božji postavit se pred GOSPODA, pa pride tudi satan [T. j. nasprotnik.] med njimi.

⁷And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

⁷GOSPOD pa reče satanu: Odkod si prišel? Satan odgovori GOSPODU in reče: Po zemlji sem letal semtertja in vseokrog jo obhajal.

⁸And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

⁸In GOSPOD reče satanu: Si li opazoval hlapca mojega Joba? Kajti njemu ni na zemlji enakega, mož je popoln in pošten, ki se boji Boga in varuje hudega.

⁹Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

⁹Tedaj odgovori satan GOSPODU in reče: Mar je brez plačila, da se Job boji Boga?

¹⁰Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

¹⁰Nisi li kroginkrog varno ogradil njega in hiše njegove in karkoli ima? Delo njegovih rok si blagoslovil in imetje njegovo se je razraslo po deželi!

¹¹But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

¹¹Pa le iztegni roko svojo in se dotakni vsega, kar ima, gotovo se ti v obraz tebe odreče!

¹²And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

¹²In GOSPOD veli satanu: Glej, vse, kar ima, v tvoji je roki, samo nanj ne sezi s svojo roko! In ven je šel satan izpred obličja GOSPODOVEGA.

¹³And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

¹³In zgodi se nekega dne, ko so jedli in pili vino sinovi njegovi in hčere njegove v prvorojenega brata hiši,

¹⁴And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them:

¹⁴da pride sel k Jobu in mu reče: Voli so orali in oslice so se pasle poleg njih;

¹⁵And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁵v tem so pridrli Sabejci in jih odgnali, hlapce pa pobili z ostrino meča, in zbežal sem sam edini, da ti to sporočim.

¹⁶While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁶Ta je še govoril, ko pride drugi in reče: Ogenj Božji je šinil z neba in zapalil ovce in hlapce ter jih požgal, in zbežal sem sam edini, da ti sporočim.

¹⁷While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁷Ta je še govoril, ko pride drugi in reče: Kaldejci so naredili tri čete ter naskočili velblode in so jih vzeli ter pobili hlapce z ostrino meča, in zbežal sem sam edini, da ti sporočim.

¹⁸While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house:

¹⁸Ta je še govoril, ko pride drugi ter reče: Sinovi tvoji in hčere tvoje so jedli in vino pili v prvorojenega brata svojega hiši,

¹⁹And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁹in glej, pritisne močan veter od puščave sem in butne ob štiri vogle hiše, da se je zrušila na mladino, in mrtvi so; in zbežal sem sam edini, da ti sporočim.

²⁰Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,

²⁰Tedaj vstane Job in raztrga svoj plašč in si obrije glavo ter pade na zemljo in moli

²¹And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

²¹in reče: Gol sem prišel iz telesa matere svoje in gol se povrnem tja; GOSPOD je dal, GOSPOD je vzel, GOSPODOVO ime bodi hvaljeno!Pri vsem tem ni grešil Job in ni očital Bogu nič napačnega.

²²In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
